Supposed to tee off at 7:20 but got out 5 minutes earlier. Pace was really good, just waited on the par 3 but other than that we were about a hole behind the group in front of us and the group behind us wasn't even on the tee box by the time we walked off 18. Total was 4:15.

Really liked the greens. They rolled very well and while there was evidence of ball marks the greens still were very good. Never saw a ball get offline and the speed were deceptively faster than they looked.

Fairways were good generally. If you hit them you would generally have a good lie. I think there is more roll out there too. I seemed to be hitting them a little longer than I usually do. Don't remember any really bad areas but the summer and heat do seem to have effected parts of the course.

Rough is where it has been taken the most. I had a couple of hard pan lies. Generally good but just beware if you get off the beaten path.

Sand was pretty firm but it was still fine to hit from. It's just not fluffy white sand if that is what you are looking for.

Marshal and cart girl were out plenty of times.

First off at twilight, done at 7:20, only waiting occasionally. Course was in very good shape.
Tees: level, wide and well covered
Fairways: nice to play from with some roll out on tee balls
Rough: thick and nasty, open the face a bit, hold on tight with that upper hand and let it rip, I would have rated the rough a bit higher but it was a little inconsistent
Bunkers: mostly a thin layer of sand with a firm wet base, typical at most SoCal courses these days, maybe a bit better than most
Greens: very good, rolling nice, a couple a bit bumpy late but that's to be expected
Customer service: saw a cart a couple times a nine, everyone else professional and friendly.
Overall: can't wrong with either Torrey course right now worth the price of admission

The name speaks for itself at this PGA Tour venue, as this round was nothing short of spectacular. I will not be discussing the specifics of this course, because as aforementioned, we all know this course is incredible. I will, however, attempt to paint the experience of our group's round.

Our foursome walked the round to enjoy what is regarded as one of the top coastal courses in the world. It's not very often we play the same track as the greatest golfers in the world, but today was different.

We teed off westward down the first fairway into a heavy marine layer, which dissipated at the turn. Dew coated the grass, as you could expect for the those early morning conditions, but this meant slower (friendlier) greens than anticipated allowing for more aggressive approaches and putts. Walking down the first fairway, you could almost feel the resonance of the tour in the air. So many of the greats had opened their Sundays right where we walked. The ocean breeze was steady but calm, yet never ceasing to affect a shot. Once we hit the turn, the sun ripped through the clouds and dried out the course. This upped the pace on the greens a fraction but gave more roll down the beautiful, tree-lined, striped fairways. As a group, we hit many shots that even the big guys would've been proud of. One of our four birdied the famed 3rd hole, par 3 by sticking a 5-iron to 6 feet from 217. Another chipped in to circle a 2 on the par 3 11th. I stuck a deep bunker shot from the 2nd left greenside bunker on the 16th to 4 feet to scramble for par. Many of these shots are made everyday, but there is something special about executing shots and playing at a higher lever at the world's finest.

The course is in incredible shape and provides an experience any golfer will enjoy.

Had a 6:20 time this morning and by the 2nd hole we let the 3 some behind us go thru and the 2some behind them go on 3. After that there was no one behind me us and we finished at 4 1/2 hours. Real weird there weren't that many people out as there were 3somes open holes etc.

I'll echo the last couple of reviews. Overall the conditions are really great right now. Greens roll pretty smooth and quick too. Had a couple of putts and chips get away from me. Had some trouble icky pin positions.

Fairways are nice too but could use a little trim. I hit some drives longer than normal so I think they are rolling out well.

Rough provides enough of a difference to matter. It's certainly not the thickest I've seen but I did lose a ball which even in the area I was looking didn't seem that deep but with this grass balls can just settle in.

Greenside bunkers were a little disappointing. Caught a couple bad breaks and had some lies with not a lot of sand underneath. Fairway bunkers I had better luck with more sand and actually playable. My partners had better luck in the greenside bunkers so I think it was just luck.

Conditions are really nice right now so if you have been on the fence I think. Ow might be a good time to play it. Certainly worthy for the residents.

Some very subtle breaks where it really helped having a caddie! The views are spectacular! Seems a bit pricey but it is an experience every golfer should have at least once!

This is now my favorite course, best in show. The history (for me personally and in the larger context of golf in general), the views, the layout, the challenge, the usually good conditions, the fact that mostly competent players play there, the fact that it's 15 minutes from the house and that it's a beast of a course . . . a "big boy" or "big girl" course.
Tees: level and wide
Fairways: great to hit from with a bit of roll out
Rough: sticky, gnarly, penalizing and beautiful
Bunkers: firm base with a bit of fluff on top, what seems to be the norm everywhere now
Greens: still a bit slow and bumpy from the last punching, but just a wee bit
POP: today was great, our 3:10 group was sent out at 2:50 we never really waited and never got pushed, we finished around 7
Customer service: top notch, they appreciate your business and don't care if you are a local (like me) and pay $47 for twilight or an out of towner who paid a couple hundred
Highly recommended

Played Torrey South on 05/16/17 with an afternoon tee time of 3:00. The wind was definitely a factor with a constant 10-15 mph ocean breeze in sunny but cool conditions. We played the back tees which were all lush and level. The fairways had good coverage and the rough was thick and sticky, especially since it had rained just a little bit the night before. Pin placements were unbelievably tough with most being tucked behind bunkers and tight to the edge of the green. The greens were in great condition and putts would hold their line nicely. The one gripe I have is the sand traps are super inconsistent and need some work. Fairway bunkers had a lot of soft sand while the greenside bunkers had very little sand coverage making it hard to splash out onto the green. I can generally get out of bunkers with ease and on two occasions I went bunker to bunker because of a lack of sand. This layout of the course is not tricky, but hitting fairways and greens is more important here than any other course I have ever played. The rough is a true penalty and every green is strategically bunkered. Keep it in the fairway and on the greens and you can play pretty well here. Can't wait for my next round on this beast of a course!

Played in another men's club tournament today and generally conditions are similar to my review last week BUT you can tell they are preparing for the maintenance in a couple of days. Actually the fairways on holes 12-18 have already been punched.

Greens are still great. I thought I putted pretty well except I kept leaving myself with these tricky 2-3 footers. They got some speed on them so putts did roll good. Some ball marks there but they were very smooth to putt on.

Bunkers are great too. I was able hit some nice bunker shots without the fear of bottoming out.

Tees are generally good. I did notice some dryness and divot damage on the par 3s. Actually on the first tee box I almost broke my tee the ground was so hard.

I'd say wait until after the maintenance to come back so give it a few weeks if you are thinking of playing here.

Played in the men's club shotgun tournament today starting at 7. We finished at about 4:45. Saw the marshal quite a bit but really didn't see anyone slowing it down. Those greens man are fast. With the amount of play this place gets I never expect these greens to be perfect so these are probably the best I can ask for. They do get bumpy because of the traffic too but I only noticed a couple of unrepaired ball marks out there. I was surprised with the fairways. While they are generally pretty good there were quite a bit of unfilled divots. I also found some pretty firm lies. Enough that when I tired to hit my chip my club pretty much bounced off. Kind of surprising give it hasn't been that hot and the rain we have had. Also there has been some good marina layer coverage which I would have thought would keep some moisture on the course. Rough is definitely playable. I don't really remember any bad lies and one guy in our group hit a 3 wood out it just fine. Sand is good and believe me I know, I was in them 8 times. It's not white and fluffy like you see on tv but I like it. It's heavier to me but there is good coverage and depth. Tee boxes are really nice. I didn't notice any with significant damage including the par 3s. One disappointment was there were no balls in the machine this morning and by the time they got there I had to go. My understanding is this is not run by the city but rather independently owned and operated. I didn't knock down any ratings for this.
