Concerning both South and North courses. I play here a lot because it's cheap for locals. This review is for the tourist because the locals already know what's up here now. 2 years ago we changed greens keepers. Both courses started slipping condition wise. The greens keeper claims he is removing the rye grass and trying to speed up and firm up both courses. The result has been dead grass and big bare dirt spots everywhere. He made this claim to me over a year ago and the conditions are still there. Greens are hit and miss daily. Some days they are great and some days they are lousy. I have 3 PGA tour pros for clients. All 3 said last years Farmers open was as bad as they've seen these courses. Although the place was drenched with water to cover up the bare areas before the tournament, the ball sank to the bottom in the rough and was unplayable (but looked good). If you are a tourist you will pay $239.00 to walk the south and $180.00 to walk the North. This is an honest review. This is how the courses are now and will probably be for at least 2 more years. This is my 32nd year playing here at my home course. Personally, I'm completely bummed but it is what it is and it should be known before a person travels here specifically to play these courses.

Played this morning and teed off a little ahead of time. Overall pace was about 4:15, group in front of us was a tad behind but not much.

First these were by far the toughest pin locations ever since I played here. I can only think of no more than 5 holes that were not in the toughest part of the green. Greens rolled pretty good. I don’t think they were overall fast but not slow either. Pretty smooth too. There is a lighter color grass coming thru on some of the greens if that matters to you. Didn’t seem to affect anything in my opinion.

Fairways were nice and great to hit from. Got some decent roll out there. A few divots out there,some filled in and other were not. They are doing some work on 15 on the left side of the fairway. Looks like they just finished resodding it and it will probably be roped off. But it’s really minor.

Rough is not overly penalizing but can be a problem if your ball settles in and you need to hit a longer iron. Also they seemed there was some areas around a couple of greens and tee boxes that were punched. A little odd.

I don’t know if anyone has heard about the sand shortage in San Diego but I guess we have one. Bottom out a couple of times out there.

The south will certainly test your golf skills.....and your sanity.

Played yesterday since the North fairways had been punched (greens scheduled for tomorrow and Wednesday). Pace was 4:15 so it was pretty good for this side. Some waiting to start but then things picked up and we were never really waited too long to hit.

I thought the practice green shows more visible signs of the punching from a couple of weeks ago than the actual greens but I still think the greens could use a little more time to completely heal. Still some signs there and while they don't look uniformly green they actually did roll pretty fast.

Tee boxes were so so. You could still tell there was sand there as the grass has not completely grown back so they need more time too. It is probably why the tee boxes may be a little longer for my taste. I'd prefer if they had gotten a little haircut.

Fairways are good but the only time I really saw them was walking in them. I saw evidence that the grounds crew had filled in a lot of divots so that's good to see.

Rough isn't bad at all, its pretty down right now so chances are you can probably play whatever you want. But there are some spot out there that your ball can settle down and make for a tricky shot out.

Bunkers were hit or miss. I found plenty too. Some had no sand and some had some, it was a crap shoot if you got in them.

I'd say if you were a non-resident hold off for now. If you were a resident it's certainly a better option than the punched North.

Punished myself in the wind on Sunday. Walked on as a single and got right out, showed up at 8:55 and got paired up with 3 great guys (all brothers) at 9:10. POP was phenomenal!! finished at 1pm, incredible, never waited on the group in front and never pushed from behind. Perhaps the chilly windy day kept some people away and maybe the ever increasing higher green fees ($78 for resident to walk). Course is in overall good condition.

Teeboxes were just fine. Great coverage and level, never an issue.

Fairways were darn near perfect, had great lies all day.

Bunkers were nice, not perfect, but never had an issue getting out, found a few of them, one was plugged about a foot below the lip on 14 right hand side of the green, was able to get it out, though.

Rough was surprisingly cut down and wasn't too much of an issue, easiest I've seen it in a long time.

Greens were pretty good. They held shots if they were struck perfectly, but they seemed a little more firm than usual, most had some roll out. They were their normal fast speed, but they were tough to read, none of us could seem to get a handle on them. None of us holed many putts beyond 5FT, crazy. Quite a few greens had many unfixed ball marks, kind of upsetting. Number 4 is temporary about 50yds short of the normal green, It's not really a green at all, it's the same as the fairway and it's not marked very well. Oh well, I finally made a par at 4, lol. I'd be pretty pissed if I paid $200 and had a temp green, though.

Saw the bev cart a couple of times. The pins were in super difficult positions. It dawned on me late in the round that they seemed to be placed in similar Sunday positions to the Farmers/PGA spots. Very tough with long irons to go for the pins. Overall, had a great day and I need to get out there more often.

Played this afternoon; walked up at 1:25 and was first off twilight at 2:00 on resident rates (Boy, does it feel good to say that). The South is in very good shape. Not much has changed since Rat-Patrol was last here. I would say the green are in better shape than his review (but afternoon Poa is always going to be bumpy) but all else remains the same. Good tee boxes, solid bunkers and very good fairways. POP was a solid 4:30 and saw the beverage cart quite a few times. Amazing for resident rates, overpriced for out of towners (especially on weekends). Awesome first experience here and looking forward to the next bout against the South.

First off twilight (2 pm now) on Sunday March 19th, got off a bit early and, although waiting to much for the constantly behind a hole group in front of us, finished in 4 1/2 hours. The course is in good shape, all over except the greens, it was twilight coming off some rain days so the po wasn't the smoothest I've seen. There were some bumpy, slow putts, some knocked off line, so it was hard getting them in the cup even from inside 3'. Also I don't remember any recent reviews mentioning the strange growth or fungus that seems to be invading the greens (unfortunately hole #4 green was closed with a temp green set up 70 yards short with just a flag and cup, no mowed down area, no circle, just a flag and cup. Strange and quite disappointing as there was no notice whatsoever concerning this condition). It was pin position #2 which involves some strange and difficult hole placements . . . front pins on 2,3,4 was a temp, 5 and 6. Then back pins on 9,11,12,13,14,15 and 17? South is a big boy course even from the greens, 6628 73.1/133 with long holes, deep sticky rough, deep faced bunkers, large deceptive greens (what other tour course puzzles the pros as much as Torrey South?). It was slightly wet, cold, windy and glorious as usually (despite the temp on #4). If I want an ego boost I play North, if I want to be humbled I play South.

Played the South course for the first time ever. What a treat! We had the 7:30 T time, overcast on the front with the sun breaking thru on the back nine. It was interesting seeing the course without all the tournament structures, just green fairways and blue sky. What a joy to play! Probably the best conditioned course I've played this winter season.

Greens: smooth and holding with medium speed.

Fairways: best I've played on this winter.

Rough: 1-2" higher than the fairways, very playable.

Traps: good condition.

POP: 4 1/2 hours.

Very friendly Staff.

Played South last Sunday first group out at twilight (better late than never, right?), actually finished with some light to spare. The course is in excellent shape and a steal for the $47 resident walking fee.
Tees: mostly level with some divot damage on the shorter par 3's (3 & 8), wide a perfectible playable
Fairways: niiiiiice, some good roll out and great to play from
Rough: I tried to avoid that as much as possible (one always should at Torrey), I believe it has been mown down from tournament length (which is good because you can find your ball), but still is thick and penalizing
Bunkers: perfect, best I've seen in quite awhile (I think even better than the deep, sometimes sloppy sand at some high end places), fairway or green side a joy to play from (much better than being in the rough!!!)
Greens: really, really niiiice firm with some bounce (especially the long par 4 12th that I had to lay up on and I could hear the "THUMP" of my well struck gap wedge approach as it landed in the middle of the green then rolled to the back fringe), they were fast, not lightening tournament speed, but rather quick and rolling well
POP: just over 4.5 hours, but not much waiting, it's just a long difficult, big boy golf course
Customer service: great, we were sent out 15 minutes early and saw the snack cart often
Walkability: I always walk this course it's just such a beautiful place
Highly recommended . . . anytime I can get a good time here or North, I'm ON IT!
