Greens were so much slower than I am use to them being it was hard for me to read greens. The fairways didn't roll out much, rough was sticky as always, the bunkers I was in were playable and as weber2323 just alluded to the warm up areas are the pits. You hit off mats, the pitch/chip areas are just slightly mown down areas, there is a small bunker with hard sand in it and today the putting green was closed. If, like the Canadian golfer I played with, I was paying full out side of city fare I would would NOT be a happy camper.
Last year was a bad year for Torrey all around (due to egos/politics that had the guy that readied Torrey for the US Open sent off to Mission Bay . . . which by the way is in great shape now! He worked at Balboa before being moved to Torrey and had it in the best shape it has EVER been in), so this is my first visit in quite a while, it's in better shape than last year but still far from the "Classic Torrey" that I have known in the past.

Got off early this morning and it was pretty empty I saw some 2 and 3somes in various groups ahead of us an even some behind us. As we teed off on 18 there was a 2some on 8 and another 2 coming behind them on 7. I guess people wanted to watch the pros play today. We finished in about 4 hrs 10 mins.

Greens are still pretty great. With the heat I think they are giving them a little extra water which is good because some of the greens that are exposed can get very firm. I thought they rolled with a very good pace. Certainly some ball marks out there that golfers need to fix.

The rest of the course seems to be showing the effects of the heat. Fairways are generally good with signs of browning and dry patches.

Rough is the same. Still some bite and thickness out there in certain areas and other areas are completely playable because the rough is dry and dormant.

I was in quite a few traps and they have wetter sand towards the middle of the bunkers and near the edges is dry sand. The ones I was in all had been raked and didn't notice any that were not.

I've said it before for a course of this caliber I think the range is pretty substandard. The mats are hard, it might be easier to hit off the concrete under the mat. Limited range golf balls and old ones at that. There are probably only 20 stations I would guess. I only warm up here when I need to. If I had a later time I'd warm up at stadium and then head over.

I'm kinda iffy on whether the resident rate is worth it. I like the greens enough to say yes but hope the rest of the course doesn't deteriorate. I can't say the nonresident rate is worth it at its current state.

Played 3 times here over the past week and I'll sum up all the reviews in one. The pace varied from 4 hours to 4:45. The later being an afternoon time during the week with a lot of juniors out there practicing for next week. It also seems like the course is really drying out.

I was hoping the greens would get better but they are still average speed at best and still bumpy. These were rolling so well prior to the aeration and now they have never healed right.

Fairways are great. Mowed well and divots for the most part are filled in. There are still a few unfilled ones.

Rough is down and not very penalizing. For the most part you can hit what you want but the ball can nestle down and make the lie a little more difficult.

Bunkers are terrible. I can't count how many times I have hit clay here. Some of the bunkers have been wet which makes playing out of it with no sand even harder. The funny thing is to the right of hole 9 there are mounds of sand. I'd like to see this get put in the bunkers. Also the bunkers are not consistent. For example I was one one side of the bunker in wet sand and another guy in our group was in the other part of the bunker in very dry sand.

Tee boxes are generally good with the par 3 having a little more wear. The par 3 3rd on the right lower box is really beat up.

I don't think it would be worth the nonresident rate at its current state and I'm wondering if the resident rate is worth it.

After sleeping thru my alarm this am I decided to go down and put my name on the wait list. It took about an hour and 15 to get off. Pace was good overall. There was a big back up on 3. When were the 3rd group on the tee by the time we got there. After that it was better with minimal waiting but the round still took 5 hours.

Greens continue to heal nicely and are starting to pick up pace. There are still a few bumps out there and a few unrepaired ball marks but I did like putting on them.

I played the blues and thought some of the tee boxes were actually a little further back than normal. Overall they were in good shape and so were the par 3s because it looks like they had moved them around a bit.

Fairways and rough are probably the same as last time and I would expect that to continue thru the junior worlds early next month. I don't think they will let the rough get out of hand before that.

I usually like the bunkers but something about today I didn't. The sand in the bunkers seemed really heavy today.

Torrey South's fairways are the best in San Diego. However, the bunkers were inconsistent and it want of more sand. We teed off at 2:10 and a lot of the bunkers had wet sand. With the steep bunker lips they need more sand so you can get under the ball. "Nuff said. And now the rough, although it was cut down, there are areas where if you hit your ball in the only way you will find it is if you step on it. Hitting out of the rough is a big boy job, don't get greedy like me... I usually shoot in the mid/lower 80's but left the course with a 97, sadly I felt proud to have broken 100... The green were rather slow for TP and I left a ton of putts short. Still, Torrey is the greatest test of golf around for the money. Leave your ego in the car...or you'll feel like Tiger on ambien haha

Played here 3 times over the last 4 days and the pace of play was very good anywhere between 4 and 4 1/2 hours. I was surprised as there didn't seem to be as many people out. We were actually a threesome today and when I was paying the starter indicated there was no one on the wait list.

Greens don't look all that great and appear to show evidence of the maintenance but putted better than they looked. Some were not as good as others. Pace was not that fast but were did get some rain/drizzle the last 2 mornings which I think slowed down the pace of the greens. I think they probably need a little more time to heal to justify the non resident fee.

Fairways are pretty good and 4 is back open but roped off to allow the grass to grow. As a result the grass hasn't been cut and a little thicker than normal. About 50/50 on the amount of divots that I saw that were filled vs unfilled.

Rough is down compared to the norm so it's pretty playable but there are places that have some bite. I tried to muscle a 6 iron on my second shot on 13 to the bottom of the hill and could only advance it 10 yds. In hindsight I should have gone with an 8 because it was that bad.

Bunkers were wet and heavy. Consistent but some had areas that were damper than others.

Customer service was great. I saw several marshals out there making sure people kept pace. Cart girl made her way about every 4th or 5th hole.

Not a bad choice for a resident but I'd hold off if you were a nonresident for now.

I had an opportunity to play here yesterday, 5/9/16, Monday. I drove down from LA and got to the course around noon and put my name down on the wait list for a Twilight time (2:30pm). I didn't mind waiting and preferred to save $73 ($183 regular rate vs $110 twilight).

During my wait, I practiced some putting, hit some balls at the range, bought a souvenir yardage book at the pro shop, and also had a sandwich and a beer from the makeshift snack bar.

Everyone I encountered was very friendly from the starters window to the staff in the pro shop. I heard my name get called right at 2pm and luckily I was able to get on the tee at 2:30pm. I was grouped with 3 other singles, all very nice guys from around the area.

As the prev review mentioned, #4 is playing as a 118yd par 3 and on this day, #9 was playing from the forward tees. There was one more hole that we played from the forward tees but I don't remember which hole it was.

Greens are healing from aeration about a month ago. Front 9 is much better than back 9. Back 9 is still very bumpy and putts did not roll straight.

I was in 1 fairway bunker which was nice and soft, and 1 greenside bunker which was hard and thin.

Fairways are beautiful, Rough is thick and extremely tough. Tee boxes were pretty good, mostly level, and not too chewed up.

I expected a tough course and a bad score but I really got my butt kicked bad. Normally, I'd be in the mid-80s, but this day, I humbly left with a 105. (white tees) It was still a great experience with amazing views and of course, perfect, san diego weather.

Played in the men's club outing today and was not expecting great greens and got what I thought. The greens are still recovering and still need a couple of weeks to fully heal. I was surprised that they were was fast as they were considering but there was always doubt in my mind about which bump would knock my putt off line.

Fairways were great but another disappointment is that there is a temporary tee on 4 making the hole about 120 yds because they are working on the fairway.

Rough was not too penalizing but there was some areas thicker than others.

Generally the sand was wet and firm. I did find the back bunker on 13 which was soft. I didn't like the sand. There was no splashing of bunkers but rather chunk and run.

Tee boxes were good. I don't remember any boxes that were unusually chewed up.

I'm going to wait a little bit to come back. I'm having a hard time justifying paying the resident rate right now.

Got the opportunity to play TP south for the first time since before it hosted the open. Living in San Diego but not the city I can not see paying the out of town rate for this course. I was very happy with my experience on Monday. The course was in great condition. From tee to green everything was great. Even did a couple of practice shoots from a bunker and they were in great shape also. Thanks to GK I knew they were going to punch the greens the next day.
