Played Torrey South Tuesday after the rain on Monday. It sprinkled on the front nine but was sunny on the back. Great day for golf at Torrey since both courses were virtually empty. Since it was wet, they closed the North for golf carts and restricted the South to cart paths only. Two of us took a cart and two walked. Also, since the cart entry markers were gone, I expect that the courses will both be cart paths only until the Farmers. That seems excessive for these firm fairways to me, and disrespectful to the paying customers. We only saw one maintenance worker on the course, and he was filling fairway divots.

The course was in very good shape overall, but I was disappointed in the slow and bumpy greens. Some of the greens were very good, so I don't think that the conditions could be completely blamed on Monday's rain. The bunkers, which I try to avoid at all costs, were wet, but easier to play than they were a couple of weeks ago, when they were heavy and not prepared. The rain should help settle the sand down going forward. Last year, around the tournament, they were great.

Amazingly, the rough was cut and very playable. It was not long and thick like before previous tournaments. And we didn't lose any balls!

Due to the wetness, the course played even longer than usual, which is a little too long for me. So the par four's were tough to hit in regulation.

But what a nice day to play Torrey South. No waiting and we easily kept ahead of the only group behind us, a twosome. And as a result of the playable conditions we mostly had pars, bogeys and a couple of birdies.

Our group tee'd off just a few minutes past our tee time,
pace of play was average considering how many players were on the course. We made it around the SOUTH 4 hrs, 35 minutes. There are times when 5 hour rounds should NOT be the norm! Yes, people playing the course for the first time need to enjoy the time but at the same time MUST keep pace of play. (Read further down my review).

This is a very noisy place with the GRAND STANDS going up on Holes #16, #17 which is adjacent to #8 Par 3. #11 has the foundation placed, ready for the building of stands. All kinds of workers throughout the course as the course is getting ready for the Farmer's Insurance PGA event in January 2012.

GREENS: Ball marks are being repaired nicely. Soft conditions, very easy to fix ball marks, DIVOT fixers are not needed. HOWEVER, I am very surprised majority of the greens are SUPER BUMPY right now. Yes, frost had occurred on a few holes EX: Hole #3,#4,#5, #7,#9, #12 were extremely bumpy because of it. The area had experienced colder than normal temperatures in the overnight hours this past week.

I'm sure as we get closer to the Farmer's Insurance PGA event, the greens will be rolled more to help smooth out the imperfections.
The speed of the greens are slower at this time & hard to tell how the golf ball will bounce into the hole!

Fairways: Looking pretty good, #17 & #18 have been given some attention but overall starting to fill in nicely. Divots? Players are NOT filling in the divots with sand but I do commend those players re-placing divots with grass are doing a very nice temporary job! Btw, soon it will be cart-path only, maybe two weeks maximum.

Rough: There isn't any right now, barely 1 1/2" SO PLAY THE COURSE NOW before the rough is thickened up to 4"+ inches, which means will make pace of play that much longer.

Bunkers: Sand is medium firm, very playable and consistent throughout the course.

The cart girls are doing a better job of not distracting the players, waiting for the players to complete their Tee shots before provided the players with the appropriate drinks, snacks etc. There is the HALF WAY house located behind #9 green should you not see the cart girls.

Pace of Play: OK, If the following EVER happens to you SIMPLY call the PRO shop and request the services of the Marshall.

On the back nine, our group struggled on hole #12 LONG PAR 4. GREENS were super bumpy...HOWEVER, the Threesome behind us was unaware of what the players were facing on the green. Someone in the Threesome yells a comment "TO PICK UP THE PUTTING". At that point, we were a hole behind..we picked up the pace to where NOW we made the green fairly quickly. We are ON THE GREEN, putting...I noticed that TWO of the players were near the 165 yard marker, just above the crest of the hill.

NEXT thing I hear is a golf ball lands to the right of the green, PIN HIGH! Did I just imagine this? The other players said, Did you hear that? what was it? THE 3rd player was at the bottom of the hill, JUST inside 130 yards! YES, it was a STATEMENT!!! Our group was being hit into ON PURPOSE while we were still putting. At that point, we were only 1/2 a hole behind the three players in front of our group all day.

I took the HIGH road, called the PRO SHOP, advised them of our situation KNOWING were are out of position and are taking steps to make up the difference. NOBODY should be ever HIT into to move someone along...
Within a few minutes, the Marshal showed up and "talked" to those players, then advised me personally since I made the call. Btw, the Marshal had seen our group all day and knew we were keeping pace until hole #12 as I explained. At the end of the round, I did not have to say a word to the "player" who was impatient...

Price is fine for So Cal residents, but visitors get hit with hefty fees. These courses are not for the beginner. Walking is the best way to enjoy Torrey. Greens can be very quick! And it gets very crowded- going off as a single is the easiest way I have found. Torrey North and South are great tracks - good conditions and very scenic. Plus the history is evident on every hold. North is substantially shorter than South but is much more picturesque than the South.

Played on Black Friday on the overall conditions are very good here. Greens were medium fast and smooth for the most part. A few ball marks that people didn't repair. Fairways were good and the rough was too. Rough is still growing so it is not penalizing, just around the greens is it a little thicker. It was about 5 hours so it was a tad slow out there. Can't wait to get back out here.

Played this past weekend and a tournament had gone off in the morning and the pace was really slow because of it. Took 5 1/2 hours to complete with a 3 hour front 9. Marshalls were out hustling the tournament along and apologized a number of times about the pace. It definitely picked up on the back so I appreciate their efforts. The greens still seem to be healing from the punching. There were only a handful of greens which didn't seem to show the effects of it. They could use some rolling and cutting. I'd say they were on the slower side so you really had to pound the ball at the hole. The fairways were in great shape and I don't remember any bare spots out there. The rough is down so there wasn't that much of a penalty for hitting it in there. Sand was good quality in both bunkers I went in.

Played Labor day and had a great time. Due to the traffic this course recieves you must stay off the rough with the cart...Due to the rough you should also keep your ball our of it. It was cloudy and just a tad damp as is sprinkled on and off that morning. When that grass is wet, that grass is tough!!! I have a love hate with Torrey because to me its just a really scenic muni however, being a local getting the locals rate, its worth it... Always well kept.

Played this course twice in the same day 9-3-11. First off the price was close to $300 for the first 18...we teed off at 930 sharp...replay was $130. Worth it? Yes and no. Yes because the area is beautiful and some of those holes are just magical. No because the rough was cut and aerated and in horrible shape...fairways were not much better. Only the greens were in fair condition. Foggy during most of the first 18...I know that is not the course's fault. So the first 18 was a pretty average round...shot 91...used same ball all round...not many spots to get in trouble as the fairways are wide and open.
The second 18 was the most magical time I have ever had on the course. Lunch then we teed off around 245 PM...high clouds but fog pushed back West so the ocean was visible on the holes it should have been. On hole 7 I wedged out for a birdie from 52 yards! On 12 I holed out an EAGLE (my first ever!) from 100 out...simply magical! Shot 91 on the second 18...birdied the #1 handicap hole and Eagled the #2 handicap hole. So overall a great day. If we hadn't have played the second 18 I would say to skip it for the almost $300 price tag...but 36 for nearly $400 plus holing out twice...one for Eagle??? PRICELESS.

What a difference a week makes. Looks like they are preparing for the overseeding this week. Lots of browned out areas in the fairways and rough. Also the rough has been signifcantly cut down. On the bright side I thought the greens were fantastic. They had good pace and pretty fast, I just wish people would be a little more diligent in repairing their ball marks. Seems to be getting more and more out there. I was in many bunkers today and I thought a fair amount of them were pretty thin. I have a little hard time justifying the fee so I would probably wait a couple of weeks until the overseeding has been completed. Another bright note is that we finished in a little over 4 hours for a weekend which was surprising.

Conditions are much better since I last came here. Greens don't have any problems, like last time when there seemed to be some fungus growing on them. Greens were smooth and medium fast speed. There were some ball marks from people not repairing them. Fairway was good as always and I think the rough was recently cut down. But there were spots that were pretty thick. I was in a couple of bunkers (4 I think) and one of the traps was pretty thin but the others were good. Course was in good shape but just a general observation was that I thought the front 9 was in a little better shape than the back 9, I'm probably splitting hairs with that. The group ahead of us started a hole behind the group in front of them but the marshal stayed on top of them and they caught up to the group in front of them by the turn. Cart girl came by quite a bit which was good because I did run out of water on the back 9.
