There hasn't been a post here since May so I thought I'd post my comments but then again this probably means nothing since maintenance is scheduled here next week. Played at 8 on Friday and got done in just under 5 hours. Course is pretty brown from the summer conditions however I thought the greens were in very good shape compared to the typical greens I get a TP. I thought the speed on these greens were very good. I will say that as a non-resident the green fee is not worth the condition that it is in but on the other hand for a resident the green fee is worth it in my opinion. Sand was good, rough was not because it was thin and dry. Only saw the cart girl once and it was hot.

Played the south course at Torrey on 06-29-07 and wasnt impressed at all. The greens were decent, the fairways were beat, the tee boxes were ok and the rough wasnt as 'rough' as I had hoped, it really seemed like the muni course that it is, some bunkers had hard clay exposed right next to the numerous gopher holes in the lips of the bunkers. I guess my expectations were too lofty going in. It was carts on paths all day and the course needs to stay that way till the open in 08 as it is a far cry from an Open caliber course right now. If you play here I hope its on the company dime as my round was, If I had paid out of my own pocket I would have been upset, the price is way off compared top the condition. If you are paying out of your own pocket take your money to a course that you know is worthy, Torrey isnt, at least not right now.

Played here 5/9 on company nickel. This course is challenging but most certainly not worth the money. Fairways had sand in them to remove winter rye grass per the starter. For ocean views, Los Verdes at $25 is much better than $160 greenies with cart for visitors from outside San Diego. Strictly an average muni. I cannot recommend this course. It has a long way to go to reach US Open standards for 2008.

course is playing pretty good - greens were in pretty good shape, now >1mo after aeration. sneaky fast - they were soft, big ballmarks would result from wedge shots, but surprisingly fast on some holes. but definitely some inconsistency from hole to hole, some downhill putts would just keep going, others i actually had die before the hole. bumpy in spots, but what i'd expect for a course that gets so much traffic. Not much evidence of renovations for next year's open, only glaring exception is the front apron to 13th green, which is bare and being resodded. rough was low enough (2-3") to not be overly penal.
i've played south once before, but now realize why i didn't remember a lot - post-traumatic stress blocked my memory... TOUGH, and we played from the whites! but excellent shot values - just about every tee shot demands thought on placement, and the greens, though not small, are such that you definitely want to be aiming for a particular spot, being a few feet off can result in a 30 foot put with two or more breaks. but flip side is, it's hard to play "blind" - caddy would be ideal, should've checked to see if the shop has a good yardage/cheat book.
it is incongruous that this course is a muni - when we were finishing up the round, we saw the late afternoon golfers, out in t-shirts and running shoes. i don't have a problem with how anyone chooses to dress, nor does what you wear correlate with how you play, but it is irritating to have golfers who are out there, totally over their heads, two practice swings only to duff it 75 yards into the trees, contributing to a 5+ hour round and waiting on every shot, on a Tuesday afternoon. Shudder to think what it's like on the weekend. not a single marshal to be seen, either. not sure that it's worth the cost ($130 to walk on a weekday), i'm sure the city of SD knows they have a good thing going, fleecing all the out-of-towners who want to play a US open track.
if i lived locally, i'd gladly pay the local fare to get the course management aspect under my belt, but it's a much harder sell at $130+ a pop.

Played March 30, 2007 twilight. Well lets just say I was disappointed. The greens were slow and bumpy. The fairways were not as firm and lush as I thought they would be. Granted they did aerate 3 weeks ago, and were doing maintenance to the cart paths and some fairways, but the course was not what I expected. The course and the layout is beautiful. The cliffs and the gliders, lodge, helicopters and ocean background is worth a lot, but for all of the hype I expect perfect conditions and smooth fast greens. This just wasn't the case. I am so glad we played twilight and did not pay the full price. When this course is in perfect playing conditions, then I wouldn't mind paying more than $100, but right now...I would not play it.

THE CITY IS DOING SOME WORK ON THE COURSE TO GET IT READY FOR THE OPEN NEXT YEAR BUT STILL WORTH EVERY PENNIE. PLAYED FROM THE BLUES AND I DONT REMEMBER EVER HAVING A SHORT IRON TO THE GREEN. COURSE IS LONG AND WHEN THEY LET THE ROUGH GET 3" THICK GOODLUCK. PLAYING THIS COURSE MAKES YOU SEE JSUT HOW GOOD THE PROS ARE. WILL BE BACK BEFORE THE OPEN. CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF YOU WONT BE SORRY.

Great golf course, certainly can see why they would play a US Open here. Old style course, very easy to make a bogey on every hole. Terrific variety of holes, great views. The course has a lot of work being done right now but not so much that it hinders from play. Walk the course! A must play if your in San Diego.

I played this course and walked it to save money, I was tired but had a blast. You really enjoy the course more when walking it. Course is costly but what course isn't thats on the ocean ? Really sin... Continue »

Still great to play a course you see on TV every year for the Buick Invitational..
