Greens looked like they were aerated last week. They played very slow, but the sand covering the green was pretty even, so they weren't as bumpy as I expected. Still, it's no fun to see a puff of dust come up when you hit the green. I also saw plenty of ball marks on the greens, as if people didn't care about damaging the sandy greens. Rough was probably lower than I've ever seen it at Torrey South, maybe 1-3 inches. But the ball still nestles down, and you can easily lose your ball in rough that's only a few yards off the fairway. I believe the South course has tee times every ten minutes (compared to every seven minutes on the North), and although we were constantly a hole behind, we weren't pushed at all with our 11:30am tee time. Maybe people heard about the greens and flocked to the North course, because that course looked packed. Prices were raised on 7/1/04. As a San Diego resident, I paid $45, but my out-of-town partner paid the weekend/holiday rate of $135. Luckily I checked Greenskeeper.org beforehand and told him about the reviews about the greens, so he was forewarned about their condition.

Yes I said 1.5!!!! I really have to give a big thumbs up to the TP grounds staff....I bet they get a lot of complaining from the public about the slow greens......everyone loves to putt on lettuce..The greens are so bad that they can't even cut them down for San diego City Am. How embarassing for the City of San Diego...
The Ladies and Gentlemen Playing in this tournament deserve a little bit of respect.....after all many of them are why TPS is getting an Open....Well Spend your big bucks and bring a little bit of "Ranch Dressing" it might make your putts roll a little faster.

The course is in great shape. Greens were smooth, but slow. I learned from JohnnyGK that most courses' greens are longest on Mondays because of their cutting schedule. Fairways and rough are pretty lush. Bunkers are in great shape. Very well maintained for the amount of traffic.
Very nice layout which gives the feeling of being the only group out there even though we were waiting to hit on a couple of holes. Can't beat it with the twilight resident rate of $25.

Paid $34 for the North course, but was asked to play the South. No problemo... Course is in great shape. The only two things I would complain about are... first, the ballmarks on the greens. No one seemed to be fixing them. #18 looked like a minefield. Second, a few of the tee boxes are slightly sloped. Nothing too bad.
Fairways are nice, the rough is playable along the fairways and gets longer and deeper around the greens. Play took 5 hours. Not bad considering it's a weekend and I was paired with the last group of a tournament. Something I have to mention is my playing partner commenting on how wonderful the service was at this course.
All I have to say is I'm glad I live in La Jolla.

Played twilight. The group in front of us was super fast so we had no wait at each tee. (no, we weren't slow) Course is in great shape. Fairways and teeboxes were excellent except for so unrepared divots at the tees which is normal. The fairway rough was manageable, about 2 inches. The greenside rough was pretty long. Two of my playing partners had a tough time getting out of it at times. Bunkers were decent. Previous groups didn't rake properly so I had some tough lies to deal with. Traps seemed to have only a thin layer of dry sand before hitting moist sand. Greens were ok. Some are still bumpy from aeration, but most were smooth and medium to fast speed. Overall a great round. Can't wait to get back.

Honestly, I just don't understand why all of the bad press for this course on here. I thought this course was outstanding!!! Watching The Buick on TV I thought the course looked a little brown or burnt out but that was not the case at all. I thought the conditions were good. The rough was punishing and the fairways good. The only thing that surprised me was that the greens were much slower than I expected for this type of course. I suppose it's tough to justify a $185 greenfee but for me, being on vacation, I was very happy I played it. And probably would again if I get the opportunity to come back to SD.

My day off. Never played Torrey Pines Golf Course so decided to chance it as a single. Got there around 10:15 and waited TWO HOURS before getting out! I was taken by the views and mystique of the course. I was totally disappointed with the shape of the golf course. With all the hype and publicity the course gets, it’s just WAY over played. How they get this place ready for the Buick every year is beyond me. Pace of play was suffocating slow and the $95 green fee was to much to pay.
