TP South was a lot of fun, beautiful views. Very tough course and hard greens to read. Just knowing I was on a championship course where Tiger, Vijay, Phil, and Ernie had just played was a great feeling and gave validation to my golf game.

A word of caution. The cold grass herbicide sprayed a couple of weeks ago is really working now, and on some holes the herbicide has affected the fairways as well. Some fairways have been sanded again... Continue »

A word of caution. The cold grass herbicide sprayed a couple of weeks ago is really working now, and on some holes the herbicide has affected the fairways as well. Some fairways have been sanded again. The greens are getting better but still need improvement. First time players seeking a great venue will be disappointed. The good news is the course is finally being worked on. Play the North for a while.

I'm sure he would rate them as very slow, I would rate them at medium slow. I thought the fairways were just a shade to long. Bunkers are improving. Better maintained and the sand in them I think has been moved around to make them more uniform over last week. Saw a huge pile of sand in the maintenance area. Maybe destined for the bunkers? There is a notice at the starters booth cautioning the rough has been sprayed with a cold grass herbicide? They are trying to kill off one type of grass to make the rough more uniform. Couldn't see any effect today, but it might be something to watch down the road.

Not as horrible as I was led to believe. Nevertheless it is still in sub-par condition. I do believe that in this case it is in rough shape due to much needed maintenance being done not general neglect as in recent years. Fairways a little long. They had been recently sanded. #5 fairway was punched hard and the left side landing area is marked as "ground under repair". The same tees as always were "bunched". All 3 mens tees were together on #3, #8. The "Blue tees" didn't play from the blue markers on many holes. #3, #8, #12, #14 played closer to or at the white markers. # 15 Blue played in front of the white tee box and were actually placed on the back green tee box, but still at least 85 yards in front of the true "blue" markers. Same on #9 as well. (The Blacks are never set up ). I am sure it is to speed up play, and make the course much more enjoyable for the average amature golfer. Think about it, the "Green Tees" are rated over 72. The rough was not consistant. Some areas really deep, but most cut to 2 or so inches. Some areas are thin. If you miss the fairways you get what you get. The bunkers LOOKED good. Did not play consistant. The botton of many bunkers had a thin layer sand and shots were likely to bounce off the hardpan. The greens. (Sigh) Well, at least they are trying, and they are getting better. They might be up to a "C-" now. If they ever "fix" them so that they can remain in tour or near tour condition for more than 7 days a year, then this course would be awsome (if played from the proper tees.) Hey there are a lot of courses out there that are almost always in top shape, why not Torrey?

Great golf course, keep an eye on any ball headed for the rough...very long stuff. Try to keep the ball below the hole on #1, #5 and #10 or you might not be able to stop it coming back the other way.

Played in the afternoon after heavy rains in the morning. The course was playing pretty long due to wet conditions. Half the bunkers had pools in them. The greens were soft and slow at tiems. They were also pretty bumpy. Other than that, the course is in decent shape. A good deal for the twilight rate.

Torrey Pines South is a fairly good shape. The greens are a bit quicker than they appear, but fairly bumpy (perhaps because of the two different types of grasses on the greens?). The fairways and sand traps are in excellent shape.

Even though the rough is cut short, this is a TOUGH course. The no. 18 handicap hole (the easiest hole on the course), is a 209-yard par 3 to an elevated green surrounded by big deep bunkers. Several par 4s are close to 500 yards in length. Get a few beginning golfers on the course and the entire thing backs up for hours. Our round took more than 5.5 hours.
