Had the opportunity to play this private course today, due to a friend winning an auction to play here. The course is in very good shape. Tees to fairways were nice and green. Rough was cut to just the right height, barely any bare spots. Both greenside and fairway bunkers contained nice fluffy sand. Greens were nice, level, contained a dusting of sand but it did not affect your putts. They were quick and some greens were tricky to judge the break causing some 3 putts. This is what country club golf plays like.

Recently played in Golf Moose's "Member for A Day" with fellow GK'er, Kassper7, who was vacationing with his family. Easy to see how and why Perry won the 2017 GK Cup 9 with his fine game & scrambling prowess. GK' s members, Sbarajasjr and Kassper7 have already reviewed the course conditions. This review expands on their reviews without being redundant. My take was the course was in excellent conditions throughout on an average layout design. Shadowridge GC is a private 18-hole golf course, Par 72, located in Vista, CA. The course, with moderate elevation changes, was designed by David Rainville in 1981. Shadowridge GC is one of the lower tier courses operated by ClubCorp catering to a predominately over +50 age membership who live in the Shadowridge Golf Community. Homes, condos and apartments lined the course. The occasional ricochet off the homes can be heard throughout the round. Course is open Tues - Thurs. Guest fees range from $55-$110, depending on days and time. Closed Mondays for maintenance and/or for outside tournament events. Driving Range: 16 Stations w/ mats only with uphill target greens. Non-Lighted. Two large putting greens. Green speeds higher on practice greens than course. Small fully stocked Pro Shop. Rental clubs are available. The Pro Shop closes at 6PM. Fully stocked bar and full menu dining area located in the clubhouse. Outdoor concession area with sandwiches, soda and beer. Roving beer cart with limited snacks, beer, soda and mixed drinks. Concession prices are high as expected for a country club visit. No outside food and beverage allowed. Dress Code enforced. No denims, cut-offs, or collar less shirts allowed. Shirts must be tucked in and hats removed when entering clubhouse. E-Z Go Golf Carts were fairly new, complete with fold down windshields and sand bottles. Surprisingly, NO GPS or USB ports. Yardages can be found on sprinkler heads. Pace of Play: Slow. Took our threesome, 4.75 Hrs. Some short Par 5's may be reachable in 2 for long ball hitters which will add to the delays. From the black tees the course plays to 7,002 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,693 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 14, a par-5 that plays to 557 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 12, a par-3 that plays to 151 yards from the back tees. Watch out for # 3, a 407 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 12, a 151 yard par-3. Water comes in play on 3 holes.

Very difficult review for me to write - played in the GolfMoose Member for a day. Got paired with jmo1pro2 - meeting another GK'er always means a better time on the links and very much enjoyed my day with him and his friend. Wish I had noticed Sal was there as well but read his review for conditions.

Why a hard review to write? Nothing impressed me enough to mention here and nothing struck me as bad enough to complain about. Is the layout fun? I guess - I feel like the 3 or 4 of the holes we're designs recycled from earlier in the round. The use of water sometimes feels a bit cliche but nothing that bothered me. The only hole I could complain about the design might also be the most interesting so I'll hold my tongue there. It's got natural elevation changes - which I like but somehow it didn't seem to translate to more interesting holes. The whole course is a bit too house-y for my taste but it's pretty generous out there - so not really worrisome. The rough is penal and the trees wait for your ball to settle and then stretch out branches to block your next shot so while sometime it feels easy out there - once you are in the wrong place - you need to pick your next shot wisely.

Anyway - I feel very lucky to have only paid $50 to get to play it and it's completely worth that price. Maybe that's why they gouged me $5 for a Gatorade - to make up for it.

Played here today as part of the Golfmoose “Member for a Day” outing; their first in So. Cal! Got paired up with GK member Sparky14 (Steve) and that added to the enjoyment out there (also saw GK member Long4Par a few groups behind so GK was well represented). It was a perfect day for golf with temperatures mild for the region, a steady breeze all day, and a well organized outing that ran a shade over 4 hours. On to the review...

Tee boxes: Overall good condition. We played blues except for a handful of contest holes and I never had trouble finding turf to drive my tee into. Ground seemed pretty level and I didn’t see any issues with conditioning.

Fairways: Pretty good considering this area gets some serious high temps during summer (in San Diego-terms). Green color throughout and I felt the roll was fair. I only found one actual divot in the turf, but any bad shots were not to be blamed on the condition of the fairways today.

Rough: Overall good shape yet somewhat penal. I distinctly remember two shots from the rough that played with my head a bit; both cases the ball was in the thick stuff and I had to club up two numbers just to get to the green.

Bunkers: Okay shape throughout. The green side bunkers had enough sand in them to be able to hit out, even if it wasn’t pristine white beach sand. Fairways bunkers were a bit more precarious to work with as some had almost no sand or rock hard sand. Rakes were ample and most people did a good job cleaning them up.

Greens: Good condition. It looks like they punched about 3-4 weeks ago, though I didn’t see breaks affected by the visible pockmarks. The speed seemed medium and the breaks were also not terribly difficult (even if my score indicated otherwise).

ETC: Staff was friendly; both the Golfmoose and the Shadowridge people. Ample parking today. The carts could stand to be updated, especially with some GPS. Overall the layout is comparable to the recently closed Carmel Mtn. Ranch; not insanely difficult but with a few interesting holes.

I was invited out by a friend of a friend to play at Shadowridge yesterday afternoon, July 20, 2018. This review will not be a review of the amenities, staff, etc but solely of the golf course and its conditions.

Tee-Time: 4:15pm
POP: 3:15 (1:30 front 9, 1:45 back 9, 1:00 second time on front 9)

Greens:
The greens here were very awesome and rolled super true. Very minimal ball marks but being so late in the day there were footprint marks around the cup. Greens were on the faster end of greens in San Diego at this time of year, but on the slower end of private courses that I have played in the past. Overall, some of the most true-rolling greens I have ever played and was thoroughly impressed. The were also fairly firm but receptive to shots.

Fairways:
Great fairways with no bare or soggy spots. There was one hole with marked ground under repair but it didn't seem to have any issue. Fairways were semi-firm and good shots were rewarded with a decent amount of roll and good lies for approach shots.

Bunkers:
Bunkers were all very uniform from fairway to greenside. These bunkers consisted of the darker, heavier sand that is more coarse than I am used to but they had enough sand to get under the ball without much effort.

Rough:
The rough was really interesting here. It reminded me of the rough at courses in Palm Springs where it doesn't look long but its just super fluffy and your ball will sink down into it. In the end, the rough was pretty punishing if you missed into more than the first cut.

Overall:
This course was amazing in my opinion. It was a great mix of distances and types of shots required. There were a lot of risk/reward situations without all the gimmicky setups that tend to accompany risk/reward situations. If you have the opportunity, check it out!

I was very pleased to get an invitation to play here on Thursday late morning. Only played here once before, 3-4 years ago. Customer service: Excellent; a cart pulled up as I parked my car. The young man was helpful getting me pointed in the correct direction. Friendly attendant in the Pro Shop. Nice driving range and putting areas. Practice green was much faster than the greens on the course. Fairway: very wide, firm and in good condition. Greens: smooth, medium to fast, and "holding" Rough: 2-3" high, very playable. Traps: firm. POP: just over 4 hours. A very enjoyable day, play there if you get the opportunity!

After playing Woods Valley, stopped by Shadowridge. Michael in the pro shop was great, git me out within 20 minutes. The course is in exceptionally nice condition. Greens were quick and rolled true. Fairways were very lush. All the bunkers were well groomed and had plenty of sand. Rough was spotty at times.

This is a nice golf course which offers a fair test of golf. Everyone at the course was friendly and easy going. Not what you might expect at a private club to an "outsider" Decent pace of play. 4 1/2 hours, but no real waiting, just a constant flow.

Checked my records and saw that I have not played here since 7/23/1983, that's over 33 years !! Where has the time gone. The course was public then. I must confess that I had zero recall of the course, and now after playing, I'm ashamed to admit, I remembered nothing about this course ..... not one hole! The only thing I do remember is they were spraying the grass with a green dye so the course would look good for a tournament which they were preparing to host.

The course was in superb condition. The greens were very quick, and if you got above the hole or "short-sided" yourself, you were in big trouble. I love fast greens, but have to admit I struggled with these greens. Everything else was in excellent shape. The staff was also terrific. While the course itself did not blow me away, everything else was first class. I promised myself it would not be 33 years until I return again. ( In part because in 33 years I will most probably be looking up at divots rather than down at them.)

Played my GK Match with Shaunstorm123 yesterday (3/31) and although the match was over well before the round was, I was honored to play a private track for the first time. The course reminded me of Carmel Mountain Ranch and Eastlake CC but in slightly better condition. On to the review:

Tee-boxes: It was my understanding they had just fixed/worked on them so I wasn't expecting much but every hole had ample space to drive your tee into. Some had divots that shouldn't have but otherwise all were level and had lots of green to choose from. Loved seeing lots of tee-box choices for all skill levels.

Fairways: Great condition! I don't remember one bad lie and although they weren't sparkling green, they were true and offered good/great roll on most every shot. With members like Shaun taking care of divots, it's no wonder they are in such good shape.

Rough: Not overly penalizing with length or difficulty, what really gets you here are the trees that are peppered everywhere in the rough.

Sand: Every bunker I was in had a mix of white fluffy sand and some dirt-like material; however they were very playable and did offer the opportunity to hit a good shot. Ample rakes as well.

Greens: The highlight of the round for sure. As Shaun mentioned previously, they are lightning fast and have some seriously hard breaks to them. Condition-wise they were excellent but be warned they are difficult to read.

ETC: It's a country club, so everything you would expect from a country club was there; amazing customer service, great facilities, free range balls, towels in the carts and an overall atmosphere you would come to expect from a place that probably isn't cheap to be a member of. The course itself is interesting enough with a nice variety of holes. If you are invited to play, I would definitely recommend it.
