Just got back from an early morning , windy round today at Rustic Canyon joined by Nickesquire1. Thanks for the company Nick. Course was in great shape and playing firm. With the fierce wind, tough greens, tough pin placements, nasty waste bunkers…Rustic was bearing all her teeth today. Shot my highest round in over a year but still loved the golf experience. It plays, true to its nature, like a LINKS style course and as such, unless you know how to play in the wind and understand how to approach the green complexes with bump in runs as well as leaving yourself on the correct sides of the pin, your score is doomed. But while your struggling out there, your playing shots you can’t find anywhere in California. You’re forced to stretch the limits of your golf creativity and in the process you're getting better at the game. Meanwhile you’re surrounded by nature, taking in all the beauty and the exceptional design of the course. It does not surprise me that for 7 straight years Rustic Canyon has won “Most Worth The Green Fee” in Ventura County as voted by, you, the members of Greenskeeper.org. I highly recommend playing this course.

I visit Westlake Village about 4 times a year and make it a point to play Rustic Canyon every time out. This is just a really fun, challenging course. It requires a lot of thinking, and imagination.... Continue »

I visit Westlake Village about 4 times a year and make it a point to play Rustic Canyon every time out. This is just a really fun, challenging course. It requires a lot of thinking, and imagination. And when the greens are as fast as they were the week before Christmas, you will see poor chips and putts rejected as much as 20 yards back off the green. Your short game will be humbled with these quick, sloping greens. I've played Rustic when the greens are a little slower, and it's a whole new test when they get them running with pace. Every guy in our group, at least a couple times, watched as their ball took a slope on the green, and rolled father away than where they started. I love it. They didn't think it was so funny. Each hole is memorable, which is the true test of a great design. The fact that they give single walk-ons free range balls while they wait is a nice little touch. Not as nice as if they'd take single tee times, but still a touch of class. Only drawback was pace of play. We played in 5.5 hours on a weekday. But once again, Rustic Canyon provided a great day! Best course in Ventura County.

Out at Rustic with a buddy morning of 12/21. Course is playing very dry and quick at this time. Greens are very hard and are putting pure and quick. Fairways are rock hard and are creating alot of roll. Rustic is always a test from the blue or black tees and has so much variety on the back nine. Five par 5's always makes for a fun round.

Out at Rustic this morning. Conditions are overall good for Rustic. Rain helped out slow greens down some but they are still quick and true and are putting beautiful(stay below the hole). Some of the green complexes are 75 to 100 feet long and lag putting is tested here. The fairways are in good shape and with only some bare or dry patches. The tees are always flat and maintained well. Holes #5 through #7 from the tips will continue to test your game as well as some of the last 5 holes on the course. The staff is always friendly, the course is always challenging, the food is good at the grill and the price is always right to play at Rustic, especially during the week.

Played Rustic from the tips late this morning and I must say the course conditions were tough, diabolical pin placements, super fast greens and not a lot of grass on the fairways. The greens are fast and are in great shape. They are putting over a 10 on the stimp and are deadly above the hole. They are holding shots at this time from the fairways. The fairways(especially the front nine are very tight and dry in most spots). Lots of tight lies....need more H2o. The tees are level and are in good shape. The bunkers are decent. Played as a twosome and we walked it in 4 hours 15 minutes...great pace of play....great test of character....just wish the fairways had a little more grass to them.

Played here Sunday November 15. Started at 7:00 AM and finished at 11:00AM, great pace of play! The course was in excellent condition, everything, greens, tees fairways, bunkers, all great. Santa Ana winds were blowing I'm guessing from 30-40 mph, which made the course interesting if unplayable, 124 yard 3 wood anyone? The problem was more with the greens and the ball had a difficult time stopping, and in most cases was just would not stay on the green, and if it did stay on the green, putting was impossible. I look forward to a return to Rustic Canyon once the Santa Ana's are over.

My first ever bad experience at one of my favorite courses. Let me first say that conditions are absolutely top notch. Greens are smooth, firm and fast, and everything else is lush, lush, lush. Despite a generous 10 minutes between groups, by the second hole, the group in front of us was 2 shots out of position. By the 4th, it was almost an entire hole. On the 6th hole, the entire course came to a stop, and there were as many as 3 groups parked at the tee. Up ahead, entire par 5's sat empty. No marshaling whatsoever. Being tired of waiting on every single shot and on pace for at best a 5.5 hour round, we abandoned the course at the turn. Maybe the combination of great conditioning and low greens fees is the problem. There seem to be lots of inconsiderate golfers frequenting the course who are unfamiliar or unconcerned with other golfers and the pace of play. The course, by virtue of its lack of having Marshals on staff, seems ill-equipped to deal with the problem. The pro shop staff is top notch, and listened to our concerns respectfully. We were told that this seems to happen only on Friday and Saturday. Maybe a part time Marshal on those days? Great course, but to be avoided on peak days, or at least go in with the proper expectation of a long, slow round.

Played 11/2 from the tips....Course is in good shape....fairways on back nine seem lush and in a little better shape than the front nine fairways which were still in good shape but were dry in some spots. Greens are returning to quick Rustic greens but are holding shots nice from the fairway..several three putts in our group(I had two putts that went 10 feet by(lol).....some fringes are wet and soft(we had a ball plug in front of #16 green which buried into the fringe). Tees were in good shape and were sanded and punched on some holes. Staff is always friendly here and got me out as a single with a busy lunch crowd on a Monday? Course is getting alot of play. Great challenge from the tips....new addition(Red Stakes) to ESA areas throughout the course can bite you if you are wayward.
