Out mid-day Friday, Sept 25th. No matter the conditions, Rustic is a great test of golf. Even beyond Olivas, Rustic will challenge your shot making abilities into the greens, and even once on, challenge your putting skills more.
All aspects/overall conditions are great; 7-8. For me, the bottom line remains: would I reco a 50 mile drive to play this course? For Rustic, yes. Try to remember 2 things: the wide open fairways have not much to do with scoring low here: 1] the game is hitting onto the greens correctly and playing off the fringes if you miss; 2] EVERYTHING breaks towards the valley

Played Rustic Canyon this afternoon twilight from the blues. Have not played here in some time. I was impressed with the conditions of the course. The summer heat did not do to much damage and Rustic should be commended on the job they have done in keeping the tees, fairways and greens in good shape. Only some dry spots in a couple fairways(#13) but for the most part great conditions at Rustic. The greens are holding irons very well and are soft for Rustic's standards. The pace of play was good. Our group finished in 4 hours. The wind was not a factor that much today, great scoring conditions. Considering that you can walk this at twilight during the week for 22 bucks and ride it for 30 it is a steal. Friendly staff inside the pro-shop and some great food inside the grill. One of the true gem's of Ventura County.

I played Rustic Canyon with a friend on September 2 to get away from the smoke coming from the terrible wild fires. We teed off at 11:00 a.m. and each paid the mid-day rate of $43 with a cart.

We played as a twosome and were held up a bit on the tougher back nine, but got around in about 4 1/2 hours. I shot net par to my very high handicap, so I was pretty happy with my score.

The course is in very good shape. The key feature of this course is the number of false fronts to many of the greens. Actually, these areas are not too bad for us high handicappers, because we can usually putt up onto the green to go for our bogeys, double bogeys, others, etc. Low handicappers might be disappointed to hit good approach shots that end up missing the green.

Customer service was friendly in the pro shop, cart shed and on-course. Overall, it was quite an enjoyable golf experience.

Played on 9-5-09. While Rustic remains one of my favorites, pace of play has gotten pretty bad lately - 5 1/2 hours! The foursome two groups ahead of us had no business playing the blue tees. On the par three 4th hole, not one person made it past the bunker. Can't imagine what happened on 14. They were 1 to 2 holes behind the whole day. Beyond that, a beautiful day at Rustic.

Played in the morning on 9/4/09. The course is in relatively good condition. Some bare spots in some fairways, but the greens were in very good shape, very soft and receptive to approach shots. I noticed a lot of divots on fairways and pitch marks on the greens that were not repaired by the players. What's up with that? In this summer hot spell, the course is doing an excellent job in maintaining the course.

Not that the back has been aerated, just burnt and dead in a few holes though nothing to cry about-- just aesthetics. All in all, it's not bad. The course is a good course. But I think the greens fee could be lesser than $60/$73 to ride in the morning. It's just not that great a value... though I'm sure they have lesser rate later in the day.

Played this morning, started a few minutes before 6AM and finished around 8:20AM. Pace of play was fine. The course was in good condition, they had done small plugs on the green a week ago, but those were gone, They are doing plugs on the 16th fairway now.

What made play a little hard is the fog on the lower section of the course. Visibility was 100 yards but much less for seeing the golf ball. It cleared up when I came to the cross bunker at #10, and it was truly a magical experience.

I've read many of the other reviews of Rustic Canyon and read of the hard bunkers, the dried out fairways and so forth. The thing with Rustic is that a dry spot here or there in the fairway, or the sand that is hard in the bunkers fits in so well with this place. Even the bunny rabbits and ground squirrels running all over (and their holes) just fit in with the property. The place is absolutely great right now.
