Course is not in the best shape, but as long as the greens are good (and they were), it doesn't need to be. the layout is so much better than anywhere else.

They need to pay more attention to worn spots on fairways and near greens. Looked sloppy. Back nine magical. Great views, great shot values, excellent conditions. Play the back nine twice and you will have one of the best bargains in America. Plow the front and start again. Sorry, Gil.

Played this course 9/25 while visiting So Cal. Great value. I would highly suggest playing this course. Very nice setting and fun layout. Greens are borderline goofy/tricked-up, but otherwise an enjoyable round. I drove up the coast two hours the next day and played La Purisima, which has to be a "must play".

Well, it's got to be said.

Rustic Canyon has been and will continue to be what I consider my "home" course, but the conditions have deteriorated significantly over the past year. The fairways have gotten patchy in the moderate to high traffic areas, the rough is spotty, and there are large areas that used to be turf that are now simply desert hardpan (13 comes to mind)

For my dollar, I really hope they get their act together and figure out a solution to the conditioning problems. The course gets a lot of play, yes, but there's got to be something else going on here.

The greens are for the most part decent, and the collars were better than I thought they would be upon first seeing the fairways, but the fairways and rough are borderline unacceptable.

It's a shame, too - the conditions are a far cry from even 2 years ago when you could count on fairways that rolled like carpet and generally consistent and challenging rough.

Layout-wise, it's still the best public course in southern california...but the deterioration in conditioning is troubling.

I like this course because it offers the opportunity for a different playing style than most of the other Southern California courses. The golfer can use his or her pitch an run shot to the extreme. This is not possible on many of the older courses around Southern California because of the type of grass that has taken over. On such courses you have to fly it directly to the green. The difference in the nines offers a great warmup for the back nine which is much tougher. Truly a unique experience, but if you are not used to a "running game type of golf" don't expect a good score the first time out. The course will grow on you with course knowledge.
