Played the blues (70.6/129/6557) in 4H, 15M on their twilight rate of $30 including a cart. Was matched up with another single for an enjoyable round, thanks Rich! The weather was an overcast, breezy afternoon in the mid to high 60's. We finally went around a 4some that was holding us up 3-5 minutes per shot from holes 6-10 w/o even thinking of waiving us through, or this would have been a 3 1/2 hour round. Nothing like skipping a hole, then coming back and driving a 1/2 mile out of your way to play the hole you missed and still being in the return cart area departing for your car when they finally are reaching 18 green to putt out. It would have been a VERY distressing back 9 otherwise, tell you that! The carts were good, GPS to the front, middle & back of the green with yardage markers to fairway traps on some holes. They do not allow walking on this course due to the hilly nature and the distance between some holes. This layout is somewhat quirky. Par 37 on the front, par 35 on the back, five par 5's and five par 3's. Hole 3 is a par 4 with a blind tee shot over a hill that has OB left and is red staked right with maybe 35 yards in between including rough on each side. Hole 8 is a severely downhill par 4 with a forced carry to a diagonal fairway that could be anywhere from a mid iron to a driver depending on how much real estate you decide to try and go over on your tee shot... but it's strictly a guess on what club to hit. And if you guess wrong, both short and long from the tee are red staked. Hole 17 is a downhill 100 yard par 3 that almost looks like they only planned 8 holes on the back and had to fit one in. They have improved this hole by adding a mound on the left edge of the green to save almost any ball rolling toward the left side of the green from rolling down a hill, across the cart path and into the rough 20 yards below the green like it used to. Hole 18 is an S shaped par 4 with red down both sides and a lake in front of the green. Play it safe off the tee and it's a 3 shot par 4, but it's a small target area for a driver hitting over the right lateral hazard. However, with the above said... I am liking the layout more each time I play it, there are many good golf holes on this course as well. Several of the par 5's are potentially reachable for longer hitters, creating good risk/reward possibilities and there were several really good, challenging par 4's and par 3's. Several holes have nice, decorative and well placed water features that really come into play, and the front 9 in particular has several holes with spectacular views. Many holes have elevation changes, most holes either play straight up or straight down hill here. The tees were only OK, but that is better than the other times I have played here. Both the fairways and rough were decent, mostly thin, occasionally lush with no noticeable bare spots. Very playable. I was in 2 traps total. They looked alot better than they played, I bottomed out my SW in the middle of a par 5 greenside trap. Need more sand! The poa annua greens are the nicest overall of any I have putted on recently. They putted very well, medium fast and firm. They held shots OK, more roll than I would expect normally because they are quite firm. Better not be above the hole! For a course with about 1/2 the holes having drop zones, they need permanent drop areas, not just mowed down small circles in the rough. However, the drop areas were MUCH improved over the last time I played here. The customer service was excellent, they checked me in, matched me up with another single and we were on the 1st tee within 15 minutes of arriving. The drink cart came around once on the front.

Had a rare Tuesday off this week (4/7/15), so went with a friend on the GolfMoose deal to Tierra Rejada. Love this course as it was the first 'real' course I ever played when I started two years ago. Of course it ate me up back then - and still does now, but at least I shaved 16 strokes off my last visit.

As the second to last reviewer of this course said, the course rating for this place isn't high enough. Even the Greenskeeper.org CDF says 73.0, which is .7 lower than Links at Victoria - no way that Tierra Rejada from blues or behind easier than the Vic. Sure, the back 9 is no beast, but the front 9 alone makes up for that. You can be crushed emotionally on those first 9 and never recover.

As for conditions, we beat the rain (until later in the day - see next Simi Hills review) and saw fairways in good, not great condition. The rough at TR remains brutal in every sense of the word - things can go missing very fast. Tee boxes were in good shape, and the greens, while I have seem then better, were just fine. A few dry spots and signs of overuse, but nothing that won't hold a shot or putt true. Sand was more than okay.

We finished the round (after being joined by a single up until the 10th hole) in about three and a half hours, so that was nice. There was some waiting for an older group ahead of us, but they were so darn nice we didn't get too bothered. Never saw a cart girl once, but it was a Tuesday, so maybe that's not their midweek policy.

So, seeing as it was still pretty early (around 2:15pm), we decided to play another 18 at Simi Hills ...

Played here on 3/30/15 for $40 with a cart. Got a great deal on Golf Moose from GK website for our foursome. With many courses punching their greens and tee boxes this time of year I searched on GK to find ones that were not. Course is in great shape not perfect but well worth the money. My foursome finished in 4 hours and enjoyed every minute of our round. This area has so many great golf courses to play and we will be back soon.

Hadn't played here in a while and with all other tee sheets backed up thought I would give it a go, Sunday prime-time. Glad I did - course conditions generally very good and layout is certainly unique. Tee boxes, fairway and rough in good to above average condition 8/10. Sand I was in only once and it was wet and heavy but well-groomed and full 9/10. Practice green was slick but on the course pretty slow, even on down-hillers. Smooth though, so the roll was true 8.5/10. Overall solid 8-9 rating.

Course layout is a study in contradictions. Front nine is Lost-Canyons-esque, Champions-Club-like with sprinkles of Glen Ivy #18 with lots of forced carries, crazy elevation changes (yes, I'm talking about you 4, 8 & 9 - 8 plays over 100 ft down from tee to fairway, for instance) and weird sight lines where you have a hard time picking a spot to shoot for off the tee or figuring out how much distance there is till disaster. Greens are also distinctly sectioned up so if you miss the right spot then three-putting lurks. That said, a lot of greens are surrounded by mounding so you can often play bank shots that work out well. On the approach, it's one of those places where you don't need to go pin-seeking to get it close.

Now for the contradiction - the back nine. Most of it plays pretty conventionally across the flatter portions of the property near the entrance (exception being 10, 11 and 18). They try to trick it up with mounding around the fairways and other stuff but this user finds this stretch to be muni-like and bears no resemblance to the toothy front half. Just my opinion.

All in all though, your friends at the USGA are yanking your crank with the course rating here from blues or blacks. I am sure it must just be an honest typo with the second decimal on the stroke. Make no mistake - this is a stout test of golf.

What a treat to see Johnny GK out there to support us and hand out some those cool new GK shoe bags. Thank you Johnny, you are truly an ambassador for local golf in your support of both golf courses and players in this website and all you do around the game.

The course was very accommodating as usual and condition are outstanding right now. Greens rolled pure with very little imperfections. Fairways, tee boxes were lush and the rough was thick and penalizing. Fun layout with lots of variety in elevation, doglegs and distances. Great time and would play again without question. On a side note a bunch of us stayed for their buffet, it was outstanding with a carving station of Prime Rib & Turkey, salad bar, roasted veggies and loaded mashed potatoes. I think the price was $22 a head but worth every penny. Great way to end a fantastic day.

I am sure the summer heat will have an adverse effect on the conditions but it is nearly pristine right now. Enjoy!

The course was in good to great shape today. Greens were medium-fast and rolled nicely without any discernible bumpiness, although there was a lot of poa annua showing. Decent lies throughout the course, but get into the rough and you will probably have a side hill lie in deep Bermuda grass. Sand was generally poor with a thin layer over hard pan. It was $65 to ride (does anybody walk this course?) and I paid the cart girl $15 plus $2 tip for 3 beers. I probably could have bought the special: 6 domestic for $18, but what the heck, right? Pace of play was a little over 5 hours, but maybe our event format had something to do with that.

I played Tierra Rejada with some friends, first time in quite a long time (8 years??) I seemed to remember that it was a tough, shotmakers course, that is narrow in spots. My opinion changed a bit for whatever reason.
The first thing that I noticed was that the location was a perfect setting for a golf course, with surrounding rolling hills and lots of shades of green that you don't always see with LA courses. The pro shop and snack bar / bar was modern looking and in great shape.

I might normally go through each area of the course (tee boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers etc) but in reality, everything was really in great shape, I rated everything 8 out of 10 or better. It was really hard to find a weakness at Tierra Rejada, just a great course.
It was a bit challenging, but we played from the middle tees, so maybe the last time I played was from the tips. They have 'family' tees also, so you can choose the level of difficulty.
Just a little bit hilly for my tastes, but I'm a big guy, so I don't like walking up and down hills too much!! I would recommend this course to anyone, I think that the weekday price point of about $75 is about right for this course.
