Had the chance to join JohnnyGK and Jeroethel for a Meet and Play at Wolf Creek Golf Club on 5/7/13. First let me say that if you have never played here take your camera and be get ready to take lots of photos because this course is truly breath taking.
Upon arrival you will find the staff here is quite attentive to what ever you may need, they jump to your car and unload your bags and direct you to exactly where you need to go for check in, with a smile and pleasant attitude. Now lets talk about the course and practice areas.

The Driving range here is rather small and only provides players with what can be described as a true warm up only. The range does not permit fairway woods or drivers due to its length. It is long enough however to hit your long irons, and presents well marked targets from hitting stalls that contain plenty of good grass. The range also consists of a large bunker complex that is deep with prefect sand, with a nice 4 hole target green. I would recommend that you spend some time in the bunker here to sharpen your sand game as many of the course bunkers present deep high face shots that you will have to recover from. The practice greens are in excellent condition and will give you a great read on what to expect on the course. Now lets talk about about the course.

The fairways are very lush and present terrific lies with only a few being very tight. The 90 degree rule comes into play only on a few holes plus the usual par 3's. Fairways here are set down into the bottom of Sandstone Hills with tees that are raised and commonly found on the top of vistas giving the player wonderful looks of the property and surrounding hills and mountains. There are a few carries over desert land that is considered Environmental area off limits to retrieving wayward shots so bring an extra sleeve or two with you. Also many of the tees have several climbs with steps to reach you hitting area so be prepared for some walking.
The greens here are mostly raised several feet above the fairway and provide you with some of the most dramatic choices you will ever encounter on a course. Club selection here is very important when hitting your scoring irons, long can lead to very difficult putts and short off the green can lead to very delicate chips. Once on the green you will find that they offer great scoring chances and hold shots better than average. They run true and are quite smooth, with few to no ball marks other than the usual few you may find from golfers who do not take the time to fix their own, but again these are few and wide spread. I thought the greens on the front nine ran about a 9, but on the back they seem to slow to maybe 8-8.5, I chalk this up to growth later in the day, as we started the back nine in mid afternoon, but the difference in speed was quite evident.
You will not find much rough here as the Sand Stone hills run down to the cart paths, however there is enough rough through out the course that if you find it, your club selection will be crucial to recover. It is not long by any means maybe 1-3 inches but thick and normally into your club face, so check your ball carefully and make a decision from what you see, do not make my mistake and hit your normal club if you have any doubts.
As mentioned early, the bunkers here are deep with high steep faces. The sand is White and Fluffy and is very fair for recovery, with a thickness of 4-5 inches in most cases. There are a few green side and fairway bunkers that have yet to be redone and these are easily spotted by there brown texture.
This is a terrific course and a most play for any golfer who enjoys perfect conditions. I would recommend this course in the highest way. Also a special thanks to JohnnyGK for setting this Meet and Play up and Joel the course General Manager.

Played 5/8/13 with Johnny GK and Jerry64. Ask Johnny GK about his par three shot that was heading for the hole until it hit the Repair Ball Marks sign! Wolf Creek is an amazing course. Very challenging. Even from the Whites, the slope is 134 and well deserved. Wolf Creek is located on the North end of Mesquite up next to the airport. This is a very hilly area and the course is carved out of the hills. There are really no flat holes. Many of the tees are elevated relative to the landing areas -- bring your camera as the views are fantastic. Also many of the greens are elevated, so it can be tough getting the right club to carry up to the green from the fairway. The greens were all redone last November. They are in really good shape, minimal ball marks, but a little on the slow side. We were told they were 9-9.5, but the back nine seemed about a foot slower than the front nine. You have to pay attention to the hills near the green which will show you if you are putting up hill or down hill. Bunkers have white sand and are good to play from. Water is used as an aesthetic feature on many holes, but really only comes into play on a couple holes. Pay attention to where the creek (as in Wolf Creek) cuts across the fairways. But again the creek is not a major problem. Fairways are tight but have lots of grass. No bad lies. Not much rough -- instead the sandstone hills come right down to the edge of the cart paths. Tees are all flat and generally in good shape with some divots. Except for a couple holes, carts are allowed in the fairways which is good because you really need to be next to your ball for club selection. No GPS -- so bring your own. It's always one club more uphill and one club less downhill than you think. COUPLE IMPORTANT NOTES: Sandstone areas off the fairway are environmental protection areas which you not allowed to enter to look for your ball. Bring an extra sleeve. Also, many tees have steps to get from the cart path to the tee box. If you have a physical handicap or are out of shape, be ready for more walking and climbing than the average course. Also, limited practice facility (no woods on driving range). Summary: Best course in Mesquite. If you have a group and are looking for a great course to have a tournament, Wolf Creek is the place. The bar area is quite large, there are lots of tables in the restaurant area and there is an outside patio that overlooks the first fairway. Joel the pro was most kind to spend some time with us after our round and he talked about the challenge of maintaining a course in such a hilly venue. Played on 2/22/13 Monday. We teed off 12:20PM. When we parked our car, attendant came with golf cart and loaded us up promptly. Driving range only has 7 slots only so use your time wisely. After some delay due to starter not present during the shift change, we got to tee off. We had to quite a bit here and there for the front 9 but the 4 some in front of us ended up flipping their cart on 11th hole so they had to quit. One guy had pretty severe damage to his knee so they took him to the hospital. We heard their cart tires squealing multiple times on the front 9 so they must took it to the next level on 11th (They were elderly gentlemen in 50's to 60's) I hope he is ok. After 15 minute delay of flipping the cart back and driving it off to the side, it was smooth sailing for us after that.

Tee boxes are in good shape with only minor dead spots upon closer inspection. Fairways were also in great shape with only minor brown spots appearing sporadically. Rough was in lush and in full bloom. Luckily, I was in the rough only couple times so didn't effect me any at all. I only saw 1 bunker that was still in process of repair and all the rest was filled with pristine white sand with heavy texture. Greens have recovered quite a bit since last time I was here in November. First 2 greens are still less than average but most of the other ones are adequate. It is still in shaggy mode so not as good as I would like the green to be but its getting there. Luckily, it did look like it has been rolled so speed was faster than it looked. It was bumpy but not a big concern.

I could clearly see the improvement over past couple months and I hope next couple month's grass growing season will return the course back to its past glories. I always enjoy the layout of the course and its views. Its still not there yet but its in plenty good shape if you've been waiting to play this course.

I hope I have enough time on my next visit to play here again.

Just played Wolf Creek last Sat. Fairways in great shape, new white sand in bunkers on front 9 only, back 9 has same old lumpy dirt sand that used to be on both 9s, new greens very shaggy, slow, a bit bumpy, like you're putting on carpet.

I just gave myself gimmes inside 10 feet, except for birdie putts. Golf experience is as spectacular as always. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to make the drive up every time I come to Vegas, but I met a 4-some from Indiana who do the same thing. It's totally worth it.

As a bonus, the pro gives every player a $25 gift certificate for use in golf shop or restaurant to offset the slow greens. Classy move.

As an aside, I was paired with 3 twenty-four-year-olds who insisted on playing from the tips, even though it was their 1st time. They took some aggressive flight lines off the tee, some of which I never would've considered. From the #2 tee box with the wind at our backs, maybe the highest spot on course, we did just that and 3 out of 4 of us found the fairway within 100 yds from the green. That translated to 300+ carry! Scorecard said #2 measured 445yds. Now that was fun! (BTW, I can't fly my driver more that 250yds under normal conditions)

Great course, great weather and definitely one of my favorite. Wolf Creek’s layout was stunning and the views from every tee box were beautiful. But looks can be deceiving. While I enjoyed the views and layout of the course, I didn't enjoy too much loosing so many golf balls. I couldn't believe how many golf balls I lost on this beautiful golf course. If you’re not straight off the tee, you might want to make sure you bring plenty of golf balls. Wolf Creek demands accuracy off the tee box because of the elevation drop and canyons between them. You definitely need a sky caddy or a laser to give you accurate distance. Although the fairways were wide enough, my golf balls still ended up between the canyons. It’s definitely a fantasy type golf course and it was fun to have this type of challenge.

Wolf Creek is definitely a course you need to try at least once if you love playing golf. Looking forward to playing Wolf Creek again.

Wolf Creek Golf Club is my favorite course. Simply because it’s layout is stunning and beautiful. In addition the course typically is in fantastic condition which I’m confident come spring it will be. Currently I would consider the course to be in great shape. The damage to the turf caused by the water main irrigation leak-failure over summer is all but gone. Overall the annual rye grass overseeding came in beautifully (See Photos I Posted). The greens do need more time to fill in. They were completely reseeded with new bent grass during the course overseeding in October. As a result they were slow and shaggy when I played last week. The greens condition did degrade my Wolf Creek experience but not the point where I would have second guessed playing the course.

I had the pleasure of playing the front nine with GK’ers xazntigerx, Jack16 and 240Clutch and then the back nine with rob1563, pl8_raddy and his fiance Linda. The weather was perfect. Wolf Creek’s service was excellent and the food in the clubhouse was delicious. I feel the GK’ers I played with did an exceptional job writing reviews and rather than reiterate what they said I’d prefer to defer the rest of my review to theirs. Looking very forward to playing Wolf Creek again...hopefully this spring.

Played on Monday 11/5 with fantastic weather. With a 7:40 tee time, I left Vegas around 5 and pulled into the lot a little after 6, beating the cart guys in. Pro shop was great, letting me know the greens were running slow due to them being totally replaced during reseeding. Cart guys came and dropped a cart off as I got the clubs out of the car. Entire staff was extra friendly and talkative.

Fairways were in good condition and recovered nicely from the damage they had this summer. Very few thin spots or divot damage, and they were firm with good roll. A handful of holes were cart path only, and it was quite a hike if you were opposite of them. The rough was about 2 to 3 inches and the ball sat up well in it. There is different sand in the front 9 bunkers compared to the back 9. White, fluffy beach like sand that was great to hit out of on the front. The back bunkers had hard packed desert like sand, good for the fairways, not good around the green. Greens were as slow or slower than expected, but typical for a course coming out of reseeding. Greens were soft, and held shots that I usually bounce through.

Overall, Wolf Creek is definitely a course you need to try at least once, and bring a camera with extra batteries. Every tee box makes you say "wow," and offers incredible views. Only 1 semi blind tee shot (Par 3 #3 with only half the flag visible) and many tee shots that look like they fly for miles (I wanted to shout "fore" on a shot that landed 150 yards short of the group). Only change from my last visit is now the yardage book is $5, instead of free, but absolutely worth it.

With all the recent low score reviews, I knew I had to tone down my expectations this time around. Their driving range is IRON only and there is only enough for 6 to 7 players at one time so plan accordingly. If you're not a long hitter, you can hit driver and still be ok. I think anything longer than 220 yds carry can get through the netting to other side. They have a practice putting green just above the driving range. Normal putting green was closed for repair.

From the first tee box, I could only see very minor condition issues so I was very relieved. Fairways weren't pristine like the last time I played here during same time last year but it was in good shape and did not effect the playing. Sure there were some minor bare spots here and there but I don't know too many course that doesn't have occasional bare spots. Bunkers on the first hole were in immaculate shape with white sand. I noticed the main issue when we all got to the first green to make our putts. In year's past, there was no way possible that my ball would have stayed above the hole on an inclined slope. I had a severe down hill putt that you would normally just tap it but on this day, I actually putted it and it still did not get to the hole. Strategy of the day was to have a down hill putt rather than uphill putt because there was no way you were going to putt it to the hole without conscious effort of "whacking it". It was like putting on fringe. Only other green this shaggy was number 9 putting green and rest of the greens were adequate. It was slow but puttable. Its going to take some time for complete repair but there weren't any major bare spots so it shouldn't be a long process. Some of the later holes when I hit into the bunkers, it was bare. There were hardly any sand in the bunker because they were in process of refilling them. So depending on which bunker you land in, you may have pristine white sand or hard concrete like bare bottom.

There were only mild breezes so course was fairly benign. Layout at Wolf Creek is unlike any other in U.S. Hitting tee shots with canyons in between them is an experience that every golfer should try at least once. Just make sure you're golfing with balls that you don't mind losing since you will lose a few as some of my playing partners found out quickly. Every hole was picturesque as I remember from my last year's trip here and even though experience could have been better with the pristine greens, it still was worth driving up 1 hr to play here.

Post round, they gave us a small survey which came with buy 1 get 1 free draught or soft drink. Restaurant is called Terrace and they have good variety of food that are tasty. Its always good choice to hang out grabbing some light food and enjoy the sunset at one of the most beautiful golf course in the world.

Bottom line, this course is worth playing as long as they have grass. It is by far one of the most intriguing layout in the world. In the best condition, its a course you dream about for months before your trip. In current condition, its still worth the drive but you may not want to do replays. I'll be checking back next year to see how all the improvement has turned out.

I played this course on Monday 11/05/12. I learned about this course from playing it on Tiger Woods Pga Tour for the wii and ps3. This is my first time playing this course in real life, but thankfully for the video game I had a sense of what I was up against. It was surreal being there to see the course layout in real life and it did not disappoint. From the first tee box, it started off with a big elevation drop overseeing the whole par 5 layout. This is a nice way to start out a round at a difficult course, gives room to recover from the first shot of the day lol. My preference for a golf course is more towards the layout, challenge and scenery it delivers...So with that in mind, that is were this review will be based on.

Layout wise the course can be a workout for some, you find yourself catching your breath after you park the cart and then find your way up to the elevated tees and greens. Its a small hike on some of the holes, but its fun, I don't mind the work out, its part of the experience. I just soaked in the moment and looked around being able to see a lot of the course after climbing up to the second tee box. It over looked much of the course and reveals to you what awaits you. An amazing view of the layout, a picture hole on every single one. I felt like an explorer climbing the rock stairs until i reached the top of the tee box on the second hole to look down at the whole course as if I just reached the top of the world. The 150 markers were clear to see from the tee boxes, they were made from a block of rock with the wolf creek logo on them, but it was good to have visible markers, one of the earlier courses our group played didn't have markers and it was something that I appreciated having on the course.

Challenge wise the course demands accuracy off the tee box. You have to adjust properly for the elevation drops, so some of the holes it was just a guess and hope if you had enough carry to reach the fairway. Its a fantasy type of course and it was fun to have this type of challenge. The greens today were soft, looked like they didn't cut them down, so the result was the greens rolls really slow today. Not a big deal, had they been fast, we would of probably had a frustrating time lag putting from certain high points on the greens. My playing partners had played this course before so they shared their stories of how fast the greens were for them when they last played, so I could imaging seeing the breaks in the greens how difficult it could have been, which would provide a very challenging time on the greens on top of an already challenging course. Soft greens was a little blessing then. 

There were plenty of scenic views; from almost all the tee boxes you were able to oversee the complete layouts of a lot of the previously played and upcoming holes. From the the low valleys you were presented with elevated greens that demanded you grab a club or more extra to getter on. The waters that surrounded the holes were clear and had some ducks hanging out in them. The bunkers had soft sand filled in them and i had a couple of lies on the side of the bunkers that i had to play out of. I remember the the waterfall on the 18th hole right next to the cart path. Thought this was a nice placement to end the round with something to remember.

After our round the staff presented us with a coupon for the bar, buy one get one free drink. I went to their pro shop and found a jacket that I bought then we went to the bar and used our drink coupons. The bar was quiet this day, probably because it was a Monday, but it was clean and one bartender was there to help us out. 

Their range was out front when you first enter, and it isn't long enough for a driver, so its irons only. We used it to warm up prior to our round. I noticed they had Nike practice range balls, but unfortunately they didn't carry or maybe they were out of stock of any Nike 20xi-x golf balls that I wanted to buy in their pro shop. I ran out of these golf balls as this was the 6th round of golf we played in our four day long golf vacation trip and I needed to restock my golf bag with them.
