I travel to many states and play golf three times a week. The only reason I played this course was because Troon had their name on it. After 40 years of playing this game, this was the worst course I ever played. It was so neglected, it was hard to believe it was even open. 18 out of 18 greens were destroyed. It was embarrassing for the club to present this course to the public and worse yet they had the audacity to charge people to play it.

Happy New Year to all the GK’ers! Have played The Foothills about 7 times in the past 2 weeks, starting December 19th. 2023, last round was January 1st, 2024. The course was bought last year or perhaps late 2022 and is now managed by Troon. The course is in pretty good shape in comparison to what it has been like in previous years. Greens are decent to good, fairways generally good, rough is mostly lush. Major improvements on the practice range. Downsides: Tee boxes are not level at all, on some you can’t find a level spot within one or two club lengths of the markers, secondly is the very poor condition of the bunkers, most have virtually no sand at all……I guess that makes them consistent!!! It is a very good layout/design. Current green fees are good value. The course is going to close in the summer to allow for a rebuild of all of the tee boxes, and hopefully refurbishing the bunkers. Rumour is some of the greens will be redone as well but couldn’t get confirmation of that. Pace of play was good, we teed off no later than 0940 on any day and were first out twice ( finished those round in 2 1/2 hrs.). Bev cart was around. Hopefully the refurbishment of the course brings it back to its former very high status.

Played December 23rd with a 0926 tee time. POP just under 4 hours!! and we had to wait on the last 4 holes. The course is in the best shape I have seen it in a long time, although I haven't played since pre pandemic due to travel restrictions. Course was sold to new owners who took over November 7th, and will be a Troon managed facility effective January 1st. Troon is excellent management company so I would expect a couple of improvements, but also certainly expect the prices to increase as well. We paid the rack rate of $79 (plus tx) so will likely go up to close to $100 after Jan. 1 The greens were fully grown in, and played fairly fast, no "pock" marks -looks like most folks repaired ball marks!! There are still some bare spots on some greens but not many, and tend to be on the fringes of the greens. Fairways were mostly good and lush, however there are still some areas that have historically been "bare" - #17 for example. Rough was dormant grass but was full, with a few bare spots. Desert does come into play on most holes, although for the most part the fairways are wide enough. Tee boxes were good. UPDATE; we played again on Dec. 25 from different tee boxes. These ones were not level, plenty of divots, and really bare where the blocks were!! We decided we would find grass in level areas and play from there....too bad. I have always liked the layout of Foothills but they have always had issues with water. Hopefully now that has been resolved. Be interesting to see how it goes with Troon. played here on 11/11 thursday on my way out of town and back to san diego..rode the golds at 848am on a 65 degree morning that in 41/2 hours later would be 82 degrees...saw this course on golf now for $90 so called the course and got the same tee time for $65(+$9 for tax=74)just came out of overseeding beautiful green grass framed by golden Bermuda rough.. they let you drive the cart on the cart path side rough (saved me about 20 steps)very challenging course bunkers were really place well in the fairway to make you consider driver or 3wood off the tee.by the way bermuda rough sucks! the greens were good but seemed a slower than the practice green(nice warm up area by the way)overall this course was a very good deal.. challenging/scenic/great price... the only 3 negatives, the bunkers were horrible with 2 inch size rocks and red hard dirt(but help is on the way because saw about 5 greenside bunkers that had a fine white sand and more of that sand piled in the maintenance area). over half the gold tee boxes were chewed up and not very flat and our threesome was sandwiched between a slow ball losing 4some and a aggressive hitting into you 4some but the marshall took care of the slow 4some and a couple of turn around stare downs took care of the other...recommend for a very challenging not super expensive round in south phoenix

I played Foothills on New Year's Day 2020, around 10:50am on a teeoff.com deal time for around $45 after promo code and tax. Paired with three other randoms on the same deal. POP was about 3.5 hours, the course was not busy at all, didn't really catch anyone until the last few holes. Carts were fairly new, course does appear walkable but with maybe 2 longer green-tee hikes, and I did see a twosome walking. This course and its "sister course" nearby, Ahwatukee CC, have a bit of a local reputation for being scruffy and water-starved under their current owner, who also owned the two other courses in Ahwatukee that closed down in the past few years (Club West and Ahwatukee Lakes). The tees, fairways, and greens were actually in pretty good condition. One member of the group said he plays the course often, and it is in the best shape he's seen it in after some serious conditioning problems in the past few years. The cart attendant had also mentioned they basically lost the greens last summer. They seem to have made a nice comeback. That being said, everything more than 15 yards off the fairways just looks awful and scruffy, even the retaining walls bordering the homes on the course all have peeling/missing paint, are falling apart, lots of weeds, etc. The dormant rough also does not extend very far out from the fairway on most holes and turns into sandy/weedy areas. These off-fairway conditions don't bother me much, but I know they do turn off some people, especially if paying winter rack rate of $70+. The greens were deceptively fast, and rolled smoother than their appearance would have suggested. One thing I did like about the conditioning is that they left the dormant rough cut fairly high around the greens, so one could easily get under the ball and hit high lofted pitches; most local courses shave these down (or they get matted down from traffic) and are like hitting off a sidewalk. I'd play it again when in the area but probably would not make a special trip from my home 40 minutes away.

Played again Friday, St. Paddy's day, 1 pm tee time ($35), very hot day. The course was in good shape, and it appears as of they have sorted out the previous water issues, and whatever other issues they have had in the past several years. Tee boxes were good, fairways and greens were the best I have seen them in years. Playing in the afternoon as we did, the greens were starting to dry out a bit, and although the stimp rating said only running at 9.5 they were running faster than that. As I always say, I really like the layout/design and hopefully they can maintain the course in good shape!

My wife and I played Foothills on 11-2-16. We had an 8:56 tee time and were able to start a few minutes early. The course was playing with cart paths only due to recent over seeding. We were paired with a local couple that were able to give us some course knowledge. The course is generally wide open off the tee but has some hidden trouble closer to the greens. The course was in very good condition. The tee boxes were lush and generally flat. The fairways and rough were very lush and had few divots or bare spots. The greens were medium/slow but were very true putting. The breaks on the greens were clearly visible which made reading putts fairly easy. My only concern with the course condition was the bunkers. They were very firm with a thin layer of sand on top. The staff was friendly and helpful. Even with the cart paths only we were able to complete our round in under 4 1/4 hours. This course was well worth the $28.00 per player rate on TeeOff.com

Another early cool morning. teed off at 735. GN rate $39. This is a very good layout/design no real dumb holes here. The conditions of the course have, over the past 4-5 years, been "hit n miss" and a couple of years ago the grass was dead, greens were horrible and no sand in bunkers. A recent reviewer said the greens were awful, I can report that they are growing back in, and are now actually "green". Greens on the front were still pretty thin in spots, and still had some bare spots. Greens on the back side were in better condition. They weren't as fast as other courses I've played in the past week and a tip for putting there is remember where South Mountain is, as they break away from the mountain. Fairways were thin, and there were bare spots throughout. The sand was very good, lots of sand in the bunkers and were consistent throughout. T boxes were ok. As mentioned the conditions were ok. We were done in 3 hours. Customer service was good. Don"t think the coffee shop/restaurant is open until 9. I really hope they keep working on the course maintenance, as it is a good layout.
