Played the Blues (6669/70.5/127) in 4H, 45M Sunday morning. Wanted a cheap, warm-up round for my rematch with Arizona National relatively closeby, and this was a good fit in both regards. The slight breeze was welcome as the temps were over 90 by the time we were finishing up. Was paired with a very nice adult father/son for 9 holes. The senior 4some in front of us was so slow that the 2some behind us joined to make our group a 5some on the back... and we still waited every hole. No recent reviews of this course, so I researched online. Saw the course opened in 1961 and saw "Country Club" in the title. Then read that Forty Niner had hosted two PGA Tucson Opens and 2 LPGA GAC Classics back in the day. Don January and Judy Rankin won titles there. So perhaps my expectations were higher than they should have been. What I encountered was an okay course, but certainty nothing special. Straight forward, traditional, tight, tree lined desert layout that would remind you of many older Palm Springs courses. Almost every hole ringed by older, middle class homes with OB down both sides. The humpbacked greens all sloped from back to front with no tiers or mounds to create extra break other than falling off to both sides. The playing conditions were playable, but nothing was really above average. The customer service was good from everyone encountered. The tees and fairways had good coverage, were decently maintained and were mowed close. More thin than lush. The rough was, well rough... mowed low but still tough to play from because the coverage was spotty with grass, weeds, hardpan etc. The sand traps were at best average. The greens rolled okay at medium speed and were firm. However, they were what I would call thin. No bare spots, but the grass coverage was not lush. Recommended only as a budget alternative, there are far definitely options available close by.

Played on May 18th 2014 and some fairways were already punched. Greens getting punched and sanded May 19 and 20. The maintenance alerts for this course still show green and should not. The fairways were grass in some spots, and hitting off dirt or dead grass in many spots. It looked like they had not watered the fairways in a few days. The greens were cut very short before the coming aerification and on some holes it was ridiculously hard to hole the ball because the cup was cut on a hill so the ball would just trickle down forever. Very frustrating. The price was low so that was a plus.

We played this "Dog track" today. That was being nice. Please don't waste your money playing this course until at least later this spring. Very brown fairways most likely from not watering. Bunker... Continue »

We played this "Dog track" today. That was being nice. Please don't waste your money playing this course until at least later this spring. Very brown fairways most likely from not watering. Bunkers are some of the worst in the city. Weeds around the greens. For some reason the are growing the aprons to about 2 inchs and the grass behind it was dead and brown. The one good thing I can say is that the cart lady was a hoot! Very nice personallity and really took good care of us. We paid $35 on golfnow and got free lunch. They should have paid us!

Avoid this course at all costs now! I have no idea when the last time they watered the fairways was . . I would guess months! Most of the fairways are bare dirt with some weeds mixed in . . an occasional patch of grass. The tee boxes are almost nearly all bare dirt, I broke a couple of tees trying to get them into the rock-hard dirt. The traps are virtually without sand and the greens are bumpy and pretty torn up. There are rumors flying about that this course is headed toward bankruptcy . . don't know the validity of those rumors, but it has certainly been neglected. It's sad because this has always been one of my favorite "close to the house" courses, but it has fallen into a terrible state of disrepair and neglect. There are inexpensive greens fees to be had online . . even they are way too much to pay to play this course now.

Played Sunday morning (5/17/09) as a 3-some. I like the layout of this course. Sort of old school with a lot of very mature trees lining the fairways. The back 9 has a lot of holes with dogleg left layouts . . everything bends left on the back 9. This was probably the worst condition I've ever seen the course in. Normally the fairways are very nice and lush but I found myself hitting off dirt a lot today which is somewhat annoying if you've actually split the fairway and now find yourself hitting off a lie that's worse than the short rough! The ongoing problem with this course is pace of play. No ranger to keep things moving. We were behind a 4-some and waited every shot/every hole until the 13th when they let us finally play through. The group ahead of them was 3 holes ahead! The price is generally right on this course, and the customer service is always very good. They need some water and a ranger!

Got the $30 Tee Time from EZLinks Specials the night prior. Most likely $30 due to the 1230 tee time. The course was busy for a Wednesday. This is an old course but it's still a challange with OB on both sides of each hole. You gotta drive it straight to avoid tall trees, houses, and the dreaded white stakes. Water threatens only the 10th and 18th, both par 3s. The greens look fast but they were slow this day. Worth the price if you don't mind the drive to East Tucson.

Beautiful course! I have been in Tucson for few years now and never played this course until yesterday. I noticed three features of this course that set itself apart from other Tucson courses. First, this one is NOT a desert course (which I’m not a big fan of). Second, a lot of trees, and for some holes, the trees are making the fairway even narrower, so you really need put the ball right in the middle. Third, many dog-left holes, nearly half of holes are very or somewhat dog-left.
Being this time of the year, the fallen leaves covered up the rough makes ball finding effort much harder, but also adding a lot of foliage color to the course, which makes the course beautiful in my opinion.
