Played a couple of rounds at The Quail the last couple of days. First yesterday afternoon with DeepSea14 and then this morning with SDF. Quail always has great conditions and is known for the best fairways in the business. These last couple of days were no exception.

Even the grass on the driving range is perfect. Speaking of the driving range, it’s nice that the range is right next to the clubhouse, starter, parking lot and first tee. No driving for 5 minutes to get to the range and then rushing back to the first tee. It’s all right there. Having said that, the range does frequently limit you to 200 yard shots. This go around it maxed out at 250 so that was nice.

Greens rolled smooth at a fast pace. Not wicked fast put definitely faster than the standard medium-fast that most roll at. Greens have just the right amount of undulations and breaks to keep things interesting yet not be ludicrous. I only encountered a couple of un-repaired pitch marks throughout the two days of play.

Fairways are just pure bliss at Quail. Rarely will you find better fairways anywhere. The rough was perfect. Deep and thick enough to stop rollout during an off line drive but still plush enough to be able to get a clean shot. All courses should use the rough a Quail as their standard. It would rob you of serious yardage if you hit it during your drive but you still had a good lie to hit your approach shot.

Tee boxes were level with great coverage and divot free. Sand traps were ok and very playable but nothing to brag about. The best way to describe the bunkers is that if you encountered them on a muni course you’d be happy but on a high end course you’re disappointed. Staff is always friendly at Quail (minus one encounter at the end of yesterdays round).

Weather was just shy of “it sucked”, honestly these last two days were the coldest days I’ve ever spent at Quail. Even the car event in October that started at 6am wasn’t as cold as it was today! But that won’t stop me from going back.

Course is in perfect shape. Everything is green and lush. Great layout. Challenging rough. Well placed, fantastic fairway bunkering. Love this place.

My turn to treat and mixed it up this go around and played Quail Lodge on Thursday 2/16. It’s always so fun to play here with great course conditions and friendly staff. This go around was no exception. Whereas the fairways weren’t in their beyond a 10, usual condition, they were still very very nice. My buddy kept commenting on how nice the fairways were. Fairways definitely had nice lush coverage and a perfect emerald green color throughout. A few of the fairways were a bit soft and didn’t offer much roll out but overall nothing to huff about.

Greens rolled super smooth (I had 6 one putts) at a nice fast pace but not wicked fast. The nice part was they rolled at the same speed in all directions. Very predictable. Like many courses right now, the greens were a tad on the firm side but still acceptable. The collar around the greens on the other hand were super soft. Land there and it was pretty much a guaranteed plug or one foot roll out.

Tee boxes were all level with good coverage throughout. I was in A LOT of sand traps, so I got a thorough testing of the bunkers. Most traps had high quality soft fluffy sand. Only one or two were a little thin.

There was a frost delay so POP was a little backed up and we waited on all shots but still finished in around 4-4:15 hrs. Customer service is excellent. One of bag drop kids is super friendly and helpful (the other is a bit lost) and the starter and pro shop attendees are also very friendly. My main complaint is they didn’t have a shirt in my size (nor did they seem to care, but oh well).

I also stayed at the hotel. Rooms are fabulous and the setting is a very quaint relaxed vibe. There’s a fun 9 hole putting green around the resort. Food at the “new” Covey restaurant was average at best. Dessert on the other hand was Excellent.

The hotel and course are both highly recommended

Up at Quail Lodge & Golf Club for my annual trip to Monterey Monday 11/14. Really fun day with GKers, rgm2525, alex326 and deepsea14. Golf course was immaculate as expected. Even better shape than last year. Greens were pure. Running medium fast, very smooth and holding shots. Fairways were like carpet with only a few blemishes. The primary rough was paona turf as are the greens, tees and fairways. It was cut 2-3 inches but the secondary rough, the nasty dense fescue lining the bunkers and hazards was up to foot deep and very penalizing. As challenging as the bunkers are to play from you are much better being in the sand than on the edges of those traps. The bunkers, perfect, excellent sand, well groomed and beautiful. The bunkers are the center piece of Quail Lodge & Golf Club’s design. Take a look at the photos I posted and you will soon see. Tee boxes in excellent shape, level, lush and groomed.

Service was fantastic all day. Friendly and professional.

We did not have an opportunity to eat at Edgars but from all past experiences it’s superb.

Anytime you see a Play and Stay deal to experience Quail Lodge & Golf Club its worth considering. If you’re in town for a few rounds, put Quail Lodge on your list.

Played 11-14-22 with some fellow GKers, teeing off a little before noon and finishing in under 4 hours with no waiting and no one behind us. Tee boxes were in very nice shape, level and green with good coverage. Fairways were in great shape, good lies, decent roll out with your ball sitting up for approach shots. Rough was about 2 inches, uniformly cut and in great condition. Was in two greenside bunkers that had an ample amount of nice white sand that was well groomed. Greens were some of the best I've played on all year, rolling smooth at a medium/fast pace and playing semi-soft. Overall really good conditions on this fun course.

Pleasant weather for a mid-day game in Carmel. Great service from the bag drop to the locker room. They hit the all the marks of what you'd expect.
The best overall experience I've had playing in 2022 to date.
The greens are in impeccable shape and a 9.75/10 rating. I'd say hard to find better putting surfaces in the Monterey valley with public access.
Fairways like carpet and let my low stinger drives get some needed roll out.
Today with a short frost delay they started play on hole 14, which made it different routing. I liked that too.

Joined the other GK’ers at Quail yesterday for a super fun round in the peninsula. Quail Lodge is part hotel resort and part country club. They do a great job at appeasing both sets of clients by keeping the pro shop and restaurant (now café) away from the main hotel. Edgars restaurant has now (for about a year or so) moved up to the hotel. Staff all around at Quail is excellent with bag check service at the drop off and a well stocked pro shop that has not only your typical golf apparel, but also some nice customized Quail lodge gifts like wine glasses and such.

As for the course it was excellent as usual. Greens were near a 10. Easily a 9.5. They rolled super smooth at a medium -fast pace. Had I not just played Tehama the other day which has the fastest greens anywhere, I probably would have said the greens at Quail rolled at a fast pace. Most greens at Quail are manageable with just a single tier that slopes front to back. There are a few thrown in with multiple breaks to keep things challenging. The greens easily held well struck approach shots, yet didn’t have any ugly pitch marks all over the place. Even the greens on the second half of the round which was in the late afternoon, still rolled very smooth.

Fairways had great coverage throughout and were lush. Some of the fairways had a light dusting of sand on them that was more noticeable when your tee shot landed than when standing over your ball preparing to hit your approach shot. Whereas the fairways this time around weren’t over the top excellent (I’ve seen them where a 10 isn’t a high enough rating), they were still above average and a 9.

I wasn’t in any bunkers but they looked like they had ample sand from the other players. Tee boxes were level will good coverage. POP was slow because of a Twosome (in our group) that kept holding us up! Even though we were the slow group out there, we only let a single then a twosome through. The rest of the course was quiet and had that country club feeling.

It's been a couple of years since I’ve stayed at the hotel, but it is worth doing a stay and play as the hotel is great and the golf course is excellent. Quail is also dog friendly and usually in the sun when other courses are fogged in.

Highly recommend it.

What a great surprise. First time to add this course to the Pebble Beach golf trip, and it will stay in the rotation for future trips. From the impression I had coming in, I expected great conditions, but more of a resort layout. Pictures don't do it justice. This course is awesome. Holes are each unique and different. The most difficult 6400 yards I can remember playing. This is a championship caliber course. Great sites are so well framed with spectacular bunkering. Conditions superb and a true golf test. So glad to have found a new gem in the are. Just great.
