Beautiful fall day. Course had some very scenic views of mountains and fall foliage around Reno. Course is in the lower foothills with views of Mt. Rose. No real big elevation changes, but a fun routing with a few homes around but not too close.
They had just received about 7" of rain a couple days before. There were a few soggy areas around, but in overall decent shape. All of the bunkers in the front where filled completely with water. The normal sand looked very rocky. Fairways were mostly lush. Numerous bare or dead spots mixed through out all the Fairways, but rarely caused any issues. The good parts were really good. Dark green and lush with the ball sitting perfect. Many had slopes making the ball run sideways. Was told summer dryer conditions can make them tricky. Greens also had trouble spots, but mostly very good. Receptive and running at around a medium quick pace. A few big undulations, but mostly very tricky small ones that when mixed against the rolling terrain were very hard for me to read. Over all a fun course and worth a try.

Good solid test near Reno. The course is in good shape with smooth medium fast greens. Back nine seemed a little more scenic and challenging with more elevation change. Played the blue tees 6550 at a par of 72.
Little to no wind and I struggled, wish they had a set of tees between the blue and white 6068. The 69.9 Course rating seemed low to me,a lot of long holes on the back and a bunch of forced carries. Worth playing if in the area.

Played a late afternoon 9 (Back 9) here on August 24th. We got to Reno later in the day and only had time for 9 but this course was really enjoyable.

There are two things that stood out to me about this course:

1) The greens are diabolical. They don't look too severe but they were FAST, and the ball would roll all over the place. Downwind, front pin you had no chance. I absolutely love greens like this....just not the first time you play them.

2) We didn't see any marmots. Was really looking forward to that.

As for the course conditions, I thought they were really solid. There were quite a few really wet, soft spots in the fairways and I'm guessing this time of year, for that type of grass, they really need to soak them A LOT to keep them alive. But outside of those spots I had nothing but really pure lies.

As I mentioned, the greens were really fast and firm, but they rolled pretty true. I have to imagine earlier in the day they are pretty close to perfect. After a day of play and wind in the afternoon they got a little bumpy. I will say that I can't remember a course having as many unfixed, BIG ball marks as Wolf Run. My playing partner and I couldn't figure out why but my guess is that a lot of the time when you land on the green your ball would roll out 20-30 feet away (even on wedges) and maybe people couldn't figure out where they landed (?). But outside of that, great surfaces.

What I really enjoyed was the layout. We played the back and while the first couple holes are pretty basic, there's a lot of good shot values out there and I think the course was designed well to take into account the terrain, the weather and the type of turf they have. It was really a lot of fun!

We paid $30 for the 4 PM twilight rate and I think we could have finished 18 if we turned and burned. But we were practicing for a tournament the next day and just wanted to hit some shots, have a couple beers and see some marmots.

Next year when I'm up there I'll definitely try and go back. Everyone at Wolf Run was great and the setting is pretty cool. Deifnitely give it a shot when in the Reno area. I think you'd really enjoy it.

Played a mid morning four hour plus round with another single and a couple great locals Roger and Dave. The staff was perfect. The rates were very fair for what was offered! The marshals were bringing water out to the players on the course with the warmer 90 degree weather (not warm for us). The course was in excellent shape from the practice green to the 18th green. The tee boxes were all pretty level with good coverage. The rough was about 3-5" of thick and sometimes damp green grass. The fairways were excellent with not one bare or thin spot to be found. There were a couple places on a few holes that were a little soggy but manageable. The extremely large greens were running 11-12 on most holes with a few slightly slower. The only complaint involved the traps. They were all groomed nicely but the two I found were very damp, thin and muddy. This course introduced my to a mammal I'd never encountered on a course before - the Marmot. These fluffy animals made the day fun. The course also was home to numerous Quail and their babies. I really enjoyed the course and definitely recommend IT when in the Reno area.

This was the first round on Monday morning, our last day in the Tahoe area. Mainly a warm-up round before the NCGA outing at nearby Montreux. No deals for this one, though, so we payed the morning rack rate of $50. We went off first just before 6:00am. Had to play around/through/with maintenance, but they were nice and no problems getting around efficiently at our normal pace.

The course was in good condition. Very lush, green and nicely manicured. However, first thing in the morning it was sopping wet and everything was very squishy/soggy from tee to green. Hard to rate the fairways because they would be great later in the day when dried out, but in the morning they were a bit hard to play with no roll-out and wet lies to hit from. Bunkers just okay with a more coarse kind of sand that was also tougher with the wetness. The greens were a little squishy underfoot, but they still were very firm on approaches. And man, these greens were lightning fast with everything sloping away from Mt. Rose. Super quick and smooth. Was really impressed with the greens and I can only imagine how crazy they are when dried out (and in the normal afternoon Reno winds).

This turned out to be one of the more pleasant surprises of the trips. It's not on the level of the mountain resort courses in terms of layout or scenery, but it's an enjoyable and just-challenging-enough desert style course with a few forced carries, minor changes in elevation and a number of risk/reward options. Many holes have a little creek that runs across anywhere from 30-100 yards short of the green. Otherwise, fairly forgiving off the tee and around the greens.

The other thing that will stand out about Wolf Run for me is the marmot invasion. If you don't know what a marmot is (pretty sure that's what they are after extensive Google research), it's kind of like a cross between a beaver and a squirrel. Chubby and cute. Though native to the Sierras, this is the only place we saw these critters and they were everywhere on this course just eating the grass along the edges. However, they don't make holes in the ground (at least not noticeably on the course) like gophers, I didn't notice much poop and the grass did not seem to be suffering too much from their presence. I am sure the superintendent loathes them and they are probably a nuisance from a management standpoint. However, they do provide kind of a fun added wildlife element when playing the course. Clearly no major predators around here because they are fat and happy.

Rest of the course is in beautiful condition. Pay attention to water hazards. Many small creeks around greens and along faraway that are hidden. Agree with previous post about playing the right tees. Some faraway are narrow. A few times I thought I hit a fairway only to find it ran off into the fairway.
I will come back.

Played Wolf Run for the first time on Aug. 12. Upon first glance, the course seemed to be in great shape--however, these were some of the worst non-punched greens I've ever played on. There were about 5 difference times of grasses in them which made them hard to distinguish from the rest of the course. Looked very patchy and rolled the same way. Felt like I was playing at Chambers Bay after that US open.

The rest of the course is ok and kept in decent shape but it was just impossible to do anything on those greens. The service was fair throughout the course including a nice cart girl and bartender, where there was a good happy hour offering after the round.

Will most likely not be back though due to the greens.

First trip to Wolf Run this year. Course is not quite as good as last year, but close. The marmots send their best.

Greens are smooth, but slower than normal (still round 10 on the stimp) and still tricky to putt. No bare spots on greens, fringe or rough around the greens.

Fairways are also OK, but beginning to show some bare spots. Likewise with the rough, but more bare spots than the fairways. Rough getting thick. Tees are OK, flat but tending toward the thin side.

Staff is pleasant. Beverage service regular. Ice chest and ball washer on each gas cart. Bring your own towels and range finder.

We had a tournament rate of $50 which included range balls, a bottled water in the ice chest, and a hot dog and soda. Nice shaded patio and good sized bar and eating area. Parking is awkward with no carts in the parking lot. Good practice putting green, but driving range has mats.

Good location close to downtown Reno and a pleasant place to play. Much more enjoyable when the wind doesn't blow.

Course was in good shape. Little damp at start. Pleasant to play with no real wind.

Greens were good, but felt a little spongy. Consistent medium fast on each green. Quite a few bare spots on fairways and in rough. Will be better as it cools off for the fall.

Nothing has really changed here in the last couple years. Gas carts with ball washer and ice chest. Marshals are around often and are quite helpful. Beverage service was also regular and pleasant.

Good place to play at a decent price around $55. If you can get a discounted rate, even better. Wind blows here often, especially in the afternoon. But we had a no wind day which made for a very nice round. Need to be aware of the mountain effect on approach shots and putting.
