Played on 11/5/10 8:30a.m. Rye? Rye? Rye?. Q: Why would a golf course be built with rye fairways? A: Cheaper cost thats why. I have yet to play a golf course with rye fairways that are not thin and these fairways are no exception! Sterling Hills is a pretty nice course. Layout is interesting enough, water comes into play if you hit a bad shot. The design of the greens are one of my favorites in VC and to me are the main reason I play here. They were just aerated and really bumpy, they could probably use another coat of sand to smooth them out a bit. The course always seems to be on the wet side, lots of mud balls. Overall the course was in decent shape worth $45, but I would never pay the $80 weekend rate to play on those thin fairways, especially with Rustic Canyon around the corner for $62. Maybe they'll reinvest in the course someday and seed the fairways with bermuda.
