Just played Butterfield. The course is short even from the Blue (Championship) tees but the layout is interesting. There are some risk/rewards on the doglegs if you can get the driver up in the air. The greens are soft and receptive to approach shots but they don't roll very true and are very bumpy. I landed in one greenside bunker and felt that it was hard when I entered it. But I didn't understand just how truly hard it was until my 56 degree Sand Wedge completely failed to enter it. Subsequently sending my ball flying across the green. Thankfully, one of my playing partners interrupted my obvious frustration with a timely remark; "Oh yeah, the sand traps are a little hard here." My next thought was to question whether they had slipped some Quikcrete in the traps while making the cart paths. Anyway, the round was going good, until we were advised at about 4:45 that our round was officially over due to darkness. I was blown away and so was our group. The sun had just dropped out of view and there was plenty of light. I asked the Marshall with obvious disgust, "Are you serious?" The older gentleman replied, "Yup, new insurance rules. You can't play in darkness." As he drove away to annoy the next foursome, I could only assume that the "new insurance rules" pertain to the inherent danger of driving a golf cart without lights in the darkness. However, I could be wrong. Thankfully, though, my son and I were walking and continued our round anyway. So, be aware, if you take that Twilight discount, you are going to be hurried off the course in the minute that the sun drops below the horizon. This information, of course, was not disclosed when we checked in.
