Always a treat to play in Coronado but what a bear getting onto the island on an early weekday morning. We were unfortunately following a tournament with many non golfing service personnel. Had we been told beforehand at the pro shop we would have set a reservation for another day. The 5 1/2 hour round kind of ruined the day for me. I always enjoyed this course and the scenery and very seldom get the opportunity to play here so I was disappointed the course was not in better shape. Next time will be not be very soon and will definitely ask about tournaments before making the long drive.

Played on July 13, 2023. Only the second time at this course. Very challenging and plays very long from the Blue Tees. Course is in very good condition with beautiful vistas. Bunkers are sandy but very hard. Should be heavily raked to fluff them up. All in all, well worth the visit and the green fees.

The Vineyard is a challenging and enjoyable course to play. Normally I have no complaints but the grass on the greens are starting to blossom. This makes the greens very unsmooth and extremely slow. Everyone in my foursome was unable to putt hard enough to reach the hole. It is an unusual situation. Be aware it can mess up your putting touch. I played Rancho Bernardo the same week and it took four holes to get used to putting normal speed again. I was blasting by the holes by ten feet.

Willow Glen is the most challenging of the three courses here. The layout requires you to drive right and left in order to play the doglegged fairways and very straight to play the narrow fairways to avoid being blocked by trees. However, the course is currently under major renovation. Holes 6 thru 9 are closed. A large lake around Hole 4 and 5 is being rebuilt. Both holes are drastically shortened with a temporary green on 4 and temporary tee box on 5. I played with a threesome that lives in the area and they say Singing Hills has done a fantastic job remodeling Oak Glen and is finally finished. That's the course to play right now so if you see discounted rates for Willow Glen, you'll understand why. No time table when the remodeling will be done on this course but I would wait 6 months before playing this course again.

When I played Carlton Oaks 25 years ago, this was considered one of the top tracks in San Diego. The layout is still there and has always made this a challenging course, but the overall conditions are pretty poor. It is a lonely shell of its former glory. Most of the Oak trees are dead or dying. Tee boxes are rough and not flat. I was constantly moving my ball to find a good patch of grass on the fairways. Greens are rock hard and do not reward great approach shots. The saving grace of this venue is that staff are friendly and the green fees are often quite low. It's not worth the drive if you pay more than $40 to play.

Played here in September with friends who had a pass. Civilians can play here but you need to buy a 60 day gate pass, which isn't worth it to just play once. The experience is not anything to write about. It's an OK course with some interesting holes. There are several holes with large elevation change. Fairways are spotty and the grass catches balls from rolling very far. It's an older designed course with smallish greens. For the money, I much prefer playing at Arrowood or Oceanside muni which are better values and closer to wherever you are coming from.

If you have never played this course, be aware that The Crossings is NOT for beginners or high handicappers. Even from the White tees, there are many long, straight drives required to get over canyons. There is a strong opportunity to lose your golf ball on virtually every hole (except for two very short par 3's). The greens are very large and multi-tiered with lots of break at each level. Many people hate this golf course because of its difficulty and sometimes "unfair" pin placements. Others complain about the airplane noise, quirky par 3's and huge distances between some greens and the next tee box. But if you are a good golfer and have played this course many times, you will appreciate the challenge and uniqueness of The Crossings. The course is always kept in very good condition and plays differently depending on the winds and pin placement. The Crossings was the most expensive public golf course to build, but it also has the best clubhouse and restaurant of any course in San Diego County. I feel privileged to play here as a local resident.

Played on Oct30-2022. A beautiful Sunday with the course completely empty except for me and the golf Marshall and his buddy. It has been more than 15 years since I last played here. The course and surrounding community has changed a lot. Thankfully, the Marshall was helpful in directing me where to aim on each hole. There are many blind shots and the layout has changed from 3 nines to a combined 18 hole course. There are some long distances between some greens and the next tee box. I'm going to be easy on this review and take into consideration that the course might be under normal Fall maintenance conditions. Overall the course was in rough shape, but it is still worth a visit because of the last five holes along the ocean. The Par 3, 173 yd over the water (Hole #15) by itself is worth playing here. Spectacular views. Staff is very friendly and very accommodating to non-spanish speaking patrons. The restaurant is good, but ask for take out if you have less than 40 minutes before teeing off.

Played on Oct 11,2022. Hole #10 is closed. Hole 11 is split into a 105yard par 3 and a 420 yard par 4. Total par is 70. Many greens have a fungus that they are cutting out so more holes will be closed in the near future. This a very short easy course as is. Now it's even shorter. White tees are less than 5500yards. Working staff are nice and polite but in general, the management always wants to promote what a great course Encinitas Ranch is. It's an above average muni course at its absolute prime. It is always very busy and that's good for them. If you shoot in the 88-100 range, this is a course that will boost your confidence. If you shoot below 88, you will not find this course very challenging. There are a few interesting holes, but overall it earns the nickname Easy Ranch. With the current conditions and the shortening of the course, it will be quite awhile before I come back. The green fees are way too high for what you get. Much better value and enjoyment to be found at most other North County courses.
