Happy to report that the South course overseed has progressed nicely since my last update. Fairways are now about 8/10 with good coverage except for the normal "Indian burial ground" spots where nothing seems to grow. Fortunately, these are small in size and can easily be resodded if desired. One truckload needed for entire course, whereas a few weeks ago it would have been one per hole.

Greens are the highlight of the course. Very fast, firming up nicely, but ball will still check up. You can now play a variety of pitch and chip shots instead of just flying the ball to the hole.

Sand depth is more even now. Tees are lush.

Lot of fun to play. CPO restrictions on about 4 holes. Slows down play by about 30 min.

Got out on the North course after being closed ten days for maintenance. You couldn't even tell the greens were aerated and they had some speed to them. Soft with some firmness mixed in, the green should be up to top speed by mid November, once cooler weather arrives and they have been rolled a few times. Pas pallum Bermuda fairways look great as the base has held up (unlike the South course) and they didn't have to overseed them, tees still have several varieties of grass but are very playable and bunkers are quite nice too. I'm sure by February we will wish the fairways were overseeded as the Bermuda stops growing during cold weather. The rough has great coverage and is very nasty as the ball sinks right to the bottom. Nice thing is that there are no cart path restrictions, so POP is 4 hours.

Thoroughly surprised as i was expecting two mediocre courses for several more months.

Played today after the long awaited reseeding of the fairways. Cart path only today and maybe for the next month. Wouldn't you know but the group ahead of us turned off the GPS and drove straight onto the first fairway. And then tried riding in the rough to get as close to their ball as possible. No pride whatsoever.

Fairways were just awful. Patches of fairways had no grass either due to poor soil preparation or poor seed disbursement. Probably needed 2x the amount of seed than they actually used. Greens were pretty good having just been rolled. Tee boxes level and grass grew in better than fairways. Way too much sand in bunkers. Rough is thick and lush. Difficult to play out of because ball sits down which is fine.

POP was 4.5 hours due to CPO. Hopefully by 12/1 the fairways should fill in but no holding my breath as the grass will stop growing once it get colder.

Course owner should be embarrassed because there were perfect conditions to grow grass yet once again they failed.

North course has returned to excellent condition as the bermuda grass has popped during the last few weeks. Still hard on wrists when taking bird nest divots but at least there is full coverage on fairways. Greens have some speed to them as mowing heights have been lowered as compared to previous summers. Soft on approaches yet you can bump and run pitch shots. Sand traps have too much sand in spots and they still haven't figured out how to rake bunkers so ball doesn't roll into a downhill lie.

Played yesterday and as previously stated by Weber the course is not in good shape, except for the greens. It appears the maintenance team is experimenting with several different techniques to grow grass in the fairways as summer ALWAYS presents challenges due to a very weak bermuda grass base after the winter cool weather overseed dies off. So far, grass is growing where golfers do not hit golf balls from (no foot or cart traffic) but the landing zones off the tees and near the greens are almost barren. Appears we are going to be in for 3-4 months of typically bad fairways. Fairways need a complete redo to fix obvious drainage issues and replace irrigation system. Absentee new owner still MIA. Reclaimed water not helping. Aerating North course greens next week is going to put even more traffic on South. Might be good time to take a vacation.

Greens in solid shape heading into the summer. A bit on the moist, spongy side so large ball marks. Inconsistent speeds but still running around 10.5. Fairways have plenty of grass coverage but bermuda has taken over again and getting bird nest divots which are hard on the wrists. Rough is nasty as ball sinks to bottom. Sand traps are raked better but inconsistency in sand depth means you either hit the liner or never reach bottom. Green surrounds are tough because of slopes and chipping into/away from direction grass is growing.

Teed off around noon. POP exactly 4 hours. Cart girls and snack shop keep golfers hydrated and marshalls maintain pace of play.

Played on Saturday in the heat. Fairways were punched last week and in some spots were heavily soaked so we had to pay winter rules with the mud balls and standing water. Greens had also been worked on with small tines, sanding, and verticutting. Surprising speed was still pretty good and of course, balls were holding greens. Sand trap raking preparation is very consistent, however depth of sand is a mixed bag, and there is a certain group of players who just refuse to rake bunkers or repair ball marks. July thru October has historically been the worst conditioned months for this course as the cool season grass dies and the bermuda tries to regrow. Will be interesting to see if new superintendent can do better this summer. Still no sign of new owners after 18 months so of course no capital improvements to golf course. POP was 4 hours so very good.

Played South on Friday. Ditto on Weber's comments. Fairways and greens are finally perfect, almost like what you would find in the desert. However, that generally means that maintenance is just around the corner. Five months to get it perfect for one winter month of great play, then back to normal reality. Collars around greens are very inconsistent as it's like playing on broccoli. No way to putt as balls bounce around like a pachinko machine. Dormant rough barely hides the hardpan underneath. Tee boxes are fine, sand traps are inconsistently raked, 1/2 in some spots, 3" in others. Part of the issue is bunker design where ball should roll to the bottom but often rolls further back into a downhill lie. POP was 4 hours. CPO still on a few holes for some reason. Would never have known we received 5" of rain a few weeks ago due to firmness of course.

Played on Saturday. 1/2" rain made the course CPO. Fairways at this point are hard packed sand, very little in way of grass growing. Rough is dormant, patchy Bermuda, We joke that the club wastes fuel and labor mowing the fairways as there is not much to mow. Overseeded tee boxes have not been mowed for a week so it's like hitting out of the rough. Greens have returned to inconsistent conditions. Firm surfaces yet stimp speeds range from 8 to 12 from one hole to the next. Lots of unrepaired ball marks and unfilled divots. Sand traps inconsistent as well as they try to remove gravel from a failed bunker project several years ago.

Staff tries their best under new ownership but billionaire owner is completely MIA and his manager spends money like he is in welfare line. Heard so many promises over the last year, yet conditions have not improved but membership has grown where it is now almost impossible to get an online tee time two weeks in advance (tee times gone within a minute) however 20% of the players no show on playing day. Unfortunately it's the atmosphere the club has created, but they are in denial of situation. A perfect example of a club that is being "taken over".

North fairways really need new type of grass and improved drainage but that costs money of which the new owner is unwilling to provide at this time. Hopefully it gets the Shorecliff makeover in the future.

Play with my buddies on beautiful morning with 10-15 mph winds. Overseeded fairways are beautiful that enables us to play the ball down as that had been an issue last month. Greens are firm and fast, but you need to control your spin due to some false fronts. Too many unrepaired ball marks as some members are lazy and don't like to bend over much or walk three extra steps to their mark. Bunkers have new sand, almost too much at this point but I expect maintenance to spread it around more evenly during the next few weeks. Lucky if members rake bunkers properly. They almost expect someone to magically appear and do it for them. Tee boxes are level are green. The par 3 boxes have lots of divots in certain areas mainly due to not moving them more frequently. Rough is very knarly, dormant bermuda grass that makes it near impossible to get clean contact. The fairway lines on #6 and #9 have been shifted up near the green which helps out sightlines.

Played Saturday morning. Greens are firm and fast. Well struck shot can hold the green but you must control your spin since severe undulations coupled with raised greens can result in ball rolling 40 feet off green and down hills where knarly bermuda rough awaits. Fairways remain the biggest challenge as pas pallum bermuda grass has failed to grow in leaving hard, sand packed surfaces to hit from. Like one long sand covered runway. Bunkers are getting refilled with new white sand, but it's hit or miss with the traps with old sand. Tee boxes are in good shape because they were overseeded. Choose your poison here: great greens with bad fairways are much better than bad greens with great fairways. We've had them both within the past six months (along with bad greens and bad fairways) just never great green and great fairways. Could be the reason why legacy members are leaving in droves. Very difficult to obtain tee times as online system may have been compromised. Too many members here with too many membership categories. Too embarrassed to bring guests out to play in these conditions. New billionaire owners not going to pump any money into course except for basic maintenance costs. Very disappointing conditions compared to rest of private clubs in OC.

Out on Saturday for a leisurely 4 1/2 hour round. Overseed of fairways has grown in nicely although there are certain "Indian burial ground" areas that just refuse to grow anything. I think it's a drainage problem more than anything and until the course recontours the fairways and drains, it will continue to be an issue. Fairways are a bit moist so a continuation of mud balls until they dry out somewhat. Greens starting to firm up and a nice consistent 11 speed and you have to play more bump and run chip shots rather than a straight flops landing within 5 ft of hole. Pin setter is finding more new pin positions lately that is a welcome change. Rough is dormant, knarly bermuda and not a place you want to visit. Sand traps remain the biggest issue with gravel poking thru in some spots while it could be quicksand a few feet away. Overseeded tee boxes are in good condition but tee markers don't get moved very much. About five holes are CPO for members but for Monday outside tournament play there are no such restrictions.
