OK...I must say, I can't agree with the positive reviews recently given to this course Are the members posting these reviews staff members at San Juan? Trying to lure in more unsuspecting golfers like myself? So let's get down to business...
TEE BOXES
I have never played on a course in worse shape than this place. And believe me, I'm a cheapie so I have been to many muni courses and small courses around OC and LA. Poorly maintained, uneven and brown patches all over.
on to the FAIRWAY
It should be a crime to allow a facility to let people play in the condition it was in. Brown patches ALL OVER; and with the recent rain, these "brown" patches turned to quicksands. Good thing I opted to ride as I usually walk, otherwise, I wouldn't be alive posting this review to warn others.
BUNKERS
Again, I know it rained so I wasn't expecting fluffy sand. However, as my ball found the bunkers on the 10th and 15th holes, I don't think there was ever sand in there. More like gravel and soil were dumped in the bunker, sprinkled with sand. I was afraid to step into the bunker fearing I would get stuck!
GREENS
OK, believe me, I am a very nice individual so I will give their greens the thumbs up. Though a bit slow in the early morning, I must say they were in great shape. No ball marks and none of the dreaded "brown patches" I have previously mentioned.
To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. Before going to the course, I read up on the reviews. Certain people mentioned this is a "hidden gem" in the OC. Well, they should have kept it hidden. I just recently moved to Aliso Viejo which is only a ten minute drive. Imagine what review I would have given had I driven an hour to this place?
If you're not willing to spend money at Tijeras or Tustin Ranch or drive East,...go to Anaheim Hills, Mile Square...heck, I'd rather go to Willowick in Santa Ana and be harassed by the neighborhood kids than come back to SJH. Scratch that...I'd rather go play at David Baker!
I WANTED TO DEMAND A REFUND, but hey...it's Christmas and I'm being nice!

Played the 'wick 2 months ago and did not have a pleasant experience walking as the fairways were over watered and greens had A LOT of unrepaired ball marks. Last week, had an itch to play but only had $20 in my wallet. Went back to 'wick and what a pleasant surprise it was. Fairways were in great condition, flat and nicely mowed with hardly any brown spots! Greens were fabulous but was on the slow side...maybe a 7...however, very well-manicured! If the conditions stay the way they are now, I'd keep going back for a boost in ego and practice straight drives off the tee. BTW, on hole 16, par 4 dogleg left...hit a perfect draw with a 5 hybrid and landed just 5 feet short of the green in between the two front bunkers; turned it to my 3rd birdie for the day!
