I played on 01/27/11. This is a fun little course that I went around twice to get 18 in. Played in a fog bank most of the day, the only thing missing was somebody yelling “Marco!” and someone else answering “Polo!”. The whole place is stuffed in between an industrial park, the freeway, and the railroad tracks. To get to it you have to go down a small two lane frontage road. I have to admit that the first time I came out here I was afraid the bunkers and water hazards might be old junked-out tow trucks, engine blocks and stacks of wood pallets, but my fears were soon put away.

They have a small pro shop that is stocked to the “tee”with every thing you could want, including a couple of bags with signs “Anything in the bag for $9.99”. The guy running the shop made sure to let me know they have free golf one week before or after your birthday, it will probably cost me the same as green fees in gas to get out here but what the heck, I is now a golf Ho! They have a practice putting green, a practice bunker. and a good range with brand new bright yellow golf balls, they are very proud of their new balls, at least that's what all the banners say.

Everything was in good condition for a small course like this. The only cons for this course are things that can't really be helped like:

*Great huge electrical towers run through the middle of the course that you have to avoid. The last time I played this place I was on the short fairway of hole 2 and made a lousy drive and had to muscle the ball with a five iron. My ball hit one of the concrete pylons of the super structures and shot straight back at me like a Bolide ripping through the ionosphere, I had no direction to go other than down, I hit the deck and the ball landed about 10 feet from me. After I got my wits about me I looked over at the guy I had been paired up with. He was of (of course) no use to me as he was bent over his push cart brushing the tears out of his eyes while trying to catch his breath.

*Railroad tracks run parallel with the tee box and fairways of hole four about 50 feet away. Depending on what time of the day it is you can watch your ball do the cha-cha on your tee and fall off as the train goes by. This was an interesting couple of minutes as all golf came to a halt on hole 4 until the train passed.

*Hole eight is a fun one also, I call this “shooting the gauntlet” - you have to drive the ball between two giant towers to make it to the wide open fairway where you will dog leg right to avoid the huge mound of earth that reminds me of an Indian burial mound that guards the green. The real sucker punch of this green is the bunkers between the death mound and the greens that you can not see if you try to drive the ball over it.

Final verdict: I will be back for my free birthday play! I love me some strange!

Played on 01/14/11. I must say that I wasn't sure what to expect when I found this course. An 18 hole that only charges $16 for a round, what the hell I thought, it's a beautiful day and I'm sneaking out. It's a small place just a couple of miles outside of Davis, what you would call a bedroom community of Sacramento, not too uppity, just small town fun.

The Pro shop is small, sparsely stocked and had friendly people. The snack bar served all the normal grub and fixings and proudly displayed a sign that they now served Bloody Mary's. “Cash only sir, feel free to use that ATM thing over there if you need to.” It kind of brought me back to another time and another place in my life. It was a little strange to meet humble people like this when only a few miles away was a world class college and a fantastic medical facility, UC Davis.

I was paired up with three older gentleman for the round. Two were friends and two of us were strangers, I wasn't sure how this was going to go. I, of course, got completely “schooled” by all of them. They were a load of fun, but these boys were here to play.

The course is a little on the short side. It has 6 par 3's, 11 par 4's and 1 par 5. The drainage is not the greatest but good enough for the price. From what one of the locals tell me the fairways on 6 or 7 are intermittent water hazards depending on the weather and what time of year it is, I guess we lucked out this time. The fairways were fine for a local course.

I feel that the water hazards were there more for looks than anything else. Water only played into one hole. The bunkers on the other hand were great! I hit into them a couple of times and it was like hitting out of fresh powdered snow! The greens, however, are the slowest you will ever play and I sincerely mean this. If you are used to two-putting, I guaranty you will three-put. By the 6th hole I was hitting my putter so hard that I was considering re-purposing my driver.

If you play out here, I recommend that you play early in the day. Some time after 1pm the price drops to $8 and the wolves descend, the only thing missing is a few kegs, loud music, and a dance floor. The juxtaposition of morning and afternoon is incredible!

This is not a fancy country club, but a true down-home golf course where local golfers like to meet up, bust each others chop's, and play golf. I look forward to coming back as often as I can and seeing who I get paired up with...in the morning that is.

Played today - 1/8/11

Had a great time, and as always, the staff was super. I played by myself and it was very quiet for a Saturday. So few people play this course and I didn't run into anyone until the last two holes. The fairways are dormant for the winter but as always the greens are great! I almost shot par on a par 4 but my ball bounced off the pole and caused my ball to lip out. I can't blame this on the hole - bummer. Though the course was pretty dry after all the rain we had, a couple of spots were roped off due to the softness of the ground. I'm really looking forward to the spring when the fairways will come back to life.

I played the Vintner's golf club today - 12/7/10

It is a nice little nine-hole just outside of Napa. It's not great, but nice. The Lakeside grill and golf shop share one large rustic room. The golf shop has taken a minimalist approach and carries the standard ball caps, golfballs, and bags of tees. The grill is a cozy little affair where you would want to meet up after a few rounds and have a drink and a bite to eat.

The guys behind the counter were super friendly and pointed out every thing they had to offer. I decided to go hit a bucket of balls to warm up and was pleasantly surprised at the driving range. It was the coolest driving range I have hit at so far. The range is in an L formation. Mats on the right and grass around the left past the parking lot and fire station. They had bunkers and pin flags at different elevations to hit at. I will go back there if nothing else but to hit some balls.

Later, I went to retrieve a pull cart and the guy behind the desk recommended that I use one with the larger wheels, boy was he right. The course was like mud-soup and apparently had a drainage problem. As I got ready to tee off I looked up the hill at the white castle that was the military veteran's home, I paid my homage to them for their sacrifices and tee'd off. Apparently my gratitude was not enough for them and their hovering souls decided to have fun with my ball. I chased that little white devil all over the course, slipping and sliding. At times I think I hydroplaned across the fairways trying to get to my ball, so I put the score card back in my pocket and decided to just have fun. The greens had not yet recovered from the aeration job from a month ago. I am not a great putter but I got to see my ball bounce around like it was going through a vintage Japanese pachinko machine. I found this to be a novel way to pass the time. To add to this, a few of the bunkers were flooded and I couldn't help but laugh and then pray that I didn't hit into one of them.

On a side note, apparently someone did not think that the water and sand hazards were enough, so they installed 2 free range biting hazards down at the 4th hole -white swans the size of baby elephants. I suggest that you load a cargo pocket with chunks of wonder bread so that you can throw out chafe if one of these b (at) sterds gets on your six. The hundreds of geese were no problem and quite docile I found. They parted and got out of my way freely while giving me the big “Hairy eyeball”. In retrospect I have to assume that they have figured out how to genetically pass down the information from one generation to another not mess with the bipeds that carry a bag of metal and graphite “She-lay-lee's”.

In all fairness I can not give an accurate review of this course do to the weather of the past few days. I will be sure to go back when it is a bit dryer.

Played today. 11/14/10 – Employees were very friendly and their customer service was very good. Fairways were turning lightly brown for the winter but the tee boxes and greens were nice and green. This is a fun course. I like that they have water points along the way so you can get something to drink if you run out of water. I did not eat at the “Nest” but I did check it out. They have plenty of cold drinks and adult beverages along with a variety of hot and cold sandwiches. They also have onion rings, mozzarella sticks and other things like soup and salads. I found the bathrooms to be nice and clean. I would recommend this course to anyone.
