I played on 5/13 and thought the greens were in pretty bad shape. They had some problems with their greens earlier and are letting them grow in. Consequently they were all slow or inconsistent from one to the other. They try to manage the consistency by letting them all grow in, but this makes them very slow and the ball doesn't roll true. I think it will be a few months before the greens are back up to snuff. The balance of the course is in pretty good shape. I wouldn't pay the full rack rate for this course given the conditions of the greens. Look for a buy on Golf Now or the local paper.

Played 36 holes here on 12/07. The greens have really come in well. The course is back to its normal fantastic shape. The greens are not quite as fast as they are at the peak of the golf season, but they were certainly rolling well.

The greens are in good shape and they don't expect to have to punch them. The course is getting a lot of play these past several weeks and it shows in spots with divots in the fairways and ball marks on the greens. The crew does a pretty good job of keeping up with it all, but the patrons sure could help out by repairing more of their own divots - and how about raking a trap once in awhile.
Nevertheless, the course is is good overall shape.

Well, this is the lowest rating I've given my favorte course in SD. They had just punched the greens the day before, so it's not entirely their fault. The balance of the course is still in great shape. I've played here probably 15 times this year and the greens had not been up to par from prior years. They were generally much slower than they had been in the past. I'm hoping that after the greens bounce back from being punched that they will be in better shape next year.

Played Mission / Presidio on 10/15 and 10/17. The course is in very good shape. One of the few courses in SD county that punched their greens early. So go now as most other courses are still punching their greens. I'm not a huge fan of the layout at Riverwalk, but I still enjoy it. Presidio in my favorite 9 holes. Mission has a couple of shorter par 4s with a quirky layout (holes 2 and 3). The location of the course often lends itself to being a Mecca for tourists and beginning golfers, so pace of play is often an issue here. I played on a Friday afternoon as a 3some and we finished in la little ess than 4 hours. I also played early (6:30 am) Sunday as a 3some and we finished in less than 3 hours.

Playing time for a 2some = 3.5 hours

I hadn't made the trip up to Oceanside since the winter. This course, when played from the tips or blues always poses a reasonable challenge. However, the local rule of a free drop for balls entering the "flower-beds" seems overly generous to me, as my playing partner probably saved 5 strokes by invoking the rule - especially from areas that were questionable flower beds. Nevertheless, a good time was had by all.

My likes about the course are....

1. Greens - are generally moderately fast, consistent from hole to hole. Some are unreasonably sloped.
2. Length - I like the course from the tips or the blues - a good challenge.
3. Generally it's always in pretty good shape.

My dislikes.....
1. Bunkers are very inconsistent from one to another. some with deep fluffy sand and some with very little sand in them.
2. No one on this course seems to know how to fix a divot in the fairway or ball marks on the greens.
3. No cart service on this day.

I play here often and I'm usually thrilled each and every time with the quality of the course, the professionalism of the staff and shape of the greens. However, over the past couple of months, it seems like the greens have been struggling to survive the summer heat. The greens usually roll at a challenging 11+ on the stimp. Lately, they have been slow - around 9+ on the stimp. Additionally, they have lost all the grass on several sections of several greens. It's no fun putting through fungus infected sections.

I was out there yesterday 7/26 and it looks like they are starting to come back. The fairways, rough and tee boxes were all in pretty good shape. Overall, the course looks like it is getting a lot more play. I'm beginning to miss the good old days of 3 and 1/2 hour rounds. Those seem to be gone with the success of their Players Club program that get's you 50% off on the green fees.

I played as a walk on single on 12/28. There was a short frost delay, but I was able to join another 3 some at 8:30 AM. The course was in it's typical good shape. My only complaint was that there were several clumps of rye blooming up through the thick bermuda surrounding the greens. This often made it a challenge chipping around the greens. I shouldn't complain seeing as it is late December.

I have a Maderas Preferred Club membership card. It's a good deal if you enjoy playing at one of the finest courses in the County as much as I do. with the card the green fees were $80.

The fairways and bunkers were in fantastic shape. The greens were smooth and rolled true. They were not as fast as they usually are, again a symptom of the winter. The greens were rolling at about 10.5 as opposed to the usual 12+.

Although I didnt happen to play that well this particular day, it is still one of my favorites.

Staff is always great there and the price helps ensure that the course is populated with serious golfers. Consequently, the pace of play - even after a frost delay - was great. My 4some finished in 4 hours 15 min. We only had a short wait on the 4some in front of us on 2 holes.

Go and enjoy.

Played on 9/28/07 at 11:00. Staff was great as usual. The tee boxes were being scalped in preparation for overseeding. The fairways are also being prepared to overseeding, so there were a lot of dry and bare spots. That was a little disappointing as the fairways are normally a real bright spot. The greens were lush and green, but they were a lot slower than they usually are. The bunkers were in great but it looked like a couple of them had recently been regrromed with new sand (13 and 10), which meant they were a little on the fluffy side.

They will be going through major winterization over the next couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to the course being back in it typical great shape.

Played here on 8/5. The course was in good condition. The fairways were well groomed, although a bit wet during my 7:00 am tee time. Our foursome finished in 4.5 hours and we only had to wait a couple of times. The staff did a great job keeping everyone moving in the early morning groups.

Greens were in good shape. Much of the bumpiness noted by Pumphrie is gone - but not completely. Greens were not fast as they usually are but putts still rolled pretty true. I'm hoping they make it through the August heat - if they do they should be in great shape for the Fall.

Played here at the end of July. Weather was great but a little warm. The greens were in pretty good shape. However, the fairways were inconsistent with weeds and some bare spots. I don't mind it if the rough is high and you have to hack it out. But at Carlton Oaks, you could be a yard off of the fairway and find yourself in a weed patch. The condition of teh course off of the fairways were very poor. The bunkers were in varying condition. Some bunkers were hard with little sand and others were deep sand ---not to be confused with some of the waste areas around the course.

I will skip this course next time.

Well, they really should be paying me to play here....with all the rave reviews I leave about this golf course. Played on 7/6/07 as a walk on. I was able to quickly join another 3some and we got right out there. We never had to wait on a single tee box. The group in front kept up a great pace on a tough course. Similarly, the group behind us never pressed us. We completed the round in 4 hours and 30 minutes. Pretty good for a bunch of hacks out there.

I played the blue tees - at 6654 yards. The fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. We got a lot of roll out of the fairways. There was a pretty good breeze blowing out of the west. It made number 5 a pretty tough hole blowing the ball from right to left.

The greens were in good shape - they rolled true - but were slower than they usually are. I know that the greens are due to be punched again next week.

Go and enjoy. It's one of the few $100+ courses that I think is worth the money.
