Too little has been said, both in this forum and in other sites' reviews, of Marshall Canyon's natural beauty and of its distinctive--and distinctly appealing--character. Though only a short drive up (both on the map and in altitude) from the buzzing eight-lane 210 Freeway, this course provides what few, if any, tracks within a 40-mile radius can offer: a bucolic setting (no tract homes or condos lining these fairways), gorgeous vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys, and unmistakably NATIVE flora and fauna. Mature oaks--not potted palms or shaggy-barked eucalyptus--frame every fairway and diabolically contoured green; mesquite and brush (and likely a few rattlesnakes, though I've never had a close encounter with any of the slithery tribe) fill the canyon that gives the course its name; and wild deer frolic with impunity over all but a few areas of the property. Even when my ball-striking isn't what I'd wish, even when duck-hooked drives and shanked irons take me to areas of the course I never planned to visit, I find myself at peace in this little Shangri-la. Granted, you'll play more than a few side-hill, uphill, and down-dale lies, and if you walk this layout you might find you'll need a few moments to catch your breath or recover from the lactic acid-buildup in your thighs and calfs (especially after climbing the third fairway, a dogleg-left par 4 with a small, well-guarded green on which you'd swear your third or fourth putts broke uphill) before you've gathered the strength and equilibrium you'll need for your next shot, but if you're of a like mind with this duffer, you'll find it well worth the effort. I try to make time to play at least 15 holes (the last few usually in the sunset gloaming-- all I can manage with early-afternoon starts on these short winter days) at least once per week. Friendly staff and well-maintained--if exasperatingly hard-to-read-- greens for lagniappe. Enjoy.
