I played here yesterday 11/5. It was my first time playing this course, but it's one I've wanted to play for years. I stumbled upon an 11:50 tee time yesterday morning on GolfNow at a reasonable rate (for this course anyway) of $79. Everyone else checking in at the same time was paying over $100, so I guess I got a good deal.

I've had mixed reactions in general to Nicklaus courses and my reaction to Angeles National is just as mixed.

The conditions were not great, so that didn't help. The tee boxes were awful, mainly due to the overseeding they were doing on all of them. They had the black, blue and white tees all grouped together at the blue distances. Luckily I usually play blue anyway, but other people wouldn't have a choice. Not sure how long it will be set up that way. Several of the tee boxes were muddy and puddled up with water. Let's just say it is very odd teeing off in standing water conditions.

The fairways were OK. Pretty patchy with brown spots. Fairways were very firm and fast, so if you play right now expect A LOT of extra roll on your drives. With ample trouble you can get into (well placed bunkers and lots of environmental hazard areas), you have to be careful off the tee to not run through and into a bad spot. The rough was in pretty good shape and easy to play from. Personally, I preferred hitting my iron shots out of the nice rough as opposed to the firm, tight-lie fairways.

The greens and bunkers were in great shape (except for the inconsiderate people who don't repair their ball marks or rake the sand). Greens were also firm and FAST. I've heard the greens here were tough and that is certainly true. Hard to read, hard to hold. Very large greens with tough pin placements makes it hard to get close with an approach. If you have any birdie putts within 15-20 feet, you are doing very well.

The staff was friendly, on time and organized. There were a number of big groups going out this day (a tournament and a bachelor party), but we teed off on time and the pace was decent for a weekend on a full course. A little under 5 hours for the round.

Overall, Angeles National is a challenging track with great scenery all around. Like any Nicklaus course, it has its quirks and can be evil at times (especially on/around the greens), but a good test for golfers of all levels. Would love to play it someday when it was in better shape, though, and that might improve my opinion. Not sure I would ever pay the full rack rate here, but it's decent if you can get a deal.

The only other thing I wanted to comment on is there's a huge difference between the men's and women's tee boxes. We had a woman in our group who was a really good driver of the ball (200+ off the tee) and it probably played too short for someone of her skill level. A few of the par 3's had the women teeing off within 50-60 yards of the hole (when the men are at 175+), which seemed a bit silly. So if you are a longer-hitting woman and want a tougher test on this course, you may consider playing whites instead of the reds.

Played Friday, Oct. 28., ANGC e-mail special rate of $60 at 1:00 p.m. Really good conditions throughout, except for 18 green. Unlike the others, that green was really soft and had a lot of water fowl on or near it throughout the day. It was not terrible, but you could tell it was not like the other greens, which I would say were nearly immaculate. Greens rolled fast and true. The course plays tough and you have to hit the ball straight or suffer a penalty drop due to the environmentally sensitive areas. Lots of cactus and rocks outside the rough, so don't go in. The tee boxes, rough, and sand were nearly pristine. Lots of maintenance personnel onsite trimming, edging, and blowing; however, they were not annoying to the golfers.

Angeles National has decided to join up with GolfNow recently and midweek pricing is $64 per person. This course is certainly worth the price. The greens are some of the most difficult in all of LA. The course is in beatiful shape and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend this course now that the price has dropped.

Played here on Saturday afternoon, 10/8. Teed off at 12:20 as a threesome. Never saw anyone ahead of us. We finished in just under 4 hours. The course is in very good condition. Tee boxes and fairways are mostly lush, with good lies nearly everywhere on the fairyway. There is a little hard pan hear and there, but nothing too bad. It's mostly found on the edges of the fairway. The greens are smooth and running medium. I would like them to be a little faster, but they roll well, and will hold a good shot. The sand in the two bunkers I visited was very soft and consistent. I really enjoy the layout here. It is a fairly challenging course, and very playable right now.

They have a fall special on greens fees here and it brings the price closer in value to the conditions overall in my opinion.

Greens were very nice - mainly very smooth though not too speedy. Perhaps a bit soft in places but that was likely due to morning watering. Fairways pretty burnt mainly, although lies were still favorable. Rough - patchy with lots of different growth but not really a factor except around the greens.

You can fly round here sometimes as it tends to be empty - drove it in less than 2.5 hours.

Fair amount of burned out/hardpan areas in the fairways. Many areas of the rough under repair or recently punched. Rough is very patchy and not in good quality.

Tee boxes/sand good - but you don't spend most of the round here. At the 100 dollar price point this is not up to standard. Even for twilight rates it's a stretch.

If it wasn't for the challenges the course presents, then this was reminiscent of muni golf, from a conditions standpoint.

The front nine of this course is one of the hardest 9's to score on. Back nine is so much easier. Playing from the tips is hard enough, but when the winds pick up, its going to be a long day.

60 dollar special anytime on a Wednesday. I'd say that's about the right price to pay for the present conditions here.
