I teed off today, Wednesday, at about 6:30. Nobody mentioned that the greens were punched when we made our tee time. The starter forgot to mention it when we paid full price. No sign alerting customers, Greens were bumpy and unputtable all day. I asked the starter after the round if they were going to sand the greens, as well. He was too busy taking someone else's money to answer. Give the greens two or three weeks to heal. A pretty fun layout. I just hate it when they pull that shady stuff on customers.

Took over a year since last poor experience at Chester Washington, but had read some good reviews of late so gave it another shot. Avoided the crowds by teeing off at 6:20am and actually got out early. Enjoy the addition of new features on the course, including new bunkers in many areas. The sand in the bunkers was really great - some of the best I've seen on a Muni course. The fairways are in pretty good shape - better than many at least. The rough will really kill your ball speed (as noted in last review), so that's not ideal. In fact, they could probably do with cutting the fairways a little shorter, and certainly the tee boxes. They're well covered, but really shaggy. Greens are small at CW, but in good condition. Ball won't roll fast - medium speed at most. And even though we started early, a few too many ball marks for my taste. A few greens are pretty tough to read as well. POP was a delightful 3 1/2 hours - a shocker at CW, but that's why you set the alarm for 5:30am. All in all, it was a good day out and probably best conditions I've seen at CW. One last thing to the staff - if Westchester, a much shorter course, can offer push carts, perhaps CW can, too. Often want to walk but not always carry the bag, so please acquire some push carts and give customers that option.

Played Monday, today with a few of my buddies -- Swing18 and RobStretch. Kudos to staff at CW, course is in FINE shape for a municipal. Greens are in decent shape. The resizing of several greens have gone well. Expect a different variety of grass on some of these greens but it did not seem to affect direction or speed. Greens rolled pretty true and med/fast pace. Fairways may look a little yellow but as it heats up the fairways should get greener. There is good coverage and not a single bare spot in the fairways. Rough is thick and penalizing. It will zap a lot of distance so keep ball in fairways. First cut around greens really took a lot out of my ball so be a little aggressive if you want to land on the skirt. Sand in bunkers are white sandy beaches.

Course looks great. Pace of play was pretty fast. We caught up to a single on the back 9 around hole 13 until the pace slowed down. Nice steady breeze from West kept you thinking about where to place the ball on basic shots.

I suggest you consider playing here soon, the secret is already out and conditions can only get better after the latest round of aeration.

Thanks for the changes. Overall the conditions are just so-so. If only the nice sand quality the bunkers have right now could just stay that way.

Played yesterday during the heat of the day. It was a decent deal at $37 includes cart for a single through Golfzing. Greens were lush, bumpy and very slow. You could see the ball skip and slide over the blooming poa. The ball did not roll true and any line you could see would be handicapped with this... stuff. The ball would literally jump and skip to the hole if you were lucky. For the most part though that poa would knock the ball off course and leave you with a short putt. Greens IMHO are OK but as I was reading they will be undergoing maintenance next week so why would they bother to fix the situation until after the aeration? Fairways were in great shape though. Rough is very thick and sticky. Fairway bunkers had good coverage and tee boxes are very lush and level. Pace of play was hit and wait. What got me is that the groups ahead would not wave up for a few of the par 3s even though they would be waiting on the next tee box. We however did in order to create spacing and it worked for a little bit. Overall course is in OK shape. If not for the condition of the greens I would rate this course higher. Mileage will vary. It's decent golf if you forget about the greens. Good luck. One suggestion since you have an interim GM currently. Put a water cooler on the cart the starter uses on the first tee box. At least give us a chance at some cool water before we run around the course which has a few fountains here and there -- especially in this heat.

Played yesterday. Great deal $29.97 plus a cart on Golfzing. Congrats to Chris the GM who has been transferred to Los Verdes. I know Chester is losing a great and very dynamic GM and I wish him only more success at his new post at Los Verdes.

Greens today are in decent shape. The greens were very soft so your ball would stick; not a lot of release. Ball rolled pretty true with a few bumps in the road. Folks really have to fix their divots. Tee boxes flat and playable. Fairways are not as thin as you would expect without bare spots. Rough is almost cut to the height of the fairways (in most places) so not really a concern. Pace of play was sluggish. They were busy and it didn't help that the group in front really were slow as well. Pace of play 4.5 hours.

One thing to note, the marshall told us to speed up. One thing you don't get on Munis midweek. Nice to know they are actively pushing ahead, although one thing I didn't quite understand is why tell us to speed up then proceed to drive ahead and hinder our tee shots. Sure you were on the right in the tree line but if you want us to play faster then move out of our bloody way!

Rant over. Chester is in fine shape. POP was OK considering it was really busy on a Thursday. Conditions should bring you back. Oh yeah, they widened a number of greens and they are coming in nicely (hole 7, hole 10, 11 come to mind.)

Fairways and rough were on the thin side with not that much of a difference in height. Found one fairway bunker that was in good shape, didnt find any green side bunkers but they looked in good shape. Greens were very soft , very slow, and very bumpy. I think I found where all they pitch marks go to die, I have never seen so many unrepaired pitch marks on every green before. Pro shop staff was very nice and got me out right away.

Walked on as a single on the waiting list, got out in the 7th group off the tee. I didn't know they tee off in the dark here like Los Verdes! I wouldn't have thought this course was quite as compelling, but I do remember it being slow.
However, Chester is in better condition than I remembered when I last played a few years ago. The teeboxes are nice and flat, the fairways are decent, and the greens are running pretty well and not as bumpy as the other muni courses in the vicinity....and the sand in the bunkers looks new and fluffy.
Overall, not a bad experience. Finished in 4.5 hours on a Saturday morning. I could see the later groups were definitely playing slower.

Took advantage of a sweet deal $29.50 for morning golf (teed off at 8:30/9:00a) with another twosome. Finished just after 12pm. PACE of Play was a blistering 3 1/2 hours! Not bad for a weekday golf and the rate was pretty darn good to include the cart as well. Thanks Golfzing.com! Found out later that greens at Chester were sanded. I mean it was like frosting on a donut, it was thickish, and played havoc with ball speed. Towards the back 9 they were raking the greens with a cart and screen so then the greens were fluffy. I can understand what they are trying to do which is speed up the greens. Just wish I had known. Greens were receptive but slow. Sand dressing did funny things to the ball roll as it slowed down where the sand was dense and speed up where sand was sparse. The work though is for the good of the course. If you want fast greens this is what they do to make them harder and speedier. Still pace of play was fast. Tee boxes were flat. Sand in bunkers are stocked with nice white sand. A lot of the changes to the course really add another dimension to it. By placing the bunkers within the traditional landing spots it was... interesting. fairways are in good shape just a few bare spots. Same thing with the rough, it's a mixed bag of thick grass or hard pan. Take your pick. Overall I think the course will turn out well especially if hotter weather will come to the South Bay. At the moment it's been overcast so not a lot of growth is to be expected from their work. Mileage will vary here but the course looks to be shaping up. I would think about playing here again in a few more days after the sanding takes hold.
