Played today on 08-22-13. Went off at 2pm and made good time on the front 9 but got bogged down and crawled on the back.

Tee boxes are in real good shape for an LA muni. Fairways are also in real good shape for an LA muni. Rough can be tricky. It's thick and clumpy in some areas. The greens had some foot traffic damage but that was expected for the afternoon time. The greens were also pretty decent though and rolled medium. My only complaint, as it was the last time I reviewed ole Chester, was these bunkers are terrible. They're firm and have only the thinnest top layer of dirt. Please oh please steal some sand from a preschool sand box to add some depth to these poor things. Definitely no possibility to play any explosion shots here.

Haven't posted in a while. Had a chance to play this on Father's Day (6/16/13/) with my dad, brother and brother-in-law. Arrived 15 minutes ahead of our 2:00pm tee time and were fortunate enough to get on right away. Was pleasantly surprised that the course was so open as the group in front of us were at least 3-4 holes ahead and the single playing behind us were 2 holes behind. Managed to play the whole round in 3:45 even with my brother and brother-in-law hacking away. Great times!

As for the conditions, it can't get better than it is right now. I say for the 3 or 4 times I've played this course so far this year, this must have been the best playing conditions the course had to offer. Fairways and rough were lush with minimum bare spots. Sand boxes were nice and fluffy. My only gripe would be the greens and tee boxes and that's not even the course's fault. People need to fix their divots. I must have had to fix 4-5 per green.

Good mix of easy and difficult holes. Well maintained for a muni. Lot of elevation change for a course in the middle of a city. Recommend if you never played it, gotta try it out.

Some of you may not like how I characterize the course to those I say "Tough!" This is how I saw it and how it played out for me. All this is subjective so you can either take my words with a grain of salt or hold it as gospel. The choice is yours.

Greens in decent shape. One green (9) I believe was a bit thin and 10 was bumpy but overall the ball held it's line and the speed was moderate at best. Fairways are lush. Rough is thick and sticky almost two ball deep in places. Sand in bunkers are OK perhaps a little more sand but overall decent shape. Tee boxes are flat and lush.

Pace of play was just around 4 hours. Would have been faster but we were the last group before twilight and had one or two groups ahead of us.

Best wishes to Terry and Mark (GM) who are moving on to bigger and better things. Good luck to Chris (AGM at Westchester) and Jack the incoming GM and Super respectively. I am sure they will do some great things with the place. As I told both Mark and Chris, there are two places I enjoy playing only because the playing conditions are consistent and the POP decent -- Westchester and Chester Washington.

POP; Horrible. Structrual problem w/2nd hole leads to for sure backup. 1.5 hrs to walk off 5th tee. Guys I joined ambled more than strided- we were about a 1/2 hole behind but would have still finished in 5 hrs instead of 5.5 for such an early tee time.

Greens: Good - not mowed. Will punch this week.

Fairways: Great. Full, green, no brown spots, good lies.

Rough: Long & Juicy. Penalty.

Bunker: In none- looked like not much sand.

Course has some strong par 4's. Have now opened up real blue tee on 4th P3.

Good value-wide open so you can really bomb away, but pace will push this down off Sat am rotation.

Played twighlight on 3/8. You get the usual from this course, the tee boxes are inconsistent ranging from almost no grass to lush, depending on which tees you play from. The fairways are very playable, and the rough is inconsistent as well. The traps are still the worst I've seen in maybe not just LA county, but all of California. Put some sand in them, please. The greens were bumpy and slow. I was warned by the kid at the desk that the course recently slowed them down to increase pace of play. Well, they succeeded in slowing them down, but they were awful to putt on. POP was still slow even without there being many groups on the course. Walked it in about 4:45.

Pace of Play was slow. I blame the group ahead. Would have been smarter to play two threesomes instead of one 4-some following a 2-some. But hey that's a judgement call. We finished 9 holes in around 3 hours. The real kicker was hole 9 which was 4 groups deep; waiting to hit.

As for course conditions and I am sure you will agree (those of you that have played here), the greens are FAST. Tricky and fast; it's a vast improvement I have noticed with their consistent record. I have never seen the greens so... quick. Puts roll true so any deviation in that putter hitting the ball you will see almost immediately. Bunkers need a little more sand (i.e. hole 1 left greenside bunker). Fairways are lush. Rough is thick but playable. Tee boxes are interestingly thin. It appears they need some TLC. It's a shame considering all the work that went into the tee boxes. Greenskeeper/superintendent may need to consider punching the tee boxes to bring them back. They look/feel hard-packed.

Hats off for the crew for all things so far except for what I mentioned above which is not a lot and certainly playable. Keep up the good work and you will definitely get more business from other golfers not in the area.

Now would I play here again? Yes! Of course! With greens this fast they are a true test of your short game, skill and patience!

Played in a tournament here today, and had a great time. Like any course, when you have par 3 holes the tee boxes will be a little beat up, but you still have a lot of room to hit from. I didn't have any problems getting out of the three bunkers that I was in. Overall, another great round @ Chester.

Played 2/18 at 8am. I had read some decent reviews and decided to give this course a try for the first time. An earlier review mentioned level and lush new tee boxes. Those appear to only be the case for the white tees. Playing from the blues, I found most tee boxes to be bare with some grass. They were level, but at times you had to decide which was more important, teeing your ball on grass and standing on dirt, or teeing it on dirt so you could have better footing on grass. Fairways are decent for this time of year. Rough is very lush in some places and can be tough. Sand traps are raked and look nice, but are thin and just about unplayable. No explosion shots possible, and if you are short sided and need to hit a delicate sand shot, count on it flying long or even over the green (if you can get under it at all and not blade it). Greens were in decent shape as far as ball marks, but rolled much, much slower than the practice green and our 5some had trouble getting the ball to the cup on uphill putts all day long. Pace of play was slow at over 5 hours, but by walking the waiting wasn't unbearable. I did shoot one of my best scores in the last few months, so any negativity in this review is not from being bitter.
