I know I can sometimes prattle on in my reviews, but this one will be short. I can't imagine there is another course in the LA city (and probably county) system that is in better shape than Hansen Dam is right now. On top of that, went out today first twilight and got around in four hours. Want specifics? Look at the previous review for this course by member "Coldness". It's spot on. They are aerating on the 15th so if you are so inclined, you better hurry over there!

Played Hanson on Friday Sep 29. Started just after 1:15, was in the car at 5:00. Pace was obviously good. In general this course is looking really good, especially considering the amount of high heat days we have experienced in the valley. This course is in way better shape than any of the other LA City Muni's currently. I have played Wilson/Harding, Encino/Woodley all recently, and this course is in much better shape.

The tee boxes were in good shape, they are being rotated frequently, and did not experience any unevenness, or over use.

The fairways were in great shape, noticed some divots from general play, but overall the fairways were very green with just a few rare brown patches. The cut of the fairways is excellent, and I never once found my ball on a poor patch of grass unlike Harding.

The rough is also fairly lush, but not to penal. Also it is getting plenty of water, and is very green. The 2 bunkers that I was in had excellent soft sand. It was not the compact stuff that I have been seeing lately. Although I did not visit a fairway bunker which are usually the culprits for hard packed sand.

The greens were running fairly quick, as they always do at Hanson Dam. The condition was pretty good, they had some thin patches and some unrepaired marks, but that is normal. Overall the condition was very good, and not too hairy.

I see that the course is going to be punched in about 2 weeks. So if you like playing this course go get it now, the condition is not going to get any better than it is right now. I definitely enjoyed the round.

Played here this past weekend. Pace was okay because I got out early. Similar conditions to the post below.

The tee boxes have been in pretty good shape, with the par 3 exceptions. It seems everyone single player must take a 10 inch divot on them. The fairways here are excellent, very green just a few brown patches on 2 of the holes that were marked ground under repair, very few divots in the fairways overall.

The rough here has been cut down and is very forgiving, some holes it is thicker but nothing to penal. I have heard they are keeping it shorter to keep pace of play down. Overall the rough is lush and not too spotty.

The greens here are still in excellent shape, with few ball marks and rolling very smooth. They continue to be some of the faster greens in my opinion out of the LA muni's. Overall the course is in good shape for being mid-July with the heat starting to set in. Definitely worth the green fee if you play the right time of day.

Posting this review late. Played here for the very 1st time on Sat 6/23. Based on previous reviews and word-of-mouth, got there super early to avoid crowd & potential slow play. Was paired with a two-some (I walked course while 2-some carted). Teed-off @ 6:45am from Blues. Walked off 18 @ approx 10:50am. 4 hrs was SOLID pace, IMO. Greens fee = $40 (L.A. resident walking rate)

Tee Boxes - 3.25 stars. Mostly lush & level. There were several instances where box was "semi" beat up w/divots (basically the typical par-3 holes). But overall & being a muni, very nice boxes.

Fairways – 3.50 stars. This was an absolute pleasant surprise to me. Consistenly lush & well groomed. Could not recall seeing any brown spots. Not too many divots & when noticed, was filled w/sand. These traits are particularly impressive considering its a city muni located in the super hot part of the valley. FW just short of excellent in my book.

Rough - 3.25 stars. Avg length between 1-1.25 inches. Some parts thin. But overall, not really penal & easy to get out of.

Bunkers - 3.25 stars. Lucky to not find any bunkers (esp being a newbie to course). The 2-some found a couple of times. When watching them hit out, sand seemed a little on the “heavy” side.

Greens - 3.25 stars. Decently maintained. Not too marked up. Nice in color. Roll was mostly smooth w/a couple bumps here & there. And even playing early morning, greens were firm & medium-fast, IMO.

Challenge - 3.50 stars. Definitely not “football field” wide like Woodley. But its still fairly wide (comparable to Encino & Balboa). Trees not really a concern until you reach the back 9. But the back is still wide IMO. The challenge, really, is in the elevation changes and greens. For a muni, I find it to be a nice.

Overall experience – 3.50 stars. When I play LA City courses in the valley, I usually rotate between Woodley, Encino, & Balboa. I’m now gonna throw Hansen Dam into the mix. It was truly a pleasant round. I hear that pace-of-play can be an issue. But it wasn’t for me. And the drive is only an extra 15 min north. It’s a well-maintained course and definitely a better/different challenge compared to Encino & Balboa. Not as long as Woodley. But still plenty long.

Played Sun 6-17-12. Tee'd off super early 5:50, to beat the sunday crowds. The pace of play was a little over 4 hours, but was never pushed and never waited on anyone. The line up on hole 1 must have been over an hour by the time we finished. Which seems to be typical on Sundays.

The tee boxes on the course were mostly good, a few were uneven, and several of the par 3s were quite beat up. The fairways were in excellent shape, very green and no severe damage or bareness on any of the holes.

The rough is hit or miss on some of the holes. It can be thick and lush on one side of the hole, but anywhere there are trees the grass is non-existent. You pray your ball isn't covered in mud if you hit towards some of the trees.

The green side bunkers were in good shape, the few I visited had decent fluffy sand. The greens here always seem to run faster than they look, and several have the phantom break away from the dam.
Overall it was a good morning, and this course is very forgiving with wide fairways that you shouldn't miss. Its a good track for the cost usually, and a good place to work on your long game.

Played Sunday, off at 9:36. As always it is a little slow for the first two holes. The pace picked up and then slowed at the turn. We finished in about 4.5 to 5 hours. The greens are in great shape; they were lush, soft, medium fast speed, and no ball marks or damage. A couple of my playing partners found some bumpiness, but it was not bad. Tees, fairways, and rough were all in good shape. Leaves and debris was being raked by the grounds crew, most notably along the left side of 10 in the trees. The weather was in the low 80's and it felt a little humid. The prime time resident rate on Sunday to ride is $52, which I find a little steep. Non-residents can expect to pay $5 more. Ouch.

Played Thursday (5/17) as a 4 ball and had a good time. The course is in good shape. Greens med/fast and smooth, fairways and rough good. The sand I can't tell you because I wasn't in one but they look good. A very good four hour walk. T-time 6:48 and in the car by 10:50 Only had to wait on the first two holes.
