Played Harding for the first time yesterday. The course plays almost identical to the two Encino/Balboa tracks.

The tee boxes on the course were in quite shabby shape. They were pretty badly scarred up, on about 80% of the holes. Some were almost completely bare of grass.

Fairways were really hit or miss. Some were very clean and lush. Others had lots of brown burned out spots. Some areas as large as 10 or 20 yards wide. These areas were in play on some of the holes as well, which really made it a shame. The rough on some holes was level and full, and plenty green. Other holes it looked like the rough had not been watered in weeks. Where it was brown and dried out. It was really a mixed bag.

The greens were in decent shape. You can tell that they are taking much better care of them, then the rest of the hole. They ran a bit quicker than you would expect, and there were only a few unrepaired ball marks on each hole.

Overall the course is very average conditions wise, but that is what you generally expect with the LA muni's. I hope to return and try out the Wilson course which is supposedly a much nicer course, but I hear it gets lots more play.

Played yesterday since I was in the neighborhood. Glad I did. This was my home course when I went to 'SC back in the day. And it's always my personal favorite compared to its longer sister course Wilson. Don't understand the appeal of a longer course because what Harding lacks in distance it makes up for in elevation changes, tough greens and great character. I suppose if you want to hit the ball long you can on this course but it requires more attention to placement and pin location that I personally enjoy. Also if you want a 6 hour round versus a 3 1/2 hour round we played as a TWOSOME ... then you can have Wilson... I will take Harding any day of the week including Leap Year Day.

Course conditions are typical muni. Greens however rolled very true without bumps. A little slow but when the course started to warm up the balls were rolling fairly quick with medium speed. A well struck put held its line and you could read the greens fairly easily. Fairways had bare in spots with dormant or dried out grass but still playable. Green complexes especially around the green were well maintained. It reminded me of Victoria GC but with better fairway grass. Tee boxes were flat and well rotated. Sand in bunkers good and well stocked. Pace of play was 3 1/2 hours. And we were walking. A lot of what I remember of the course that gave its character has been either removed or toned down. I miss that but the bones essentially are the same.

For $30 to walk and walk on with out a wait... I will take it any day. If you want to play hurry up and wait golf ... certainly play Wilson but if you want to play fast... LOL playing Harding should be a no brainer.

First time at this track. I was actually impressed, not so much for the condition but by the lay out and location. Nice course to play, some challenge but overall hacker friendly, So I was right in my enviroment. :-)
I would go back and try it again some day.

This is another course that I have not played in a while. I found the greens to be in the best shape I can remember. The rest of the course was not to shabby as well. Unfortunately, I will avoid city courses and play county ones instead. They have jacked up the prices just too much for non-LA-residents. Both the Harding and Wilson courses are wonderful settings for golf.

Played on 3-20-12, Twilight 2:12pm. Beautiful day, sunny, 70's. Not busy at all for a Tuesday, finished in under 4.5 hrs. Fairways were good for a muni, tee boxes were leveled and in good shape. The greens are really nice and fast today, lots of ball marks are not fixed. Otherwise not too much to complain about. Wouldn't play there on the weekend, too busy and over 6 hr round according to the 2some I was playing with.

We played Sunday, 2/27. We were the 3rd group out, and finished in under 4 hours. The course is in decent shape with the greens and greenside bunkers being the best thing about the course, and the tee boxes being the worst. The greens rolled very nicely with good speed. The tee boxes are kind of a mess with lots of bare patches and unevenness in many spots. The fairways are about what you would expect for mid-Feb on a muni. Harding is generally a fun layout with some interesting diverse holes.

If there's one good thing to say about this course it's that I've never seen the greens in better condition as they are now. The course itself is in it's typical muni condition from sooo much play it gets, but the greens have been rolling close to true. Very impressed. And of the two tracks in GP, I've preferred playing this track, not only because it gets less crowded than Wilson, but I think it has a bit more character and the finishing hole is quite a nice picturesque view from tee to green. I also have been loving that I can play this course in 3.5 hours (walking), as long I'm up before the roosters crow.

Probably the third or fourth group out today (6:12 a.m. teetime) as a threesome. Finished in 3:45. Greens are soft, and mostly real good except for a few ball marks and some really poorly repaired ball marks. Fairways were somewhat wet and thin in most areas. Rough was in decent shape, although there were some bare areas under and near trees. Sand was inconsistent, but mostly okay. Tees are under maintenance for the most part. Most of them played forward and were overseeded. A lot of tees are not too level either. Course was soft from the recent rain, but did play nicely. It is good to get out early here, otherwise it can be a long round.
