Headed back to Harding this weekend for the first time in a spell. Got a cart and played from the blue tees for a $56 greens fee. We had an 11:20am tee time and got paired with a nice young gentleman to complete our foursome.

Didn't have any range time but there is still a food truck over by the first tee for Wilson. Putting green in front of the clubhouse still closed for some reason.

Front nine still showing signs from aeration and had some sand on the greens as well. Not sure when they switched but don't remember seeing any of that on the back nine where the greens were in good shape, rolling true and medium-fast speed. Held shots quite well.

Fairways are in good, not great condition. Very playable and you'll even find some lush areas, but mostly thin/just enough. The rough is not penal and plays nicely. Bunkers were somewhat crusty and had lots of bumps and depressions, so it was mandatory to move any shots in there to a flatter area. Tee boxes were in good enough shape in terms of being level, but not great coverage.

POP was really good with the groups moving very nicely and came in at just over four hours, even though it seemed like longer. Was really wishing for more holes when we got to 18!

I still prefer Harding's fun layout to Wilson's, but that's just personal preference. I always just love also being in the Griffith Park area, only this time we did not see any deer or coyotes anywhere on the course. Really fun closing par 5 as well, but the rest of the course is quite pleasant too. When all the greens are healed up and maybe get a little bit of rain, this track will be back in optimum shape in no time.

I played with Kevin (t8fish) and his buddies Pete and Nathan last Friday afternoon. Good walking rate of $32. No putting greens were open and no cash or AMEX card accepted at check in; IMO this is bs, but that's another story. All in all, a really nice afternoon of golf and we finished about 30 minutes before it got dark. Pace was all on us as we did not wait on any shots.

Greens: 6/10: The greens rolled medium fast with some perceptible bumpiness only occasionally. They were fairly firm and there were very few ball marks to be repaired. I found that you had to be careful with your chips and pitches to keep the ball on the dance floor.

Fairways and rough: 6/10: Good rollout on the short grass and decent lies all around. The grass coverage was good and mowed to a consistent height. Not wet at all and really easy to hit from.

Tees: 6/10: They were level and had ample amounts of turf coverage. We played the white tees and they were in good condition; from my recollection, I saw no issues with the other tees.

Bunkers: 6/10: I was in at least one bunker and it appeared to have decent sand; it was fairly easy to hit from despite it really having a hard pan under and inch and a half of loose sand. No rakes, so finding an area that did not have footprints was just a matter of luck.

Overall, I like this course; I have many good memories here. I haven't played here since August 2018, so it was nice to come back. I can recommend it.

Got out Friday 2/19 with a 12:40 start as a foursome playing the whites, with the first green cleared by the time we actually teed off. I was pretty pleased with the conditions. I don't recall any issues with any tee boxes as to being level or finding a green spot to peg it, and the coverage was short and tight. Similarly, the fairways had pretty good coverage and lies as winter goes, and there was the commensurate seasonal roll out. On the whole the rough was well covered, not long, and very playable. If you got too far off line, you were more likely to have problems with location (trees, etc.) than lie. The greens' surrounds were occasionally a bit lumpy but the ball sat up more than down on the springy grass, while occasionally it was tighter. I found good results pitching and chipping with the one really bad chip being pilot error. I passed through at least one bunker but never ended up there. They looked OK as to sand quantity and firmness, and my playing partners seemed to have decent results from them. The greens were quick, firm, usually with a slope element in play, and I enjoyed the challenge and pace. Of course on a muni, it's the straight putts that will break your heart. Regardless of how well it seems to be tracking, you never know if the putt will hold the line until the actual hole-out but really, they were pretty clean. I'd guess the pace was something around 4.25 hours. Catching one of the few days this past week that wasn't blustery, the weather was perfect — sunny, shorts-warm, no more than a one-club breeze at most all day, and no wind by the last few holes. I got up early nine days in advance to get the booking and the group that finally assembled was excellent company. I checked my ScoreTracker to find i hadn't played here since late 2019. I like the course and enjoyed getting back to it. Thanks to Kevin (kviser), Pete and Nathan for their company. It was good day.

With nothing to do Saturday and decent tee times hard to come by, I was scouring several sites Friday evening in hopes of something popping up. Eventually around 10pm a 10:30 tee time for Harding at Griffith Park was available, so I snatched it and played there today. $42 to walk. Arrived a little before 10:00, tried to check in but they told me they’ll call me 10 minutes prior to my time. All the practice greens are closed and roped off with yellow “crime scene” tape, so there’s not much to do if you don’t want to go hit balls on the range. This results in lots of people standing around outside the clubhouse, and it seems to me they’d be more spread out if they were able to use all the practice areas. (Having them closed does prevent non-players from showing up to practice putting, though.) I was paired with a threesome and we started pretty much on time, maybe a few minutes late. We waited on the group in front of us all day, and things got a little backed up on the 18th tee, but overall pace wasn’t too bad for here. I think we finished in about 4:50, and it seemed quicker than that to me. Conditions are decent. Thankfully, the greens are the highlight. For the most part, they ran medium-fast to fast and accepted full shots well. They were a little bumpy in places and some greens have some slight bare spots around the edges, but overall pretty good. Aside from a little bit of spotty coverage, fairways are actually not too bad either. The turf had more cushion than I expected for this time of year. Rough was a little more hit or miss, but where there is grass, it wasn’t too penal. Tee boxes were in mediocre condition, inconsistent from hole to hole but always somewhere to put the tee in grass. I was in one bunker and the sand was pretty thin, but not too bad. I hadn’t played Harding for about 25 years, so it was nice to get back. Recommended if you can get a tee time. After the morning cloud cover burned off, it was a beautiful, partly cloudy day with only slight breezes and temps around 65-70. Pretty much ideal.

Played Sunday morning, 11-15. We teed off on time (8:30), and we had no POP issues. Only waited on the par 3's on the back 9 and no one pushed us from behind. Finished in a leisurely 4:15. Fairways are somewhat thin with hardly any plush lies but good enough if your tee shots were decent. Bunkers were ok with enough sand so that I was able to play my normal bunker shot. Greens had some signs of the last aeration but didn't affect the putting; speed was medium. Some tee boxes had hardly any grass but still manageable. Approaching winter conditions but nothing drastically bad to leave any bad taste.

Played yesterday, 9/12. Teed off on time at 7am with no issues. Pace of play was like most courses are right now: great! We didn’t really wait on any holes. The course is in pretty good shape considering the heatwaves we’ve had the last several weeks. Fairways had good coverage and the rough was definitely penal. Greens were receptive and rolled at a decent pace. I played Wilson a few weeks ago and thought the conditions at Harding weren’t as good but still worth the $47 green fee (walking). I wish the tee times were a little easier to get at these munis as I feel they’re the best in the area.

Played Sunday, 9/6, at 6:50 am. Agree about the funky check-in Covid precautions. One person at a time in the shop which turned out to be two people at a time because they had two people working registers. A lot of people hanging out in front waiting to check in with nothing to do because the putting and chipping areas are still closed. The food truck was open and operating though which was a pleasant surprise that early in the morning. For whatever reason, the halfway house on the course was not open although we went by it before 9:00. Hopefully, considering the expected heat, it opened sometime that day.

We played in less than four hours, waiting on the group in front of us on most shots but a good enough pace to make it not worth complaining. Sad to say there were three open holes behind us at the end so no one else the rest of the morning played that fast. The starter seemed surprised when informed of the gap on our way out.

I was pleasantly surprised with the conditions. In my experience, Harding usually cuts down their rough in the summers. Not so this year. That stuff was thick and lush. I found a few extra balls looking for wayward balls. The fairways were excellent in general. The greens were also nice, running a bit faster than medium. The tee boxes have thick kikuyu so it was harder on par threes to find a thinner spot to put in a tee, otherwise nothing to complain about.

Highly recommended right now.

Check in is such a hassle at Griffith. I understand the Covid and all, but the check ins are vastly
different between the courses over the city and counties, some you can putt, some you can hit balls others you cant make eye contact. Hopefully, things will go back to normal soon.

Hit the first tee for the usual Harding.

Course was in good shape although there was a lot of water throughout the fairways. Like that
nasty soggy and some were mixed in with old tire marks so that makes it more helpful to play.
Again, its hot and it gets too dry people will complain so I guess they're stuck as well.

Tee boxes are hit and miss. Some are fine and others are so hard you'll look like an 1800's railroad worker trying to put a tee in.

The rough is the rough at GP and around the greens is just so tough, the kikuyu is super
tricky when it gets warm out there. It looks fluffy and fun then Boom! Your club head disappears in the abyss of two chips, duffed shots or bladed glory.

Sand traps, I was only in the 15th's sand. The one on the right sucks. Not a little but a lot. Its sorta like sand and sorta like soft dirt, like they used up the good sand on Wilson and left the balance of gopher dirt in the trap.

Greens. They were fine and medium speed. They rolled well and the breaks were mild, a couple of challenging pins but whatever.

Harding is in good shape just a little water logged in spots. POP was good we finished in 4h15m

Harding is in really nice condition. The fairways are good with some dry spots but its also
California in the middle of summer. The rough around the greens is a killer. Again, the Kikuyu
makes look like its the fluffiest lie then before you know it you'll TC Chen the hole. The rough around the greens is just frustrating at times. Also, not missing greens could solve this problem.

Greens, the greens were nice and smooth today. even later day foot traffic the greens were nice, Its funny to see the big difference between Harding and Wilsons greens. Harding looked more for the taking yet the breaks were so subtle and confusing.

Excellent day for golf and another solid round in the books.
