Played our GK Cup 13 first-round matches at Lakewood on Sunday and the course is doing just fine as summer finally begins. If your expectations are not out of whack, what you'll get here is a solid round of testing golf with nice conditions that will work for any golfer.

Greens are in very good shape actually. A few too many ball marks for sure, but the speed and consistency of the roll is very good right now. Very receptive to approach shots as well, and even consistent throughout the day.

Fairways are maybe not the most green you'll see around SoCal right now, but the surface is very playable no matter what color it looks like, and you're also going to find a lot of good lies. Sure, there are some thin spots, but overall you should be quite satisfied. Rough is not very penal at all so worries to go just off fairways a bit.

Bunkers were in working shape with no major complaints at all. Tee boxes had some damage from overuse but were mostly level and functional. POP was definitely a surprise because we were actually having a lot of fun with our foursome of Kassper7, Mrkich and USCDodger, but we finished in a little over five hours, so that was not optimal.

Good, challenging yet fair layout at Lakewood that is a good option to play right now if you don't want to play Skylinks prices for quality golf in the LBC.

Played today, 6/23 at 7:32am. POP was a shade under 5 hours. Par for the course here. A buddy and me paired with a two some that was part of the Men’s Club. Gotta say that Lakewood is in fine shape right now. Tees mostly flat with not too much divot damage. Fairways were nice. Cut thin, so decent roll out, but still enough turf for some cushion and spin on well struck shots. Rough was ok. Some parts were shin-high and nasty. Some where light and not too penal. Bunkers were in good shape with decent sand. Greens were pretty receptive, and rolled true. Not too bumpy either; rolled pretty nice. Down-hillers were quick as usual here, but again, they rolled nicely. Highly recommend right now.

Played Saturday, April 27, early morning. Pace of play was only okay, but more on that later. We had six guys for two tee times, but apparently no waiting list as we went off as two threesomes.

The course is in good shape. Was worried about the greens but they are fully healed, although they were relatively slow. Rolled nice, just not with the usual pace. The rough is cut down. The fairways were full. I had to laugh when one of our players complained there was more sand than he was used to in the bunkers. If they cut the greens as usual, the course is going to be better than most in this area.

Now, on POP. We waited on every shot the first two holes, playing behind two foursomes that we could see. On the third hole, the par three, we joined up into a sixsome and played the round in 4.5 hours, still waiting on every shot except the two par 5s on the back. We had an open hole behind us from the 5th hole on. They caught us on 12, then we opened up that hole gap again. There was at least 1.5 holes open in front of the group two groups in front of us, as there was no one on the par 5 14 when they were in the fairway on 13 (we could see it standing waiting on the 12th tee). The group in front of us stayed about a half shot behind, only waiting on the par 3s. I would have been embarrassed if I were in a foursome (three riders) with a sixsome (all walking) waiting on our every shot. Final part of the rant, it is on the course that we never saw a marshal questioning why there was a sixsome playing early on Saturday or any time for that matter. Would have been nice to see one pushing the groups in front to keep up the pace. Not to mention on the fivesome behind us, all riding, that could not keep up.

Played 4/23, in excellent shape, still a few ducks around, couts are gone, pace was terrible, no marshall, 5 1/2 hours, no wave ups on par 3's.

Lakewood Friday morning, 5-some but things weren't all that bad cuz it was a polite group of good guys. PoP around 4:15 with no waiting ... just wasn't crowded early. Surprisingly dry as all the standing water has evaporated and fairways/greens have firmed up considerably. Only well struck irons would check up and chip shots would run 5-10' past the hole which took a while to get used to. Bunkers have good sand and were not maintained today ... footprints from inconsiderate golfers were a disappointment, for sure. Marshal out enforcing today, good to see. Scheduled to aerate the first week of April but should be sooner. Good, inexpensive golf and a test from the tips.

Got in an argument with a guy who tried to sneak into the mix as well. Just awful, such people.
NO MARSHALL out there despite all the pace of play issues. I will not return as a result.
We started an hour before twilight, in the morning. ANd did not finish. Unacceptable.

On to Lakewood on a Friday morning, walking rate of $30 a pretty good deal as roarksown1 mentioned in his review last month. We played it LC&P and it was CPO for the riders which really slowed down some of the seniors who like to play early (but should not). The slow 5-some ahead of us allowed us to play thru on #12 so that was nice of them. Front was 2.5 hrs PoP and the back was 1:45.

Lots of standing water in the bunkers which was getting pumped out and some puddles, but overall the conditions were green and full in the fairways ... the rough is always hit or miss. Greens were cut so they rolled nice and true (mostly) and were uber-soft due to the recent rain.

No frills golf at a decent price. Flat, walkable course that plays long when it's wet. Recommended.

Truly one of the best values in SoCal, played a very fine Lakewood CC on Sunday and was not disappointed in the least. For $40 walking on a Sunday morning, this is a steal.

Truly one of the best values in SoCal, played a very fine Lakewood CC on Sunday and was not disappointed in the least. For $40 walking on a Sunday morning, this is a steal.

The course is in very good shape actually with very nice looking fairways, thick but non-penal rough, excellent sand in the bunkers (perhaps too much fluff?), and quality greens right now that roll true and hold shots very well.

I was very surprised after playing some other comparable courses this weekend that Lakewood was far and away the best of the bunch. Even with the warm temperatures and lack of any rain lately, it's still in some of the best shape I've ever seen it and I would not hesitate to go back and play it again soon.

Layout has a nice mixture of holes but there's not one single elevation change on the entire course. If you love elevated tee boxes or downhill par 5s, this is not the place for you. But if you want very nice conditions at an incredibly affordable rate, then make the call.

POP wasn't even too bad for the day coming in at just under five hours on a Sunday. Cart service popped up 2-3x as well which was great as I did not see any water stations and it was a pretty hot day yet again. Overall? Great value and a very good course to play right now.

Played Lakewood yesterday with an 8:00 tee time for 5. We teed off right on time and finished in 4.5 hours walking with almost no waiting. The course is in pretty good shape overall. A few tees were chewed up, a few bunkers were being repaired, and the fairways were very payable. We all thought the greens were very nice running semi fast smooth and held shots well. We haven't played here in quite a while so it was nice to see the remodeled restaurant and clubhouse. We stayed for lunch and it was nice sitting on the patio overlooking the course and the food was decent. Our only gripe was the duck poop on a number of greens which i am not sure if the course can do anything about. With many courses doing maintenance at this time i would recommend giving Lakewood a try.
