For LA muni golf, can't get much better than the Long Beach courses right now. Lakewood, El Dorado, & Skylinks are all great right now. Played Lakewood today, with Kassper7 for our Round 4 Semi-Final GK Cup match. 4:20 POP which was great! I was assuming a 5 hour round, and was pleasantly surprised. Course is in overall great condition. Still working on some construction to the clubhouse, but the new range and new bag drop are built. Looks great! Really impressed. The tees are prob the worst part of the course. A lot of them are beat up, lots of divots, but still playable. I think only 1 or 2 are sloping and not level, but the rest are ok. Fairways are lush with decent coverage. Bad spots here and there, but overall nice lies. Rough is hit or miss - but very playable. Patchy in some spots, and just as good as the fairway in others. The bunkers were hit/miss. Some good, some hard packed, some even had standing water. But still ok overall. The greens where in great shape. Some "mean" pin placements weren't appreciated, but they rolled smooth, medium-fast speed, and held well struck shots. Overall good shape and I'd recommend.

Walking single at the Wood on a Friday morning, paired up with a good group of regulars, we got around in 4:20 with waiting on the backside ($31, I believe). Course in very good muni condition, tee to green, well worth the green fee. It can get real slow here if you tee of later, especially on a Friday.

Greens were the best part of this review as they were rolling true at medium speed, very good Poa and only a few ball marks to fix. Kikuyu fairways and rough (with some other grasses thrown in for good measure) are mostly full with a few unmarked bare areas and color ranging from dark green to tan. Never had a bad lie in the fairway but the rough can be tough, somewhat patchy to full and penal depending on your rub.

Disappointed that the bunkers aren't kept as well as I've witnessed in the past, mostly damp and some standing water in some. Not maintained today, some raked and some not (careless people).

And the driving range is OPEN. Mats only and the balls are those low compression type that go about 10-15 yards less than expected, but everything looks nice. Construction continues now on the clubhouse.

I'd recommend L'Wood as an affordable muni that can give a challenge to the average golfer. Various tee boxes make it playable for seniors who've lost some distance. It ain't no country club, just decent golf.

Played the Woods yesterday afternoon as a walk on single around noon. Supposed to be windy per forecast but turned out to be pretty nice and sunny. Played with 2 other older single players and had a good time without waiting much and any of the holes. POP was right at 4 hours. Conditions were pretty decent for a muni. Tee box were level, fairways had decent coverage with few brown spots but very playable. Rough were long in some areas and short in others but lucky to have any roughs in some muni courses so no complaints here. Green were punched probably a month or so ago and although you can still see punch marks, it was fine and rolled nice except for some bobble and bumps but very playable. Greens probably needs cutting and rolling and should be nice in 1 week. We are blessed to have fantastic weather in Socal and yesterday was no exception. Probably 5 to 10 mph breeze to keep us cool from the bright sun. I would play the woods again.

Everything apart from the bunkers was really solid. Greens were rolling true and well. Fairways had really nice kikuyu coverage for the vast majority of the playing surfaces with just some divot damage to report. Rough was hit and miss, which is the norm here. Some good spots and some definite bare dirt and "nesty" spots as well. Tee boxes were all pretty level with some club gouges on the par 3s that needed some filling. Bunkers were thin and crusty, not a great combo.
POP was right around 5 hours, which is pretty normal here.
Very much worth the normal rack rates here and a very flat walking course.

Played here yesterday for the first time in a long time. With many courses punching their greens right now I noticed on GK that Lakewood did theirs in early March so I thought they should be healed by now. I was right. The greens were in great shape and so is the rest of the course. Sure there are many courses more pleasing to the eye with more attention to details out there but for for $30 to walk this place is a good deal and this course plays long especially the par threes at 180, 230, 225, and 180 from the blues! Overall I would rate the tees,fairways,rough,and bunkers 6 out of 10 and the greens a solid 8..........

Went out to Lakewood on Sunday as a single walk on. Was the 4th group out following a slow 5 some. They let us through after the 5th hole and never waited on a shot. I have not played Lakewood in a long time and was surprised at how well the course was looking. Tee boxes were level, fairways were green and the ball sat up on shots. The rough was really easy to hit out of, it was not penal since it looked like it had been cut before. Greens ran smooth and medium fast on downhill putts. The pro shop guy said they had just smoothed it in the morning. Putts rolled smooth and kept their line. if conditions are like it was on Sunday, i will wake up early again and play. In regards to pace, the only way to play here sub 4 .5 hours is to play very early as it looked like there was a crowd forming on the first tee around 7.

Lakewood today (Sat.), $40 walking, PoP at 4.5 hrs w/8:40AM tee time, on time. Course has dried out nicely. For the most part, the greens have recovered from aeration but still a bit bumpy Poa, medium speed today with a sandy texture. Held all shots. Fairways green and easy to play from, some thin areas. Rough full and thick. Bunkers very good sand and well conditioned. Will rate it higher once the greens are back to normal. Not a tough course, it's flat and mostly generous fairway widths, but can play a bit long from the tips for sure. Need a strong driver or you'll be hitting long irons and hybrids to the greens. Driving range still under construction with an October estimate completion date. Excellent short game practice area. Lot's of geese doing their Spring dance looking for a partner. Good muni golf for a decent price. Recommended.

Quagmire. Morass. Pretty darn wet. Played lift clean and place but at times was hard to find a spot without casual water to hit it. Some of the tee boxes, including #1, felt my feet sink into the "grass" as I settled in for my shot. They obviously had not had a chance to mow so the fairways were shaggy. There were pools of water in many sand traps and in some all the sand had washed down to the bottom, leaving steep hard walls. The greens were pretty good. They rolled well even with the footprints. Slower than normal though.

The course played really, really long because of the conditions.

It looked like a holiday weekend out there. As I was getting my clubs out of the car, I saw a guy walking out with his clubs and getting in his car. Obviously a single that could not get on. It was packed for early morning. We had a 7:30ish tee time and started half hour late. POP 5 hours.

I had a good time out there, fun group of guys and competitive golf. It was not easy to enjoy at times though considering the conditions.

Played 1/8/2017 with a 5 some. Tee'd off at 7:40 and POP right at 5 hours - about as expected.
Course is in decent shape, except for the muddy conditions. I guess it doesn't drain well.

Bunkers - hit or miss. Some filled with water, others with fluffy sand.
I really like the layout, even though it is one of the longer courses, 6800+ yards. The conditions were still decent for winter and recent rains. We played lift, clean and place and it seemed fine. Greens were really soft, holding 5 woods on the long par 3's.

When it's not wet and muddy, this is one of favorites in the Long Beach area.
