Sunday 10/21/18, 12:30pm tee time for us three. Nice day, maybe less than 5 mph wind, high 70s temp and it was a clear blue skies- couldn’t be a better day on a golf course.

The staff and the beverage cart were good and did their normal services as they pleased the patrons and guests.

It’s almost been a month since they’ve aerated the greens with the new process- looks like a big rounded cut but the core was left in- no holes. Then they’ve sanded the greens heavily. But as of today, the have not cut the greens low enough to make it smooth nor roll fast- the greens are wobbly and bumpy. One of our guys said, not too, too, bad, then retracted and said, not good either- which was more accurate descriptor. The fairways were a little on a soggy side. A number of fairways were reseeded and it’s cart paths only on those holes: #1, 9, 10, 15, & 17 (check the pro shop for accuracy of those holes). So those fairways are a
Bit hairy, but they’re coming around. I’m guessing in a week or so, they’ll be cutting.

The bunkers were fine, they had new fine sand in it. The teeing grounds were good and lush- some were also reseeded. The rough is up! ...and they’re lush- I hope they cut it soon. I’ll give it a couple of weeks before it gets good again.

The driving range is mats only on Monday through Wednesday and on soggy wet muddy grass on Thursdays through Sunday. Actually, I’d wait about another four weeks before I play it again.

A buddy and I played here today, teeing off early at about 6:45 and finishing in 3 hours. We had vouchers from GroupGolfer.com and rode for $32 each. A couple of groups let us by and it was clear sailing. The front nine greens were in better shape and fully healed from aeration, whereas the back nine greens showed some residual evidence of aeration, but putted okay. Fairways were good with nice grass coverage everywhere. Rough was variable in coverage; sometimes thick and sometimes thin. Some of the grass bunker features were a bit scraggly, but overall the course played nice. I was in three bunkers, all of which were nicely groomed, but one was still wet and packed. Tees were mostly good, but a couple had some uneven ground. Not terrible as you could easily find level. Good times and great pace of play.

I got out today on a GroupGolfer deal, paying about $34 a month or two ago. Although the parking lot looked somewhat full, it was almost clear sailing, teeing off at about 11:30 and finishing at 3:00. The check in was fast and efficient. You can bring your cart into the parking lot to grab your stuff, if that's what you like. I opted for the cart that came with the deal, but this is a very walkable course with just a few elevation changes throughout. It's very scenic with lots of nice views to be had of the nearby hills. There was a nice breeze today, but wind can be a big factor here. Often you will have some down-wind shots that fly like crazy, or have to hit punch shots into a stiff head wind. The course is in fine shape now: Greens were rolling true, medium-to-medium fast (about a 9 I would guess). I fixed a couple small ball marks, but the greens were very nice overall. The fairways and rough were in good shape. Only a couple of thin or bare areas in some of the rough way off the fairways, but good grass coverage most everywhere. I visited a few bunkers and they all had good sand (not too deep) and were nicely groomed. The tees (blue) were all basically level and had good grass coverage. I always enjoy this course and I think the maintenance crew is to be commended for their hard work. Get out there and golf it before aeration or wait a bit. I recommend it!

Played here on Sunday, Nov. 19. paid $32 on a Groupgolfer.com deal (after 10:30 on weekends). No range balls as their machine was inoperable, but I wasn't going to hit anyway. Got out between groups as a twosome when I was joined by another single on tee 1. Pace of play was about 4:15.

There was a small delay on the last hole when my playing partner did not wait until everyone was in their carts. From 245 yards he hit his 5 wood and it sailed to the right and hit the last guy walking to his cart. Dropped him like a rock. I don't think there was any permanent damage as this was a big boy and it hit off his chest. After all the finger pointing, yelling, cussing, and apologizing, I looked at the ball on the ground and asked my partner if he was playing a Titleist 1. He said he was done; I went back and played out with the group behind.

Aside from all that nonsense, I felt the course is currently in a rather good condition. Nice green fairways and rough. Nothing too tight in the fairways and nothing too severe in the rough. It was really nice to hit from most locations on the course with adequate turf under my ball. There were some bare areas on the left side of hole 13, but it's always been that way. I was not in any bunkers but they all looked great with glistening, white sand. Tees were mostly level and had very few divots. Good sand/seed/mulch mix in cart bottles and on tee boxes.

Greens were great overall. They rolled fast and smooth; they were soft enough to leave deep ball marks on high shots and well-struck shots would stick like glue.

It was a nice day overall, with cool temperatures and almost no wind or breeze. There had been a hard frost overnight, but by my tee time it was all good.

I played here yesterday morning on a voucher purchased from GroupGolfer.com ($32 riding). It was fairly busy for a Friday morning; maybe it's always like that here (not really knowing since it's been many months since I last played here). The good part: the grass is nice, green, and lush where they are growing it. Outside the fairways and immediate rough, it gets sketchy. Many years ago, there were grassy knolls between the holes. Then they shaved them all down and made large waste areas. Now, if you are off the fairway, you could be in anything from thick rough, grass bunkers, clumpy grass, or just plain dirt. It looks like they conserve water further from the fairways. That being said, the fairways and first cut of rough are lush. In some areas, too lush. There were more than a couple of areas in the fairways that were overly wet and not properly roped off, resulting in damage due to carts or mowers creating deep, muddy ruts. A couple of these were due to leaky sprinklers. Mostly, though, the fairways were very nice. Good coverage, green, and great to hit from. Good sand and mulch in the cart bottles. Bunkers were nicely raked and had good amounts of quality sand. Greens were very good; few ball marks, rolling medium fast and true. Pace of play was slow at about 4.5 hours. It was a nice day with slight breezes that varied in direction and speed from a gentle wind out of the east in the morning, to a somewhat stronger wind out of the northwest around noon, then back to a gentle southwest breeze in the early afternoon. Good times for $32!

Some spots on the course are mushy- over watered. I'm not happy. The large rain that poured over on the 9th didn't help. But on the other hand, if you want to see green, the course is green and lush and the rough are healthy.

New sand for the bunkers came in and are being applied.

Anyway, the greens are great and were getting nice and firm, but that's just a prep for aeration and it will be done in five days.

Hoping to play it once more before aeration.

They had a special $33 with cart starts at 12:00pm- slow day so I jumped into it. lots of twosome out so it played without delay. I paired myself with a guy on the tee who said he wasn't good and shot in the mid-high 70s. We kept up with each other's good speed in pace with the front twosome... lots of good holes! ...so fun!

The greens were good. It rolled nice- it's poa mix with bent at mid day so that tells you pretty much about it- some subtle inconsistency, not bad at all.

The teeing grounds were fine- there are many divots, but there are plenty of areas with grass to tee it on.

The fairways are real good- no mud ball, it runs pretty good, but not dried out. It's pretty lush and looks pretty good.

The rough isn't all that consistent in height and thickness so watch out for them- it's hard to find a ball in it at times.

Bunkers have sand- it looks good. 'Wasn't in it.

Overall, I was very pleased with the course's playing conditions.

I'll be ready to clear my desk again at it's moments notice!

Thursday, 11/10/16, my guys went out for 18 on another gorgeous day up here in the high desert area. A $30 round to walk.

The conditions here aren't much different from what I posted for the Saturday, 11/05/16 review so I'll get to what's different. The greens continues to get faster than the previous times we've been here, however, my friend and I noticed a slight discoloration on a few spots- it isn't a bad thing although as the ball slows down a slight noticeable wobble on the ball starts to happen. Again, it isn't a negative thing.

Today, I met the Superintendent and he was friendly to speak to and he entertained my question by asking how I liked the current course conditions. As I told him what I recently reported here in Greenskeeper.org , he dug in and asked what I cared for on a course. (Wow!) I was almost speechless, but I knew this was a golden opportunity to share with him some of my input. To make the long story short, he and I pretty much agreed that on the type of course and customer/players that the course have, the greens should be at about 10-11 and no faster nor slower, but smooth as silk as we both describe Hacienda cc's green. The bunkers' sand is in good quality and that it is also conditioned and not just dumped in and then leveled- we both agree with that. The one we don't agree as much are the rough. I wanted less height, he thinks it's okay and also a lot of the better players have voiced that in the committee, but he understands my point.

We then moved on as to why is the ball wobbly as it slow down to stop? His answer was that this week, they've started to cut back on watering after the new grass have rooted nicely and also the amount needed as we approach cooler months. But he assures that his course will be pleasurable to play on in just a few weeks as the grass adjust to the changing temps and as they apply what's needed for the winter play.

Just hope I did a satisfactory job in relaying this tid-bit and hope that you are as excited as I am in with what's ahead for this course in my little Q&A with the supper. I look forward to winter golf there and hopefully, I could report about a fabulous playing condition at this course.

Played yesterday with TheBigDog's birthday Bash; two groups going out at around 9:30-ish for $58 riding. That was the senior rate and slightly more than I would like to pay. I think the cart fee was $18 and I'm not sure we had a choice to walk or ride. I think it has been several years since I last played here and I like the way the course is maturing. A previous reviewer noted some poorly mowed fairway grass; I only saw that on hole 2 and it was not bad. Maybe one of their mower blade reels is out of adjustment. Everywhere else the fairways and rough appeared nice. Some areas of rough are thicker and more lush than others and can be challenging to hit from. This course is all fescue and plays nice. Greens were on the fast side, probably around a 10+. One green had some damage, but it was repaired with some hexagonal plugs and the pin was placed away from the damaged area. The tees, fairways, and rough were all in decent shape. Carts had bottles of sand/seed/mulch as did the par threes. POP just under 5 hours. We saw the beverage cart once, but did not purchase anything. It was a perfect day weather wise without any wind. I plan on coming back to play here more often as Santa Clarita has nothing this good.
