Even though this course is fairly "short" (6200 yards from blues) it plays a lot longer. Lots of uphill approach shots. Rough is very lush and thick. Especially on the back nine. Only complaint; they were in the process of mowing the greens, but there was no rhyme or reason to the order in which they were cut. So, 12 was freshly cut and perfectly true. 13-15 weren't and a little bumpy. 16 was cut and true. Etc., etc. Crowded, but played at a good clip for how crowded it was. Incredibly lush. I'm making it my home course.

The Hills just keeps getting better and better. Thank God the secret isn't getting out. Walked on at 12:30 today (Friday) and immediately hooked up with another player for a quick game. $24 and getting out immediately on a Friday afternoon?!! A refreshing change for south oc. Best conditions in Orange County right now. Everthing is lush. Just a few bare spots in fairways, but very minimal. Some standing water from the rain (cart path only); didn't matter. I walked. It's walkable, but there are some distances tween holes on the back nine. Even though it's fairly short (6200 yards), it is sneaky tough. Lots of difficult approach shots with tight pins right behind steep sand traps. A must play, but don't tell anybody!!:-)

Short course plays longer than 6200 yds. We played right after some serious rain (World Match Play just a bit south of here had to be cancelled b/c of huge puddles), but w/ this course draining so well, we only had to deal w/ the occassional casual water... much less than I would have suspected.

But the course has some of the most lush conditions in SoCal. This is a gem of a course. Balls sit up in fairway nicely if you find the short grass. Greens were soft b/c of the rain, but I suspect they're on the spongy side normally. Approach shots should hold easily. There are only a few memorable holes, but the moderate fees makes this layout a worthy place to play.

The last time that played this golf course the first Bush was in office and it was in such sad shape that I vowed to never play it again. This place is in top-notch shape. There are some “thin” spots is some low areas but for the most part the place is lush. The greens are hearty and smooth. Great root structure holds your line well and they are running at a fair pace. The rough is full and fair, especially around the greens. The bunkers are full of decent sand and are groomed nicely. The golf course is in the same shape as many of the local south county private courses. Here’s the best part, I had to stand around for 30 minutes to GET A GAME, no waiting list, very peaceful and quite. Great bar, great staff. All in all a very comfortable place to play and stay for lunch or a c%ck tail. The golf course is narrow and can be tougher then the 119 slope advertises.

All of the fairways were well manicured and tightly cut. Only negative is the tee boxes. Many of them are severely sloped. The secret is out. Very crowded. A must play.

There is a lot of good things to say about this course. While most 20-40$ courses have thin yellow grass, S.J. Hills has nice lush fairways and rough. The greens are also nice. Some unraked bunkers... Continue »

There is a lot of good things to say about this course. While most 20-40$ courses have thin yellow grass, S.J. Hills has nice lush fairways and rough. The greens are also nice. Some unraked bunkers and not level tee boxes are the only negatives about here. This course plays harder than the 69.5 116 ratings. Like with many hillside courses S.J.H. requires a great short game to score well. You will never get bored with the layout of this course.

Played 1-26-04 and the course is in the best shape I've seen in awhile. Last time I played there was about 6 mos ago and there is no comparison. Greens were just great! San Juan Hills is now a must... Continue »

What a beautiful course! From the first tee to the last tee and the entire course is lush green with beautiful velvet grass conditions.
The continuous maintenance observed even during play has made this a most beautiful, enjoyable and relaxing course.
The sand in the bunkers, should you hit in that region, is at the present very soft and deep. That should improve in the weeks to come.
A delightful change from the desert like browned out courses in Southern California.
