After reading the prior review from Gary00, decided to get back to Shorecliffs. Gary's review is spot on, with the greens being the best part of this course, although I must admit the overall condition has improved from the last time I played here. Caught a few poor lies in the fairways, but generally I have no real complaints.

This has never been one of my favorite courses, but the combination of the cost, the always friendly staff, relatively close to home, and truth is, there are several good holes on this course to offset some of the really bad ones. While I would not make a steady diet of this course, it's a nice change.

7/29 using GSC $24 voucher 715 start 90 min front 9 then joined up with another 2some on the back and slowed a little to finish in 3 1/2 total. Fairways have been getting more water and with the cool overcast ams the lies and conditions were quite good. More rough also present and i some places was nasty. There are still some thin and bare areas and squirrel damage none of which came into play for me today also did not find any bunkers but they looked ok in passing. Tees generally had good cover--some areas on the 3s had old divots but could find adequate area for the tee shot. Some tee box areas are not level but today for the most part not an issue today.
Greens were really good and consistent through the course rolled true--medium fast--contributing to a nice round of 24 putts with several made from 10 plus feet--only 1 birdie but several nice par saves. Stayed at 2 over thru 15 and started dreaming of shooting my age(73)--promptly went wide right all the way up to the rough on 15--tried a hero shot thru the trees--didnt work out-- ended up making a 20 footer for a triple. Still finished with a 78 --been a while since I saw this side of 80

7/20 using $24 Golf Southern Cal voucher on a pleasant 730 am tee off with an unhurried 345 POP. Fairways showing a little heat damage noticed a few more brown areas and some bare spots. Overall had decent to good lies with generally good cushion. A few unfilled divots especially on the "cart path only" holes--the sand bottle is really not that heavy--
Rough along most fairways and abundant around the greens--often long and juicy.
Some bunkers now have new sand--the really fine grain that requires acceleration and commitment. All the bunkers would benefit from more frequent grooming which was done almost daily in the past. Still all and all the traps are very playable just different from one to the other.
Tee boxes had good cover but still lack the level factor.
Greens are really good rolled smoothly medium fast. 6 foot of fringe and closely mowed approach areas give the option of putt or chip--but 2 inches away lurks 1-3 inches of rough.
Good customer service with a friendly welcoming attitude.

Encouraged by gary00's positive review recently, I nabbed a TeeOff.com "Deal" time for today at 10:57. Checked in around 10:30 and the guy said I could go anytime. After I hit a few practice putts, he called me to the first tee with a twosome of nice guys. Pace felt slow, but overall we finished in about 4:20.

Shorecliffs is probably in the nicest condition I've ever seen it right now. Now, that's not saying it's fantastic (sort of like saying the fastest you've ever gone on a moped), but it's much improved compared to what I typically associate Shorecliffs with. There were no muddy spots, pretty decent grass coverage and excellent greens. Greens were smooth, soft and medium fast. Full shots stopped quickly. Downhill putts can get away from you if you're not careful. Overall great conditions on the putting surfaces. The fairways are a mix of lush kikuyu, thin kikuyu, sporadic bare spots and everything in between. There's definitely a premium on landing in the fairway because the rough is deep and lush in spots, and balls do not advance through it. Some of the rough was 3-5 inches deep. This being Shorecliffs, there are also some bare spots here and there, but overall, coverage in fairways and rough is quite good. I wasn't in a bunker, but they looked good except for on 13, where maintenance guys were actually taking sand out of the bunker (hopefully they were re-doing the whole thing). Tee boxes were the lowlight of the conditions; not terrible but pretty beat up and inconsistent from one hole to the next.

I hadn't played here for a while, so I was unaware that at some point I guess they are losing the current 5th and 6th holes due to some sort of lawsuit. As a result, there is currently a green growing right on the corner of the dogleg on the par-4 9th, which will neuter one of the most challenging holes out there and turn it into a short par 4. I assume the current 9th green will then serve as a short par 3. In even more disappointing news, the same thing is happening on the par-5 11th. There is a green growing about 150 yards short of the current green, and a tee box being prepared for the current green. Apparently this long, skinny par 5 will be converted to a par 4 and a par 3. Losing 11 is a bummer to me, because it's so demanding on keeping the ball straight.

All in all, though, Shorecliffs seems to be on the rise and feels more fair and playable than ever, while still being a very demanding course, at least from my POV (and scores).

7/11 using teeoff deal time $18 from the blues got off early but were behind 3 slow groups with a POP of 4-3/4 hrs--quite unusual for a Monday--and above average for this course as we have usually played in 3 1/2 to 415 POP.
Breezy 1-2 clubs into the wind--sunny and pleasant. Fairways are still in decent shape a few browning areas but overall good lies. Rough in play on about 75% of the fairways deep enough to stop or slow the ball but ok to play out of--and lots of rough around the greens for that extra challenge for those touch shots. Played out of 1 bunker a little wet and heavy--others looked in ok shape but not freshly groomed today.
Tee boxes have adequate cover but often the crown effect is evident.
Greens are the highlight smooth rolling true and quick getting more so as they dried out--crazy fast above any front pin placements especially 7, 12, and 15.
Good to be back playing after a no golf road trip to Glacier NP for the last 3 weeks.
Once again good customer service with a friendly welcoming attitude communicating "glad you came here to play'

6/17 from the blues 6244 71.1/130 using GolfSoCal $24 voucher with range balls on a warm sunny at times breezy 830 tee off. Course was busy with a group of 3-4 4somes a 5some and another 5some off ahead of us POP was tad over 41/2 but very jerky-- times with no waiting then a long back up like on 10 and 11 after a group stopped for food at the turn--then the pace picked up--all and all a great day to be out here. Fairways are well filled in with good lies all day. Rough is becoming a a factor and is present on most holes taking away distance and quite penal depending on the lie. Thick and juicy around most greens especially if long. Condition of fairways and rough are quite good having adequate water really helps the work that has been put into the course really shows. Tees mostly not level tending to be chewed up on the par 3s but able to find an ok placement. 2 bunkers we found around the greens looked better than they played having about an inch of sand over hard pack. Greens are smooth well maintained--medium fast with a little more grain--due to keeping them moist and slightly longer to protect them from the heat. Putted better today only one 3 putt and a bunch of 1 putts for par. The greens super Jose knows his stuff and is dedicated to improving and maintaining the course. Another example of good golfer oriented customer service. This is a tight muny type course that has had a rather negative image thru the years which I believe it no longer deserves. Come on out and give it a play.

Decided to take advantage of an Underpar groupon and play on a beautiful morning, and beat the heat. While never a big fan of this course, it is getting better, and if you accept the "quirky" layout and several "bad" holes going in, you can actually enjoy the round.

Conditions are improving, water does make a difference! The greens rolled well and were receptive to well struck shots. For the most part, fairways were in good shape. Rough was patchy in spots.

Staff is always friendly and accommodating. This is just a very "different" golf course, kind a strange in a way, but nice for a change now and then.

Rough thick in places and definitely a factor around the greens. Bunkers full and playable. Tee markers today on mostly level ground. Greens are softer and receptive rolling medium to medium fast getting plenty of water and looking good--still a few dufus duffers that just cant fix ball marks but fortunately we were close behind because most looked fresh from today and repaired nicely. Once again golfer oriented great customer service--we were sent off the back 9 and had 320 POP. Having more available water is really making a difference--good local course providing a fun outing for a very good price.

5/27 using teeoff $18 deal time on a pleasant somewhat breezy am 9am start to an unusual POP 5 hr round behind a 4some that got slower and slower and older and older as the round regressed--we were a 2some--never did get an invite to play thru--good thing the setting was nice--I have observed that Fridays here are really open or quite slow--guess it depends on the rub of the green.
Fairways were soft not much roll out played longer again today but had good lies overall--the new irrigation is having a positive effect and the rough is becoming more evident and is thick in places. The 1 bunker I was in was quite good with firm ample sand--45 feet to back flag 8 feet past BOOM a quality sandy.
Tees mostly had enough cover but are not level.
Greens are getting back to their usual high quality smooth rolling well at medium fast and being receptive to approaches and pitches.
Again good service from nice people.
