Played here on October 11th and play here every fall on my vacation. I really like this course. You'll see reviews talking about the small old clubhouse or the age of different items but the course is HARD! It is super tight but very interesting. It's historical claim is that it was Nixon"s favorite course in the area. Huh.
It is a step above a muni course but no it's not on the TPC rotation. Greens were excellent when I was there and all other areas were solid. Put away the driver on many holes and do what the course demands. it is a placement course with little to no forgiveness on slices or hooks. But it has great layout. Some very Star Wars like tunnels under freeways a local pizza parlor at a tee box that you can ring a door bell on the back fence to get food and drink from actually handed over the fence(awesome!) interesting houses throughout the course and really cool people everywhere. And did I mention it's HARD. There's a par 3 172(?) yds that is STRAIGHT up a hill a BIG hill. WTF do I do with that? Great elevated dogleg right hole forget the number. This course is one of those reasonably priced worthwhile places that winds up becoming a personal mission. I'll be back next year maybe multiple times.

Went out with a couple of friends to play 18 on 9/22/13. Teed off at 2pm. Course was in OK condition, but this is NOT a luxury golf course by any stretch. Between the shabby clubhouse, to driving through drainage ditches and under the freeway, this course leaves quite a bit to be desired. That said, the course is tight and challenging (BRING EXTRA BALLS!). We all had a good time, but agreed the course is a bit quirky. Will play again if i get get a discount (paid $30 which felt like a steal, but was probably about right), not not a destination course!

I decided to play the back nine here this morning as a little warm-up for my GK match play round later in the morning. Though I don't have the disdain that most people have for this course, it's usually one I'll choose to pass over. But it was the best option today at $24, which included cart and a breakfast item from the snack bar (excellent breakfast sandwich, by the way). Not a bad deal.

There were a handful of folks on that side, but I was able to enjoy my own pace as I took my time to get in ample practice. The course was in decent condition, but about average in my experiences here. The greens were definitely nice. A few look to have been aerated recently, but pretty much healed and everything was relatively smooth and true throughout the course. The tee boxes, fairways and rough were pretty patchy as always. Not pretty or consistent, but playable enough. Sand traps were very wet in the early morning, so I couldn't get a great read on the sand in them, but they seemed pretty good in the few I found.

Some tight and tricky holes here, but it's a fun and challenging layout that I don't mind. Still, I can understand why folks dislike it's funkiness and unique "ambiance" of driving through the drainage tunnels on the back nine. Service was good and overall solid experience this time out. As one of the less expensive and easy-to-get-on courses in OC, it got the job done for me today.

Hadn't played here for about three years, but after reading the recent reviews, thought I would give it another try. The course actually is in much better shape than when I last played, particularly the greens. You can see they are making any effort to improve this course. The downside is that this is a very very strange layout and there is only so much you can do.

I would not choose to make a steady diet on this course, but I must admit I had a nice time playing. The staff was perfect ! I wish all golf course personel were as friendly as they are here ! And for $26, for a round of golf with cart and breakfast - that's a deal. I suspect it will not take me three years to return.

Wow, Shorecliffs, what an improvement. It was my first time playing the course in roughly 2+ years and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. Paid $25 via online special for early twilight tee time on a Friday...and it's a good deal.

The thing this course has always had going for is its unique, challenging, and yes, sometimes quirky layout. It was just a matter of improving some things, and they are well on their way to doing that. Greens were always kind of bland as far as layout, but usually decent. The big change is now instead of ultra-slow, they are somewhat fast. It took me a few holes to adjust. Tee-boxes are downright awesome compared to the old days. They used to be abysmal. Fairways are ok, but playable. Rough is still a patchwork hodgepodge of crabgrasses and other stuff...that's maybe the biggest thing left to improve. Pace of play was satisfactory, around 4 1/2 hours.

Customer service was good. I was a single and the starter took the initiative and paired me with another single as a twosome, instead of pairing me with the threesome (a family) that preceded us and was at my scheduled tee time. The locals hanging out around the men's club and restaurant are definitely a bit "crusty", but they are friendly folks.

Keep up the improvements Shorecliffs!

Played shorecliffs today for 15 bucks. Course is very green right now. Fairways were in pretty good shape, looks like they're trying to cut the course tightly now with the rough a little longer, nicely kept around the greens and fringes. Some tee boxes were horrendous, definitely the worst part of the course. Greens were pretty good, a little bumpy, but medium-fast speed. Layout is still tough to deal with on a few holes, but for 15 dollars it was a great value.

Got a great deal online so I made the drive down to San Clemente. Had not played Shorecliffs in at least ten years. Played with one of the regulars and he told me the course in under new management.... Continue »

Got a great deal online so I made the drive down to San Clemente. Had not played Shorecliffs in at least ten years. Played with one of the regulars and he told me the course in under new management...and it shows. Tee boxes and greens are in excellent shape...smooth and fast. Fairways are a bit soggy from all the rain but there are no bare spots. Rough is, well, rough, but not so long that it's demoralizing.
Course is still as narrow as it was before. No water except for a bunch of drainage culverts marked as lateral hazards. Sand in traps is pretty coars and was very wet this morning.
All in all a good course at a great price.

If you haven't played here in awhile or have stayed away because of the reputation the course had in years past, you will definitely be surprised by the improvement made in recent months. Have played two rounds here in the past two weeks, and the transformation is jaw-dropping. Yes, the clubhouse is still the same for the most part (never liked the fare from the grill), however, the on-course improvements make Shorecliffs a viable alternative to other tracks in south OC and worth the $$. The course has made a number of improvements, like the complete makeover of the 16th fairway, with a new tee box and is completely playable through the green. While the course still features some narrow fairways, and will always be a challenge to those who fade shots, the improvements make it a true value for the dollar spent. The owner has resumed management of the course, and after years of neglect continues to pour money in to on-course maintenance that make playing it a worthwhile and fun experience. My only complaint is slow play, and they could use a marshall in the late morning and afternoon hours.
