Played today and it was 95 degrees. We saw the beverage cart between number 8 and 9. That was the last time. We had to play the next 8 holes with no drinking water! We called the pro shop at number 14 where they have restrooms and drinking fountains, however the drinking fountains do not work!!!!!! Finally on hole 17 we were able to get a drink of water. When finishing our round we saw a young man in front of the cart barn with a jug of water on the back of his cart and cups. When asked he said he was heading out now. Wow, do people have to die of dehydration on this course before they take water out?

Played 1:30 PM on Saturday, 4/2/11, on a very pleasant sunny afternoon with light breezes. It’s been several years since I played here, but OC courses are too $$ or in maintenance, so I drove out. Not much of a crowd, although Champions was recently aerated, but didn’t appear to cause congestion on Legends.

I generally like Schmidt-Curley designs, and this one has the added benefit of being in a very natural setting through oak woodlands, through and across arroyos, and being relatively secluded. Since my last visit some housing has been built around the margins of the course, and within the Legends loop there are some pads and cut slopes that will eventually be built on, although the builder has currently stepped away during the housing downturn, leaving ugly weeded pads and slopes in some areas. But much of the interior of the loop is untouched – there’s still a lot of wild and open space around the course.

There is a ball washer/club cleaner on the cart, which I prefer; but no cooler on the cart. No GPS on carts – a yardage book is provided (nice), but recent bunker removals are not updated (see below).

Things started off badly – the entry route has changed with the building of housing and there is a need for better signage, as it’s easy to miss turns and get lost. There was no starter, and the Asian 3some scheduled to tee off behind me raced to the first tee and got off ahead of me, then proceeded to ignore me as I stood waiting for them on every shot, even though I played two balls, re-hit putts, etc. They also drove their carts up close to some greens! No marshal on the course. Halfway house closed. Saw a cart girl twice.

I’ve seen that Morongo recently acquired the two courses from the previous owner; I think the PGA ownership is long gone. I noted that several holes had bunkers removed that had been there previously; esp. #4, where the two fronting bunkers on this very short par 3 are now gone. Also bunkers removed on #6, 15, 16, and 18. I don’t know if this is recent or happened some time ago – usually this is a means of reducing maintenance costs. I wonder if the architects are consulted when this happens? Do they have any recourse?

The course has a somewhat ragged look – fairways and greens looked ‘fuzzy’, although this may be a result of playing in the afternoon. The course looks like it needs some TLC to be a very good venue. Greens were medium slow, with some very firm (high up or exposed) and some softer in sheltered areas. Greens have a lot of movement to them, with dips, swales, mounds, and slopes. Generally good lies in the fairways and ball sat down in the rough. In some rough areas you can get into clumpy or bare areas, resulting in bad lies. Many greens had many small pebbles pitched out of bunkers onto the greens. Bunker surfaces were crusty from sprinklers, then drying out, but sand was generally ample.

A vacant housing pad has intruded into the hitting line on the downhill, long par 4 #5, making any attempt to cut the corner blind, and assuring that any homes eventually built on that pad area will be regularly pummeled with golf balls.

Recommended – I hope the new ownership treats these courses like they deserve, and the public responds. If this place weren’t so far out, I’d be here more often.

I really enjoy playing here. Challenging track with great scenery. Overall the course was in really good condition. I still have complaints about the tee boxes not being level and some of the sand traps had some good size rocks in it. Other than that fairways, rough and greens were in great shape. The new golf carts are really nice but do not carry GPS. I asked one of the attendants if the plan on adding GPS and his answer was unlikely since the subscription rate was "$7,000 per month". I'm looking forward to playing there again as soon as I can.

I played here on 12/11 with a few other GKer's. Course layout was pretty good but due to wind and quite a few uphill holes it definitely plays longer than stated on some holes. Bunkers either were hard as a rock or just a little bit of sand, tee boxes were just terrible and mainly consisted of sand. Fairways were really nice for the most part but there were quite a few wet/mushy areas. Rough was great about medium length but fairly easy to hit out of. I thought the greens were pretty good, hardly any ball marks and rolled nice but they were running a lot slower than the practice greens and I played the Champions course 3 or 4 weeks ago and those greens were a lot faster as well. I would never pay full price here but I will definitely go back with a discounted rate from cftt or golfnow. Also customer service is pretty bad but I never let it get me down.

Played East Valley Legends today and boy was I disappointed. The course which I used to consider one of my Favorites fell way short of expectations. The conditions reminded me of an average Muni course. Hard packed bunkers were the least of the problems. Many tee boxes were more sand than grass and many either angled uphill or downhill or had humps in them. Also on 18 there was a big hole right where they set the tee markers which forced you to one side or the other to avoid. I hope that things will get better. It seems Morongo has taken over management and don't know if conditions are a result of the previous management group or the current one but I hope its the former and the course will return to its previous glory.

Worth the drive from Pasadena (1 hr.) Course is in very good shape except for sand traps.

It had been about 6 years since I last played here. I found the condition of the course to be very nice, particularly the greens. For $29.00 w/cart, this is a real bargin. If I didn't live so far away I would play here more often. Staff was great! I like this course, but there tends to be a redundancy in the holes. Not that the holes are not fine holes, just a bit too similar at times. All in all, a really nice track, in great shape, wonderful staff and fantastic price.

Got out there on time to play--they were "backed up." "Its never like this", they claimed. Granted it was a holiday, but the pace of play was atrocious--45 minutes to play the first two holes. After that it sped up a bit, then slowed.
I was put off by the speed of the greens. Super slow----I hate slow greens. Whatever, hit them harder I guess. Course has a nice look to it, houses have invaded since I first played it. I feel bad for those folks--they probably spent $400K on those boxes, now worth $225K tops! Bunkers were a TOTAL EMBARRASSMENT. Many lacked any sand on the sides. They really should be ashamed on that fact....otherwise a nice, slow (in many ways) day. Cold beers, great service. Work on those green speeds and sand.
Paid $39 via golfnow, guess you cant beat it for a labor day round. Give them a try.
