Well Redhawk was a complete disappointment. I had been looking forward to playing out there for many years and finally had chance to get out today. I'll start from the beginning. The proshop is bare, hardly any merchandise, just a large empty room with nice people behind the counter. Starter was a nice guy and was more than helpful. Carts are nice but lacking, no GPS, ice chests but no ice. Driving range and practice facilities were decent, $5 for a small bucket. Range balls were nice but low flight balls. There are 3 chipping greens to practice on and one putting green, all of which are in good shape but not manicured very well. I purchased my tee time on teeoff.com, I had a discount code and booked for $38. I got linked with a single and a twosome. The group dynamic was less than optimal. Got off the tee on time but had to wait on the group in front of us for about the first 3 holes. Tee boxes and greens are in solid shape. Tee boxes look like they're being grown out a bit so they were a little hairy. The greens held most everything, soft and moist, no bald spots, but were pretty bumpy, like they hadn't been rolled at all. The fairways were absolutely terrible, I didn't find one good spot in short stuff and I hit 10/14 fairways. The poor condition of the fairways didn't help anyone reach the green in regulation. Most of the places I ended up were dead on top and muddy underneath or dead on top and bouncy underneath, no consistency. The green complexes on a hand full of holes are just ridiculous, a 4 tiered green on an uphill par 3; punishment for hitting a green reg. A 2 tiered green on a short par 4; top tier is about a 5.5' uphill. As someone who enjoys a classic design and generally tough but sensible greens, I was more or less thinking "this is dumb." I love the challenge but really...come on. I only found 1 bunker all day and it was mediocre, it was more like really fine dirt than actual sand. I played the gold tees at just over 7000 yards, with the fairways running out if you can it in the short grass you'll get another 30-50 yards of runout so it plays short but again your landing spots are far from optimal. Overall I was really unimpressed by Redhawk, I will only be playing at Journey the next time I decide to make the drive to Temecula.

Played Redhawk blues two weekdays this week, first time in 15 years. Course is showing its age, but they are spending money in the right places, fairways and greens, all in quite good shape. Very ragged around the edges, though, even the crumbling driveway and parking area set a ragged tone as you arrive. Range is all worn mats, plentiful targets, and oddly, three chipping greens but two are wildly undulating and not much use, one flat one at top of hill is easily missed but the best for practice. Nice practice putting green, mimics well the greens on course, which are not very tricky and roll slowly but fairly. Good tee choices, and an interesting layout and routing, challenging but not penal, little surprise trouble (though the first hole features a tricky first shot), but good water features and a locally famous island green par three that is quite fun and has very well maintained surrounds (unlike the rest of the course, where the attention is on the fairways and greens only). One oddity is starting and closing par 5’s on which you can’t hit driver. Fairly hilly, would be hard to walk this course but I did see several doing it. No GPS and not a lot of sprinkler heads, so bring your own measuring device. No beverage cart either day. One standout to me is the turf—even the fairways are po annua, so very tight-appearing lies but the turf is still quite receptive to well struck irons. The bunkers are undergoing work, so some are fine, others very thin. Greens are mostly protected by very deep grass surrounds and a lot of deep grass bunkers, chipping and pitching often quite challenging. Pretty busy both days, but decent pace at 4:15 each day in a threesome and twosome, in both instances they started me out alone and I caught up to others and joined. Very nice staff at check-in and starter podium, but they probably could do a better job of managing the tee sheet and starting times by putting more people together from the outset. With some extra spending on the edges, Redhawk could look as good as it plays, this is well worth a stop in the Temecula area and do t be put off by the ragged appearance.

Got back out to Redhawk for just the second time ever this past Friday and it was about what I was expecting based on prior reviews and comparable courses in the area for the same price.

It's strange that I can usually replay courses hole by hole in my head with no problem at all, but for some reason the winding nature of Redhawk rendered many holes a blur, as if playing them for the first time ever. And strangely, even after a second visit, I still feel that way all over again, with the exception of the memorable set of par 3s. Those are all unique and very cool.

The rest of the layout is fine, just for some reason for me not memorable. Maybe it's all that driving around between streets and homes that just makes it difficult to retain a sense of direction about the course. I'm not sure, and it's not a knock (or it shouldn't be), because many of the other holes are very fun and challenging. And another few, somewhat quirky and less fun. No shortage of blind, greenside bunkers around this place, either. Thought I hit a perfect approach to the back pin on 9 only to find myself in a greenside bunker that was invisible from 120 yards out.

In terms of conditions, not too bad. The fairways do have some lush areas but there are also some dried out and wafer thin patches, too. Luckily the majority of lies are mostly good, but there are plenty of places to lose balls off the fairways where you'll find plenty of creeks and leaf-ridden areas. But not too bad, and the rough is just fine. Tee boxes were mostly good (we played the blue tees) and the bunkers were not great - pretty thin layer of sand and difficult to play from all day.

The greens were a little better than okay, but there were definitely a few with some sun damage and plenty of bumps from players not fixing their ball marks. Some of the green complexes at Redhawk are insane, with multiple tiers that are a nightmare if you're on the wrong shelf. Some are comical and a bit much in the grand scheme. Hey, it's their course, not mine.

We had cart service numerous times on a hot Temecula day, and there were nice, cold water stations every few holes to quench the thirst. For a $45 twilight fee, it was well worth it though overall. Not sure the full weekend rack rate though would make me happy after finishing up on tricky 18. Your call.
