Conditions are continuing to improve. There are still bare or almost bare spots in places on the fairway, and they are still keeping the rough cut uber short. The tee boxes are all open and the new ones, while really awful right now, should start to take hold and fill in soon. The greens are still struggling. Lots of them are still showing the affects of punching and verticutting. They are rolling faster but not breaking true. HOWEVER compared to the course a month ago these are all improvements and all welcome. There begins to be a light at the end of the tunnel. I'd rate it about a 3.5 right now.

Played again on Sunday 6/10. Fairways are improving. Still not as lush as usual but definitely getting better, very few brown spots. Greens are healing but are still bumpy, patchy, and do not roll true. You know it's bad when you land an iron shot on the green and dirt flies up! (and it's been three weeks since they were sanded!) Two of the forward tee boxes are still blocked and they've moved those tees up 30-50 feet into what was fairway and isn't even close to level. Very frustrating. One middle tee has been moved- but they just moved it to the forward tee box. Still, seeing improvement, slow but sure. Fingers crossed the greens will return to previous condition by July or mid-July.

Played again today. Took a harder look at it and compared it to four days ago. So the fairways are starting to green up. They are still quite thin compared to the usual lushness. Greens....are still struggling. Looks like several kinds of grass trying to take root. Course is recommending a two and done rule for putting. Several forward tee boxes have temporary sites so those who play forwards can't record scores- and that's ticking some people off. HOWEVER the course owners have hired a specialist/course consultant to come in and tell them what they need to do NOW and what they need to do all year in order to get it back to, and keep it, in great condition. That is a positive step and makes me excited for what the future may hold!

Course has been open for about three weeks. Very disappointed. This course has been getting better and better over the past few years but it's obvious no one showed it much love this winter. I highly recommend you do not drive to play this course yet. Sometime later in the summer it should be better. Why? Fairways are barely decent, lots of brown. Greens are terrible. They punched them a week or so ago- too little, too late. They look as ugly as they play! They are putting some work into various tee boxes so there are temp tees around- those are welcome as the tee boxes should be great once the new sod roots. Saw the cart girl- in the distance. Didn't see her up close until halfway up the ninth. This course, while a 9 hole, has always been relatively challenging. But they've decided for some reason to cut almost all of the fairways much wider eliminating the challenge of what used to be pretty thick rough. They've added some chintsy looking marker 'sticks' in the middle of the fairways too. All in all what used to be a pretty classy course now looks like a Billy Casper course. I'm not giving up on it, this is my home course, but it really needs to recover from this winter AND new owners. Oh, did I forget to mention they've raised prices too? So, beautiful course, great bones, wait a bit before you come to play it!

Played opening day 5-18-18. The course suffered from the lack of snow this winter. Fairways are coming back pretty good but still need some time. Bunkers were in decent shape as well as the tee boxes. The greens were mostly a joke unfortunately. They had been punched and sanded not long ago and though they held shots better than usual they were extremely slow and bumpy. At one point a 3 foot putt bounced into the air about 6 inches. I hope in a couple weeks things will get better.

Made the trip up to Big Bear Saturday to check out Bear Mountain. I really did not know what to expect with this course, especially with it being a 9 hole course. They obviously have some pretty different weather up there compared to down here in the valley so I figured keeping a golf course up in those conditions would be difficult.

I was pleasantly surprised with the course conditions. The fairways well really really good. The were very few bare spots and some areas were almost like carpet. The rough was a bit "rough" with a lot of gopher holes and bare spots but we are supposed to keep it in the fairway so we can't complain too much. The greens were awesome and rocket fast. It took a couple holes to get used to them but they rolled great.

A few things about this course. First, it is extremely narrow. There are houses/condos and run through the middle of the course. Just to give you an idea, there is a sign on #8 that says, "You are 135yds from the middle of the green and 150yds from a $200 broken window." Awesome thought right before you hit your tee shot :). The greens and the next tee box are also extremely close together. You really have to pay attention at this place or you will be sitting in the clubhouse with an ice pack. Second, if you want to hit balls before your round, you have to drive (in your car not the golf cart) to the driving range. Just something to keep in mind. Finally, the ball does fly roughly 10% longer. You have to take this into account on shots into greens or you will be apologizing to the group on the next tee all day long.

Go check this place out if you are in the area. The surroundings alone are worth it. If you hit it relatively straight, you will have an awesome time. If you are spraying it around, well................

A week-long trip in the mountains made for five nice rounds.

The gopher problem at Bear Mountain continues to plague the course conditions again this season.

Without the gopher damage, the fairways and rough would be excellent. Due to the extensive damage, both struggle to be considered in the "fair" category.

Tees are bad, little grass coverage and out of level. Sand quality fair.

Greens are the bright spot, much improved from years past. Smooth, good coverage and fast.

Accepting that the gophers own the place and we are their guests, our second round of the week we committed to winter rules and bumped the lies off the gopher scars and had a much better time.

I haven't reviewed in a couple weeks as things change around here. The greens were punched a week ago but not sanded. It effected play a little but not like sanding would. By this past weekend they were mostly healed. The course is in about as good of shape as it gets. The afternoon rains have softened the greens so they are receptive and the fairways are lush and nice to hit off of. No hard pan here. Bunkers have been very nice this year. Biggest complaint are the tee boxes. Many if not most are torn up bad. #4 back tee is more sand than grass. I don't know if its the number of beginner golfers or that some of the short par 4's the big hitters play irons but its frustrating to have to search for a spot to tee it up where you are not standing in a divot and have a decent spot to place your ball. All in all this is a good time to come up and check it out and get out of the heat!
