Played this little nine hole Sept 6- and played it frequently this summer. Have to say management has really been putting some effort into this little gem in the past few years. The fairways are lush and very playable, the greens are rolling smooth, fast, and breaking true. (always away from the mountains!) The rough is interesting and can be punishing. Each hole is different and has it's own challenge. You don't want to walk this course if you aren't in good shape as it has some serious elevation change. The course in general is narrow and the 'rough' includes several very overgrown streams and lots of gopher holes (the course has been waging a war on them for years and if you ask a groundskeeper you'll get the latest 'total'!) You will be penalized if you aren't straight! It's actually a nice course in the mountains and worth playing. The clubhouse has good beer and sandwiches and overlooks the course for a good lunch afterwards.

Have played a couple times in the past few weeks and the course just keeps impressing me. The fairways are lush, the rough is tough and the greens can drive you crazy with the speed and undulations. It seems that the new ownership is putting money and care into the course. I have heard they will be punching greens again next week and plan to close before the end of October. This will not allow a lot of time for them to heal before they close so I hope to get in a couple more rounds before the season ends.

Played here on 8/22, sorry for the late review. It was a bachelor party and there were 6 of us, two threesomes. Early morning tee off about 8am.

First thought was, wow this looks like a decent course up here. Fairways were green, rough was solid and greens were kept up. Tee boxes could use some leveling, other than that not much to complain about.

Course is fairly narrow playing in between cabins, except for hole 4 with the elevated tee and wide open fairway, just don't go left as you will end up in the driving range. Some uneven lies outside the fairways, but that's why its called rough, right? Green were in good shape, pretty quick. Sand hard packed. Played 18 was done in about 4hrs.

Never played here and would only really see it in the winter when its covered or becoming uncovered from snow. Price may have been a bit steep for it but hey when you wanna play in the mountains you don't have a lot of choices. I think we paid $60 for 18 and cart. Exceptional views, relaxed feel, and just a good time.

Played here this afternoon with GK's resident mountain man, SBogey, and his buddy. Not too busy out on the course, so we enjoyed a nice lunch beforehand and then teed off a little before 1:00. We had to wait on a slow group in front of us for much of the first nine, but it wasn't too bad. Then we looped around for another nine and basically had the course to ourselves in the late afternoon. They have a deal for 9 holes, cart and lunch w/drink (beer or soda) for $38, and then I paid $16 more for the replay nine with cart. I was pleasantly surprised with the conditions. Things were quite lush and green throughout. Some tee boxes can use some leveling out, but the grass coverage was fine. The fairways were very nice. The primary rough areas generally had great thick grass coverage, but the ground underneath has a lot of gopher holes and lumps, so you usually won't have an easy lie or stance. I wasn't in a bunker, and they look to be worth avoiding here if possible. The greens were firm and quicker than I would have expected, rolling fairly smooth. All in all, a fun little course up on the mountain. Most holes are pretty straightforward in terms of layout, but it was more challenging than it looked. Part of that was because of some heavy winds this afternoon (which are common) and then the downhill/uphill nature of the whole course. There are no huge changes in elevation, but it's built along a natural grade and that factors in on all shots. The greens here are diabolical with that slope. They are hard to hold and putts are very tricky to read. It was fun playing with Steve, who told me all about the different alterations over the years, so I could sense how much the place has evolved (some good, some bad). Nice mountain scenery, relaxed vibe and cool location across the parking lot from the ski resort.

I have played several time recently and the course is in as good shape as it is likely to get. The greens are running fast and smooth finally and the fairways are filling in nicely. There are still some tee boxes that need work and the sand is hard packed but if you are in the Mtns and looking to play a little golf, now would be a good time to check it out.

The course conditions are really coming along quickly this season.

The course conditions are really coming along quickly this season.

Fairways are super lush with only some minimally damaged areas (gophers, and lots of 'em).

Greens are quicker and smoother than anytime last season and will hopefully just get better throughout the summer.

Be sure to check out the range, the practice green, chipping green, etc., are all exceptional.

Pricey when comparing to courses "off the hill" but well worth it if you are in town.

Open for the summer season with new ownership. Mammoth Mountain bought Bear Mountain Resorts over the winter. No apparent changes as yet, but some newer faces around.

Open for the summer season with new ownership. Mammoth Mountain bought Bear Mountain Resorts over the winter. No apparent changes as yet, but some newer faces around.

The greens are sketchy (early season) and overall the course is in pretty fair shape, but still a long ways off what it was mid-summer last season. Hopefully soon.
Still worthwhile though if you happen to be in town.

The Bear Mountain experience gets better and better each year! The greens are better now than anytime in memory.

The only maintenance issues holding this course out of what one would consider a "resort caliber" course is the on-going gopher issues and sand trap maintenance. Neither is a huge issue, but with both these addressed this course would rival the conditions of any Palm Springs resort course, or Sierra Star at Mammoth.
