Met up with my old Vegas golf buddy on his way through the area for a very pleasant round at SL at 10am on Thursday, 2/20/20. Booked thru the SL website for $58 but was charged only $48 at the shop – maybe a senior discount(?). I like the layout of this course and it’s pleasing to the eye – it’s a ‘development’ course in that it’s routed through the surrounding housing, but homes are well off the line of play, and the location on a broad sloping bench gave the architect plenty of room to create elevation changes and design features that keep the holes interesting. Weather was sunny and warm with only light breezes – perfect golfing weather. We joined a twosome of parents in town from the Midwest to watch their children play in an annual high-level club basketball tourney.

Recent reviews talked about very firm greens – greens today were pretty firm but held high shots and played consistently. Green speeds were also consistent through the round, running at medium+ speed. Unfortunately, we saw quite a few new and old unrepaired ballmarks on all greens, seemingly increasing on the back nine. Greens looked great and had full coverage. Fairways are dormant and turf is patchy, dry and thin. Lies are tight and in many places you are basically sitting on dirt. Rough is cut low and very playable, but can also be dry and patchy. Sand was adequate but damp and heavy. Tees were fine.

Check-in was quick and efficient. Starter was on top of things but no ranger or cart girl. Grounds crew frequently drove into our group or was mowing intrusively as we were hitting. All the barking dogs in Southern California are apparently housed in the homes adjacent to the course. We chugged along within a half-hole of being caught up, pressed throughout the round by the threesome behind us, in ~4.5 hr. Was disappointed they didn't allow us to take our carts to the car after finishing.

Recommended.

Played Fri Feb 14th at 7am, my first round in 4 weeks because of an ankle injury. Good to be back. Check in was quick, but for some reason they didn't have carts ready, had to wait. Course was in winter mode for the tee boxes fairways and rough, a few thin lies and some big bounces in the fairways. Greens were very hard, big bounces and next to no ball marks to repair. They rolled fast and a few of these had some very quick down hill putts. Was in 2 green side bunkers and the sand was just ok. I like the layout of this coures, wish we played it more.

So after my 1 month off for injury, I was back at it on 1/26/20. Played Sierra Lakes with my father and best friend with a 9:50 am tee time. Pace of Play (POP) Was 5 hr. It seemed faster than that tho... Continue »

So after my 1 month off for injury, I was back at it on 1/26/20. Played Sierra Lakes with my father and best friend with a 9:50 am tee time. Pace of Play (POP) Was 5 hr. It seemed faster than that though because we werent waiting more than 5-10 min per hole. However the back 9 had a stretch of 3 holes where it was real slow. Clubhouse staff and starter were friendly and welcoming as always. Saw the cart girl 3 times.

Greens- 8/10- would be a 10/10 if people fixed their ball marks
fairways- 7/10- some dead areas and some has patchy grass which led to some bad lies
rough- 9/10- green, thick and penalizing'
sand-10/10- Fluffy powder. This is how sand should be!
Tee boxes- 6/10 - half were good but Hole #17 was chewed up bad along with other par 3's. They need to move them to let the areas repair.
Water- 10/10- didnt smell and looked good.

This is a great course. We paid $65 rack rate which is a god price. This course is a 60-75 dollar course. Usually its $85 for morning weekend which is a bit overpriced in my opinion. If you can play it for $60 its worth it but nothing more.

Tee boxes were ok with some divot damage. The fairways are dormant bermuda and winter thin which made for some very tight lies.
The rough was almost non existent and only about 1 inch long. Greens were in decent shape with. a few too many ball marks. They were running medium speed and if you were above the hole you had better put it in or it will just keep on going.
Pace of play was right at 4 hours and we were never pushed and only waited on the foursome ahead of us a couple of times.
Checkin was quick and I was on the tee in about 10 minutes after putting for awhile.
Weekday senior rate is $48 which is a little high but not too bad.

Played here 11/30/19 with a 12:30 pm tee time as a single. Was paired with a 2 some and another single. Course was 15 behind when i got there so I wasnt able to tee off until around 1:00pm. I was able to get in 15 holes plus played one in the dark. When we went to the clubhouse the younger guy working was very very kind and comped us half our rack rate with a GC. Staff was very friendly and I always feel welcomed here! Top Notch service!

Saw the cart girl twice and starter was also very friendy

Greens- 9/10- rolled true and were great! Just wish people would fix their ball marks! Cmon people!!!
Fairways- 7/10- Good coverage with a few areas either dry and bare or over watered
Sand- N/A- Was never in a trap so I cant comment on this one
Tee Boxes- 6/10- Some were great while others were quite choppy and not level.
Rough- 8/10- Long and green and good coverage but definitely penalty worthy.
Water-10/10- clean and clear and did not smell

Played Sunday morning 11/3/19. The course right now is in great condition. The fairways are green with minimal bare spots. The greens are excellent as you would expect for the price they charge to play. The bunkers look good. I didn't have a chance to try them, which is a good thing. The big problem with this course on the weekend is the slow play. Management here has no clue how to keep the players moving. After 4 hours and 13 holes, I quit. You really feel ripped off when you pay full price and this happens. All it would have taken is 1 marshal on the course to push slow players back on pace. And if you are a golfer who is just learning or just really bad, pick up the ball after 10 shots or stick to the range for awhile. You can't slow anyone down there. Sierra Lakes, you owe me 5 holes! Frustrating Day in Fontana. I'm still recommending this course, but not on the weekend.

Played here 9/21/19 with a 1:30 pm tee time and with 2 friends. We got paired with a single to create a foursome. P.O.P was good at 4.5 hours. Staff in pro-shop was friendly and saw the cart girl 3 times. It was a hot day at a scorching 93 degrees when we tee'd off.

Greens- 8/10- There was a previous tournament earlier in the day and NO ONE fixed their ball marks. My friends and I each probably fixed 3 ball marks per green. This is totally unacceptable. Marshal needs to let tournament players know to fix their ball marks and divots on the course. This tournament really tore up nice greens and fairways....

Fairways- 6/10- some fairways were perfect and green while others were cut extremely short and dead - i think they are preparing for overseeding but not sure.

Tee Boxes- 8/10- most were level and flat didnt see anything too crazy or any extreme damage

Rough- 2/10- BRUTAL! So long it was unplayable 90% of the time. Really punished players for being off the fairway.

Sand Traps- I was only in 1 trap on 18 and sand was good and fluffed 9/10.

Water was clean on the course and didnt smell and there were water stations filled throughout which was very nice to have on a hot day.

Played in a 8am shotgun tournament on Saturday, 9/21. There were actually two shotgun tournaments that started at the same time. The course moved surprisingly quick. Within a few holes, the group in front of us were usually putting out by the time we got to the tee, and the group behind us could not be seen. I think the nice pace of the course may have had a lot to do with the generous layout. Playing from the white tees, the course was mostly a progression of 360 yard par 4s with fairly wide fairways. The rough did tend to fairly lush and would tend to grab and catch your clubface. There were quite a bit of brown spots on some of the fairways, spots I would have expected to be marked as ground under repair. The greens were fairly soft and putted nicely at a medium-fast speed.

My playing partner and I did have some bad luck with golf carts. Our first cart would stall on startup, and we would have to throw it into reverse and then back to forward for it to move. At the turn, we exchanged it for another cart. This second cart, when we would slow down, would suddenly slam on the brakes by itself, jerking us to an abrupt stop.

I didn't get a chance to interact with the pro shop, but the marshall on course was very nice and very helpful when we told him about our problems with our first cart. The young lady in the beverage cart was also very nice and showed up a few times on a day that got into the mid-80s. We really couldn't ask for better weather in Fontana, and we finished the round in what felt like a quick 4 hr 20 min, done before any afternoon winds would kick up.

It is a couple days late but I made the drive up to Sierra Lakes on Thursday, 8/8. Been a while since I have made my way out there. It wont be that long next time!

It is a couple days late but I made the drive up to Sierra Lakes on Thursday, 8/8. Been a while since I have made my way out there. It wont be that long next time!

The layout at Sierra Lakes is excellent. It is actually one of my favorites in the IE. The course does wind through a housing tract but most of the fairways are quite generous and the surrounding houses don't really come into play unless you hit a really errant shot.

As the previous reviewer mentioned, it does look like the course is dealing with some issues between the edge of the fairways and the rough. There were quite a few bare spots in these transition areas - really on all holes or just about every hole. Not sure what has happened. That being said, it is obvious that the course is doing what they can to get these areas back to the usual Sierra Lakes standards so Kudos to them.

Besides these few areas, the course was in great shape. The greens were great. They were fairly firm and fast but they did hold shots well.

I was in two green side bunkers and both had about an 1" of great sand in them but were a little firm under that initial layer. They were very playable - not complaints. I am sure the bunkers are not easy to maintain here with all of the wind the course gets.

Besides the bare spots that I mentioned above, the fairways and tee boxes were in great shape. My group agreed that we could "bump" our ball in these areas and and it worked out just fine for everyone. Don't let this small negative discourage you from giving Sierra Lakes a go.
