Admiral Baker must have been in the Union Navy. Like the Civil War, the North is far superior to the South at this facility. The replay rate with cart was just $20 (only $10 to walk), so that was a nice surprise. The South was actually a bit more busy than the North, but I played along with a couple other singles and we still finished in about 3 hours, 45 minutes. We all benefitted from the fact that most San Diegans were home watching the Chargers playoff game. By all accounts, today was an unusually uncrowded Sunday. The South was definitely not in as good a shape as its big brother. It seemed like every lie I had in the fairway and rough was different. Different patches of all types of grass. Many thin areas and some lush ones, too. Not horrible, but you really had to pay attention to the lie and grass on each shot. Tee boxes mostly good and bunkers solid, as well. Greens here are different type of grass than on the North. Very soft and receptive, but also smooth on putts rolling at medium speeds. The soft turf did lead to some ball mark damage, but nothing terrible. I did notice some burnt-out spots on a couple of greens, but the holes were kept away from those areas. The South is an OK course, but nothing too interesting or challenging. I liked North way better, which was to be expected. The back nine is better than the front (and the 3rd is a nice par-3, as well). It's fun to be aggressive here with a number of short par-4s and not a ton of trouble to get into. Mounding around the greens is a nice design touch. I'll post some pictures for the South soon. The few that are on the page now are actually of the North course. The staff here was great and very reasonable prices on food/snacks/drinks, too.
