Played Sunday, 6/14/15, with GKer 1RudeDog in the Troon Challenge scramble at 1PM. The Dog's back is sore today from carrying me and my inconsistent game! We finished below the fold but enjoyed the course conditions and our playing partners. Service was top-level. Grass on the range as a shuttle takes you from the clubhouse and back. Very nice facilities, cart with cooler and club cleaner, small and slopy putting green, very good GPS on carts.

This course is out of my $$ comfort zone but fees for the scramble are at least somewhat reasonable, so we went to play a course that I hadn't played in 20 years, and The Dog had never played. Conditions were very good thruout, with large fairly firm greens that rolled well at medium-fast speed, great lies in the lush fairways, and plenty of water and hazards to avoid. The one greenside bunker I was in had good sand depth and coverage. Tees had plenty of room and were in good shape, but several struck me as sloping.

This course plays longer than the yardage due to many (severely) uphill holes and the need to carry your ball in the air to reach target areas and greens. Difficult par 3s with lots of water. Good conditions but be ready to spend some money.

I have not played here in over 10 years so it was like playing for the first time all over again. The layout is very intimidating and even with the gps we had a hard time figuring out exactly where to aim so of our tee shots. The course is not overly long but you can find yourself in some wicked lies.

Greens were a little disappointing. I wasn't expecting the ounces greens to have that much of an effect but they did. It was also a little disappointing that 2 of the 3 holes were our first and last holes. The speed on the other greens were just ok. I don't remember being shocked by the speed. There were some greens that had quite a bit of slope and I only read them correctly by watching the approaches land on the green or other putts. Also there were quite a bit of collars around the green that had been punched and sanded, again another let down.

Fairways were fantastic. Not a super amount of divot damage but a few holes that I noticed. I really liked the feel of the turf too. Wasn't super firm but not real soft that when you hit a piece of sod goes flying out. Fairways can have some slope. For example on the first par 5 all 3 of us found the fairway. One was pretty flat, I had an upslope shot and one had a side hill lie and we were probably 15-20 yds from each other.

Rough can be tricky. Not sure what type of grass it is but made for some interesting shots. Again the collars around the green made it difficult to know whether to carry the ball or let it hit there and kinda die. Also you can get some awful stances. On the first hole I was right and the ball was just about at my waistline and sitting down. On the first par 5 I hit a 2nd shot which found the grass above the bunkers on the left and I think I should have sat on my behind to hit the ball because it was so far below my feet.

I was only in one bunker, a fairway bunker and it was pretty hard and crusty. The sand around the greens looked better.

Staff was great. One of the marshals was giving out lollipops which I had never seen before. Range is a little always from the clubhouse and has grass (but wasn't open) and the artificial turf.

Enjoyable and loved the layout. I won't be waiting another 10 years to come back.

Played 4/24 @ 9:30. $150 underpar deal. POP 4.5 hours. This course is phenomenal. I've been fortunate enough to play here at least once a year going on about 10 straight years. I highly recommend looking for Underpar deals or other deals as the rack rate is pretty steep.

Unfortunately, my Dad and I could only play yesterday together and of course the weather was rainy. It was still a great day regardless. The course drains pretty well and there weren't too many puddle spots.

No need to review the teeboxes, fairways or greens etc. as they are all amazing, as always. The service is also out of this world.

Played 4/17/15 7 am $ 150. UnPr POP 3.5 hrs Fairway's were fantastic. 1/2"-3/4" soft emerald green carpet with plenty of roll. Only the slightest hint of tan noticed in an occasional spot. T's Good. Fairway traps firm and green side ones softer but consistent. Rough- The mowed fairway's are not very wide. The rough looks benign, but your ball will almost always settle down into it. Making it difficult to get out of with any certainty of spin or distance. So, finding the fairway grass was essential. Greens- They are in the process of aeration. They have been aerating three greens a week on Monday's for three weeks now. One with 1/2" holes and 2 with small tines. They have been mixing them up over the whole course. So only a couple of the holes had any real effect on putts. Most were in excellent shape being the end of the week. Very receptive and rolled great. They were running a perfect speed ( For me) at medium fast (10-11?) Most of the greens have some pretty big breaks somewhere on them and the greens are BIG. So pin placements can be dastardly or benign. Over all course was in excellent condition and a treat to play. IMO. It's hard to for me to justify paying over $200 for any course. Maybe I'm just cheap that way. Right now I don't think this course is a great deal at that rate. We paid $300/2 and I have no problem with that. This is by far the best course in San Diego (IMO) Yes even better then Torrey. No Ocean view but the layout, conditions & beauty surpasses Torrey easily.

Tee boxes were a little thin with some having some small bare spots but overall in good shape.Fairways were very lush with real good lies. Rough was long and thick and in great shape. Bunkers were on the firm side which was great for fairways bunkers but not so good for greenside. Greens were in real nice shape, very firm and fast.Probably would not pay full rack rate to play here. Service was top notch.

Aviara has a great design and is in wonderful shape for the upcoming Kia. It makes you think off the tee with tight and turning fairways. I recommend leaving the driver in the bag on most of the fro... Continue »

Aviara has a great design and is in wonderful shape for the upcoming Kia. It makes you think off the tee with tight and turning fairways. I recommend leaving the driver in the bag on most of the front nine holes but then break it out on the back 9. Watch for occasional green fee specials or twilight deals. Aviara provides a golfing experience you will not forget.

I recently had the pleasure of playing Aviara twice in 3 days thanks to some friends in town. I believe the rate we paid was around $180 for hotel guest mid-day.

This was my first time experiencing Aviara and I really enjoyed it. The service is top notch and the course condition is on another level compared to the other public golf options in the region. I was most impressed by the greens, rolling very fast and true.

The layout is pretty spectacular, and very fun. Each hole is very different. There are lots of opportunities for longer hitters to take advantage of the layout, which was also fun. The course is pretty challenging and I was surprised it was pretty windy both days. Highly recommended, just play in the afternoon and save some $$.

played on turkey day with a 7am tee time. The place is immaculate. Don't know how they do it but the course was just so green.

Staff was very helpful and friendly. They had mini-muffins and coffee out to start your round. We were briefed by the starter and off we go. Despite taking some time to look for lost balls, we finished in 3 1/2 hours playing as a 3some. Rough can be punishing and you might be forced to just put the ball in play on certain locations.

Greens were great. There were 3 greens that were mini punched but did not affect play at all. Bunkers were fully stocked. Fairways - hardly see any imperfections.

Carts had GPS with distances to the pin. Flyover video with tips on how to play certain holes.

They have a driving range and practice area but didn't get a chance to use them.

What a great day to play here and I would rank this as one of the best Southern CA has to offer.

Played here yesterday. (11/10/14) Course was still transitioning. The fairways were very good. There is still a lot off new growth still happening.... The roughs are getting close, but are still not there yet. Some sections are way to long and others not fully grown in. I've played here a lot and would rate it a 7 as ompared to its normal 9 that i would give it.
