Played in a charity event here today and found the course in the typically good condition I am accustomed to at this course. Fairways, rough, greens all in good to very nice condition. Talking to an old friend that works there he said it’s finally come around after all the overcast not helping growing conditions. Long, challenging course even from the white tees, but a good mix of holes. Recommend.

Played last weekend and wondering what happened to the golf course. This used to be a premier golf course but now, greens were patched up here and there. Bunkers with less than ideal amount of sand. The driving range mats are all worn out. Practice greens still pretty good. And staff were very nice. Starter was awesome. And the carts were very nice and comfy. There was hardly anyone on when we played so we finished in under 4 hours. Course is still playable and we enjoyed our round but given the stature of course, it is below expectations. I get that they are pouring a lot of resources in redeveloping the Champions course for the NCAA event next year but wished they put some attention to Legends as well.

Rest of course is fine, except bunkers are rock hard. Doesn't matter, greens make it a complete waste of time.

I'll stay away for a long time. Definitely do not go in May, it is going to take weeks to recover.

I thought I was getting a deal, $90 for a 2:40 twilight start. Man was I wrong. They got me good.

Played Sunday in about 4.5 hours. Course is in good shape but not great. Tee boxes were mostly level and good coverage. Fairways were ok. They were firm with lots of roll. Pretty easy to hit from but you definitely felt the firmness of the ground. The rough was not existent. The bigger issue was the clumps of grass in the rough. It was thin but of course the ball would stop next to a large clump of grown rough making it kind of annoying. Sand was a mixed bag. All the bunkers were nicely groomed, but some were very thin and hard pan, and some had more sand in them. Greens were good, firm and most of the time the ball rolled well most of the time. Don’t think I would pay the rack rate to play. I heard they are planning major renovations but not sure when that may happen. They also need new mats in the range, they are looking very tired and need to be replaced.

Played 11-9-21 mid morning with Nick and Marvin finishing in about 4 1/2 hours with some waiting on most holes. Blue tee boxes were in decent shape with a few having some bare spots and some divot damage on par threes. Fairways for the most part were in good shape with nice lies and minimal rollout, there were some minor thin spots here and there, but nothing to bad. Rough was a mixed bag of different grasses all cut to about the same height and being a little bit longer around the greens. Was in two greenside bunkers both of which had a thin layer of sand. Greens were rolling medium/fast and very soft, leaving some bumpy putts from poorly repaired ball marks. Overall course was in decent shape with great customer service all around.

A year to date was my last visit to Omni La Costa but on the Champions Course with GK Gurus, this time a great time as well with GK Gurus on the Legends Course. Teed it up with gary00 and for the first time Mark_6m and Zachary. Great Day.

I seem to find all the trouble on the Legends Course and shoot much higher than on the Champions Course despite the Champions Course being more difficult for most. Too bad they are not renovating the Legends Course too – LOL. For those of you that have not heard the news, Gil Hanse will be doing a major renovation to the Champions Course starting this coming Summer in preparation for Omni La Costa being chosen to host the NCAA Division 1 Mens Golf Championship 2024 – 2026.

Regarding the Legends Course, it’s in great shape … especially the fairways. 3 years ago the Legends Course started transitioning the fairways to paspalum turf and I’m happy to say they are now fully established. Lush and providing great lies all day.

Greens were very good shape. Rolling medium-fast, mostly smooth and holding shots. I noticed some the trees that surrounded the greens were significantly trimmed no doubt to allow more sunshine on the greens. Rough is a mix of many types of grasses but predominately kikuyu and although not very high it’s a challenge to play from. Bunkers were in OK shape but certainly the weak link in need of more quality sand. Regarding the tee boxes, I played the combo tees (white/blue), they were in good shape on the Par 4’s and Par 5’s but had some divot damage at times on the Par 3’s.

Service all day was outstanding from the clubhouse, starter and on-course beverage service.

Layout is parkland style, mostly flat, lots of mature trees, OB and water hazards, tricky greens and moderately open off the tee. It’s not a layout that will “wow” but it’s a layout that is relaxing and demands great play to score well. Check out the PHOTOS I just posted.

I have a feeling once Champions Course renovation is completed there will be plans to renovate the Legends Course. Personally I’d like to see the names go back to North and South after renovations.

This is a major resort golf course in beautiful Carlsbad California I believe is priced in line with the overall experience provided to its core cliental.

Recommended.

Had the pleasure of playing at LC Legends with The Amazing Johnny, Awesome Phil, and Gary the Great. What a Treat of a Tuesday with solid golfers and excellent playing partners!

As for the course, LC Legends is a mature parkland style course that features large mature trees, strategic bunkering throughout, along with occasional water hazards. The course is primarily flat with some limited undulations on the front nine. The course also features a slender wash that comes into play on at least 6 holes. The course is surrounded by various condos and / or single-family dwellings, which appeared to be for quality living. The course is certainly walkable, but there is often a long way to commute from green to tee box, notably on the front nine.

LC Legends places premium on accuracy off the tee and into greens. The course primarily defends itself with well positioned bunkers, medium length rough, medium-fast sloped greens, and funneling wind conditions. There were a few doglegs, but no blind shots that I could recall. For the most part, the course was always fair and played in a “what you see, is what you get” manner. The course played its yardage, fairways offered little roll out on drives and approaches. The course was very well maintained and in above average condition. The course layout is rated a 4.25 out of 5, conditions are rated a 4.33 out of 5. I note the following:

Tee Boxes: Level and green, no damage. Conditions above average.
Fairways: Generally green, lush, and defined from rough. Grabby with limited rollout. Condition above average.
Greens: Green, medium-fast in speed, and on the firmer side. Speed about a 10 – 10.5. Condition above average.
Sand: maintained, but not always consistent from bunker to bunker, as some bunker sand was soft and other was gritty and hard packed. Condition average.
Rough: maintained and defined, about 3 – 4 inches. Condition above average.
Waste Areas: - Waste areas were noted on a handful of holes and were maintained with overgrown nature that offered little to no recovery potential. Condition above average.
Driving Range: The range was very nice, hitting off an artificial turf surface. Range is flat, fully grassed, with various markers from 100 - 250 yards. Range balls were quality Callaway golf balls. I also noted a very nice chipping area and practice bunker.
Practice Putting Green: Not too large, but in excellent condition. Speed was consistent with course.
POP: 4.25 hours – no wait was encountered on any hole.
Other: Beverage cart visited our group four times during our round, always with a smile. Bars, restaurant, and the golf shop, all were all top tier. As were resort amenities and its landscaping.

Really enjoyed this course and I strongly endorse playing LC Legends. If in the area and looking for a fair test of golf that comes with a great surrounding environment, top tier customer service, and delicious food after the round, I believe this is a great place to visit. I will again be playing at LC when given the opportunity.

11/9 guru outing playing with Johnny, Mark and Phil very entertaining and enjoyable. I played members, Johnny combo and the slammers blues. Fairways were lush while being closely cut and moist but not soggy, but on the soft side so not much roll. More unfilled divots than I expected some of which were quite large. Good lies for irons and hybrids a little tight for metals and tight also for chips and pitches especially with the softer soil a very crisp ball first was a must. Rough was generally lush but could be clumpy with different varieties of grass. Members tees were level with some a bit thin but playable. The 4 bunkers I found had ample sand as my lie was on the up slope. Greens were soft and receptive and vulnerable to pitch marks. Overall rolled well at medium fast speeds. Greens were more tricky than they looked as the breaks were subtle and grain could be a factor. Also most had a slight up slope fronting the complex so shots that hit short stayed short. Layout looks very straight forward but trouble seemed too easy to find and did not provide much opportunity for heroic recoveries only more severe punishment. Plentiful friendly and helpful staff. Thanks to La Costa for having us and Johnny for setting up the outing.

Played the GK Guru’s event at La Costa’s Legend course with Nick and Ron. We teed off at 9:30 on a beautiful but cool and breezy Tuesday morning. I played the whites while Nick and Ron played blues. The tee boxes mostly level and fine to play from, the fairways were pretty generous and mostly fine to play from but didn’t seem to get a lot of roll. Case in point, I was in a fairway bunker so I wedged out of it back to the fairway only to see the ball land and spin back a foot or so. Greens were a little fast and rolled true. A few of the bunkers I was in were hard packed and some were soft but overall good to play from. Service was great from every aspect from the the check in to the bar afterwards. My knee was hurting after a while but it was fun to play in Johnny’s outing and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks to Johnny, Ron and Nick for a great day and if you’re in the area there are 2 amazing courses to play at La Costa..
