Played 9/1 Course is in better shape then I expected. It's been very warm & dry out here and the course is showing it, but still decent shape. There are some very dry/burnt rough areas. and some very dry fairway areas, but over all not too bad. Greens are in decent shape and were rolling pretty quick. If you can get a discount deal and take it for what is... you will enjoy yourself.

Played in a tourney Sat. 7/14/12. Course was in fair shape. Lot of dry areas. Greens were ok. Some were in poor shape. Bumpy !!! Its a bit of a ride from the 15 fwy to the course. This course is a must play though. It is a beautiful course. Mountain course with a lot of target shots. If your hitting it sideways. Bring lots of balls. I would play it again in better conditions.

I will preface this by saying that the last reviewer seemed to like the course and the single I was paired also liked it. Course is in worsening shape, it's far too tricked out, and the traps are just hard pan. I couldn't make it thru 18, because I didn't like the layout, conditions, nor pace of play. Cheap rates bring out poor golfers, on a target golf course...i should've known better. Ymmv

Played on 6/21. Overall the course was in excellent shape. New players club program is quite a bargain and well worth the investment if you plan to play here more than 6 times in a 12 month period. Course requires placing your tee shot on almost holes so you need to play all your long clubs. Scenery is hard to beat. My favorite course for the price in all of San Diego county. Only downside was the condition of the traps both fairway and green-side. Minimal sand making it almost impossible to hit a normal sand shot. Definitely require a load of fluffy sand in almost all traps. Plan to play this course many times in the near future. Pace of play was excellent with our threesome finishing in 4-1/4 hrs with only minimal wait on a couple of holes. Greens are a challenge to read both break and speed wise.

Tee boxes were OK, fairways were thin and sometimes bare, greens were not consistent and the traps were poor at best. I have played this course a few times before na dit was always in much better shape than I saw on the 2nd. It is a challenging and fun course when it is taken care of.

Played 6/2 at the GK event. Prior reviews to this one nailed the details on the condition of the course. I gave it a rating of fair-good. I thought the greens were in good condition. They were very soft and rolled true. They were tricky to read. They were slow when you were below the hole, but fast when you were above it. The tees were fair at best. Many weren't very level and some had some severe divot damage. It's understandable since the course isn't long. Everyone plays the blue tees. The white tee boxes looked untouched.

Put a camera in your bag. It's a very scenic golf course with unique layout. It's tough for a course that plays less than 6000 yards. It has elevation changes, tight fairways, forced carries to landing areas and several blind shots. This course is all about hitting a good tee shot. It challenges you by making you hit many different clubs.

I liked the ride between holes 2 & 3. It's like taking a 30 second ride in a golf cart on an old school wooden roller coaster. Hey, can someone go out there and hammer in all those nails I saw sticking up.

Service was good in the pro shop and the club house. No outside service. No beverage cart. Which is understandable. It probably would be to dangerous. There are water stations. No practice range, just hitting nets. It has a chipping and a putting practice area. Also. I wouldn't look for too many lost balls. There's snakes and poison oak abound.

Mt. Woodson is like it sounds. It is a mountain course with holes up and down the hillsides of a mountain, but level enough to play. Not too severely angled. This makes for a challenging and tricky at times layout. There's are lot's of trees and bushes you would find in the woods. The scenery is beautiful if you like being in the woods. The drive is winding up the mountain, so it is a nice drive as well.

I gave this course average marks because the fairways, greens, rough, sand and tee boxes were not in bad shape, but could use some work. They were playable. It is June so things are heating up and therefore the course was showing some wear.

Layout: It is a challenging layout which I like. I find I enjoy my round more when there are different types of holes such as over water, doglegs, and different elevations. So if you like interesting courses, then you will like Mt. Woodson.

I will definitely play hear again.

played 6-2 in the gk outing. short tight course where course knowledge really helps. a lot of lay up shots off of tees to position yourself for approach shot. tee boxes where ok a little thin on some but you could find a level stance. fairways where thin and a little on the dry side. rough was not that long and easy to hit out of. found a couple of bunkers and they where not in good shape thin crusty sand and hard underneath. greens where soft and a little slow with inconsistent speeds.

We were the 3rd group of the seven total groups on the day.

My wife & I had never seen the layout, luckily our playing partners Shaun & Mark had played here a few times. This is a course you need to learn it by playing it a few times. The day before, I went to the website to see how to play each hole, wrote down the tips BUT forgot to bring some kind of golf game :( As a group we had fun playing with a NEW GK member. I also read about the curving Wooden Bridge/path from hole #1 down to the second tee box....

GREENS: When we reached the greens, was surprised to see multiple un-repaired ball marks. I KNOW we were the 3rd group out in the event but these marks were a few hours old. I struggled to hit greens all day so I know it wasn't my marks because I was chipping/pitching from the apron most of the day. SPEED? very inconsistent, the front nine majority of the putts were slow...IN FACT, I had several downhill putts that literally STOPPED like velcro was attached to the golf ball as it reached a downhill mound. Back nine the speed changed in spots of being faster when you weren't expecting it to be. There was some bouncing going on including a playing partners putt VEERED offline & hopped past the 18th hole! Just need to be more consistent on BOTH 9's...just saying.

Fairways: For this time of the year, were still a little green with some bare spots along the edges & in the rough. Playable but not great. I tried to fill some of the divots couldn't get to them all.

Bunkers: Seemed to be average quality but most of the bunkers had HIGH lips to carry IF you found yourself in them.

* SHOT of the DAY * Mark Armstrong (NEW Member) Hole #9 from the right side bunker to a low left hole location below the TWO tiered slope....DRAINS it for a Birdie! My wife, follows up Marks shot, knocks it in from just off the green, out of the rough for Birdie! Me? two putt bogey. :(

Tee Boxes: Er, they all need some TLC but given it's not such a long course, most players will be playing from the blue tee boxes. Enough were not level even for me & I'm not that picky when I find my spot in the box.

Layout: Lots of trickery or shots to entice you to go for it on the short par 4's. NOW the par 3's? These are all tough holes so pay attention.
Tough stretch of holes on the back are #12, #13 & 14. Get through these and you'll be rewarded. Very impressed with the scenery and each hole gives you something different.

Practice areas: The putting green was two kinds of surfaces, the lighter shade of grass was more how the course would appear but pace was nothing like you'll see on the course.(See above).

There is no room for a real driving range, just Nets to get loose :(

The drive to get here is very scenic...At first I thought we made a wrong turn somewhere and for sure would be late.

For me, next time we'll take the longer way (which is only about 5 minutes). Exit #24 Rancho Bernardo Road to Espola Road then turn onto Poway Road onto route 67 to get to Mt. Woodson.

Reason? I have Vertigo,doesn't matter who is driving,it has happened when I'm driving. When we arrived,I wasn't quite myself,I almost was ready to take my prescribed medication but held out because of some of the side effects.

We'll definitely would come back here, most likely on a weekday since it's a long drive for us but not as long as some other GK'ers who came to play!
