Played Steele Canyon today 10/5. they are over seeding and punching the greens on the Ranch 9 so it was closed and probably will be closed for a little bit. we played Canyon/Meadow. they just finished over seeding and punching the greens on Meadow and wow the fairways and greens were immaculate. Its cart path only on the Meadow 9 but it was still very enjoyable. The Canyon 9 was just as good but i don't think they have done the over seeding or anything like that yet. i highly suggest going out there to play right now especially if you don't mind having to keep your cart on the path for 9 holes. the staff is always amazing there. played in under 4 hours. great time.

Braved the heat and played out here this afternoon. Surprised at how busy it was with the 100+ degree temps, but they had a small tourney going off on Canyon when I got there and that made it seem busier than it was. As the day went on, it thinned out significantly. I got a "hot deal" on GN at 12:06 for $61, which was a nice discount from their usual $100+ weekend fees (more on that later).

I was paired with a threesome and we teed off a little earlier than our time on the Meadow nine. There wasn't anybody in front of us, so we set our own pace on that side. When we got to the Canyon nine, there was a fivesome(!) teeing off on #1, so we had to wait a little at the turn. Fortunately, they moved pretty quick so we didn't press them too much on that nine. I ended up playing by myself afterward on the Ranch nine, where I caught and played through that fivesome on the third tee, only to run into a sixsome(!!!!!!) on the green. I skipped the next hole to get around them, but came back around and played it later. All in all, it took me about 6 hours to play all 27 holes here, though it didn't really seem that bad.

The course is very dried out right now. Definitely not it best showing condition-wise. The fairways and rough are about equal brown and green, but still very nice to hit from. Fairway lies nice and fluffy and consistent. Rough wasn't cut super duper deep, but the ball really sinks down in it and makes it very tough to hit (and tough to find sometimes). The tee boxes were fine and the one sand trap I was in was excellent. The greens were excellent. VERY fast and a little firm, but receptive enough on good shots.

I enjoyed the layout overall, with the Canyon and Ranch nines being much more compelling (and scenic) than Meadow. Canyon is especially fun with all the changes in elevation. I didn't love it as much as some other similar style courses in SoCal and I'm amazed they charge so much to play here. I would never pay over $100 and the $61 I paid was at the top end of what I would be OK paying here.

For a "high-end" price tag at normal rack rates, I thought they were lacking in high-end service. I was shocked they make you pay for range balls with that expensive a round. There should be ice chests on the carts given how hot it can get out here. They just got brand new carts here, but surprisingly no GPS, which would be extremely helpful on some of the tricky holes. I was also surprised they didn't have a 9-hole replay rate for people who just want to play all three nines. They charged me $30 for another full 18 (which isn't bad if you can play all 18) as a twilight "replay" rate, but I would rather have paid a little less for just the additional nine holes like you'll find at pretty much every other 27-hole facility.

With the right deal and conditions, Steele Canyon is worth the trek out to Jamul, but it's just not worth it at the full weekend rack rates if you ask me.

Played in a tournament yesterday morning and haven't played here in years. For $45 we got to play in the tournament here, a little breakfast, lunch and balls at the range. For me I thought that was a steal. Course is really in good shape. We started in the morning when the greens were a little soft but these greens really dry out and are pretty slick. Fairways were pretty great and the rough can be a little thick in spots but it is middle of summer and there are some bare spots out there. None in the fairways that I recall but more in the rough. Since we were playing a scramble we weren't in a bunker but I had to get a couple of balls out to there and they seemed decent maybe a little hard but didn't seem too hard. There are some water coolers out there but it was so hot I was sucking them down before I could get to the next one so its just something to consider. I'm not sure if I was just very hungry or the food was that good but the food they served at lunch was great.

Played today. This the cream of the crop for this area of town. Terrific service with friendly staff. Course in really good condition. A little dry, but they are doing a good job for this time of the year. A couple bare spots, but they are few and far between. Fun layout with lots of elevation changes. Have to take wind into account. Greens were good speed (much faster than most of the other places around) and rolled true. Was only in 1 bunker, but seemed fine. Very enjoyable day and worth the greens fee.

Played here today (6/29) on the Ranch and Canyon. Greens were aerated recently but the Ranch is the better of the two but slower than normal, not very bumpy. Canyon was bumpy but should be in good shape within two weeks. Fairway were excellent except for three on the Canyon. Some sand spots on these fairways but not that bad.

It was very green, but that is about were the good anything stops. Fairways still spotty on canyons, ranch was closed, and Meadows was the same way. Biggest pet peeve of mine is paying 60 bucks a person and having HORRIBLE greens. I played back in april and the greens were rock hard and fast it was awesome. I had the same hopes but was ready to go back to the truck after the second hole. My dad was with me so I stayed. We played the tips I hit every green on the front and had 21 putts. Every putt I hit bounced somewhere normally bad. It was a long day. I would not recommend going out there for awhile.

Played on President's Day. Fairways were overseeded and you really notice it, as most courses in SoCal have not. They've come in really well, and I have to say it is nice to be in the fairway and not be hitting off a thin lie for a change. Bermuda rough is pretty thick and definitely adds to the challenge as your ball hangs up on those side-hill lies, where it used to run down. Greens aren't lightning quick, but fast enough so you'd better stay below the hole. This is the best shape this course has been in since it opened and was a pleasure to play. Staff is first rate and a $10 pitcher of Sam Adams at 19 is a beautiful bonuse. Thanks for the fun.

Played the Canyon/Ranch rotation a week ago and found the course in decent conditions. Some of the greens had lots of ball marks and in my opinion, were unfair. They were firm and fast and some had extreme slopes. I suppose it was my bad for being above the hole though. The tee boxes and fairways were good. The course was filled with juniors practicing for a tournament and it was really annoying watching these kids play 2-4 balls at a time. No joke....it was ridiculous. Luckily, the staff allowed us to switch to Canyon instead of Meadow, where most of the kids were going. That helped move things along immensely. This course consistently is well maintained and is fun to play. We got a good deal through ez links and paid $40....a steal for the caliber of this course.
