played 4/12 with my dad for his 70th birthday and had a blast! they just aerated a couple weeks ago so greens were still bumpy and sandy, couple more weeks and they will be great. Staff was great, friendly cart girls and used a free round coupon i got for christmas from Costco, so used that and paid 79$ for my dad for a 9am teetime. Overall course is in pretty good shape, except for the greens which need a couple more weeks to be nice. They still putted fast, but just a little bumpy and didn't hold the lines. Tee boxes were nice, level and lush. Fairways were in nice shape, not much rough. In a few more weeks i bet the whole place will be awesome. POP was a little slow, the twosome we were paired with were hitting a lot of balls OB so just took a little longer than normal, but they were nice guys and didn't mind spending the extra time talking with my Dad. Took well over 4 1/2 hours to play and we didn't stop at the turn or anything, so just a tad longer than I like, plus I wanted to finish up to go watch the Masters. Overall, great experience at a beautiful facility, had a great lunch in the restaurant as well with wonderful service, waitress just placed a pitcher of Arnold Palmers on our table, which was nice.

We found a great deal in the afternoon round so we tried to play a quick 18. It was little chilly so not too many people were out which was great for us. We got there at 1:45PM and there wasn't any bag drop attendent so we proceeded directly to the proshop. We played the Canyon and Ranch. Course had lot of elevation changes thus adding to the challenge. Due to Winter condition, rough was brown and little shaggy. My main issue was the tee box, it was rather long and there were lot of divots. Fairways were in better than average shape and greens were firm but rolled well at about 10 on stimp. It was ideal condition for me. Layout and elevation change is the forte of this course and I would play this course as long as I can find discounted tee time. If they can improve the conditioning of the rough and tee box, it would be a must not miss course. Hope they can fix up the conditions soon. Service wise, they are attentive but it worked ok for us since we needed to get in and out quickly.

Even with that said I still enjoy this course. The layout is interesting and the service has always been excellent.

Played on 9/22 with my usual group. Have to say that this course had lots of disappointing features to it that are easily fixed. Overall the course is in OK shape but its only a few changes away from being great. I love the layout and the fact that there are 3 9-hole courses to choose from (Meadow is currently down for aeration). Here is a detailed review.

Facilities: The clubhouse seemed well stocked with everything anyone may need to play. The bathrooms were clean and there was plenty of water through the course (ice cold and tasty). The cart girl was out but the grill closed early and that really is a shame. The parking lot is ample and the staff was friendly.

Tee-boxes: Chewed up for the most part. Some were soft others were hard but one thing they all had was inconsistency. Level ground was hard to find. My biggest complaint was that they had markers that were not printed on the scorecard and vice versa (ex. teed up on a par 3 with measurements at 110, 120 and 140 on the scorecard and the marker next to the blue tees was 133, made little sense). The tee markers themselves were also inconsistent, some were rocks yet others were pyramids. Little gripe but nice to show up and have them all match.

Rough: Didn't seem extremely punishing. Hittable rough if you didn't try and get too fancy with your shots. No rough was too long to hit out of.

Fairways: Burnt in some spots but a given considering how nasty the heat has been in SD these last few weeks. Still saw plenty of green everywhere and hitting off the grass was good.

Bunkers: Terrible. Inconsistent, but mostly terrible. Nothing was raked and I mean the course didn't rake them. Some fairway bunkers might as well be concrete. Consistency of sand varied from Coronado beach sand to hard brown dirt from the playground. Worst part of the course by far.

Greens: Surprisingly good. They rolled very true at a medium pace. There were a few marks here and there but overall I was impressed at how they rolled. Shots held only fairly well.

Overall: Good but this course really is great under the right conditions. Wasn't too packed and the weather was perfect so that helped but you'd have to get a great rate to make playing here worth it.

GK Cup match vs Rudyclub at Steele Canyon, Canyon/Ranch. Tough course, I now see why at 6228 (from the whites) it carries a slope rating of 134! It certainly didn't feel like 6228, it plays a LOT longer. The course is in summer condition, dry, hard and thin. Club house is very nice. Service seemed excellent, everyone was friendly and helpful. A mid sized putting green, a small putting green, two chip and pitch areas with a sand trap and a decent driving range from grass today. Tee boxes a little hairy in spots and a bit thin in others, but hey you're teeing it up so you should always have a perfect lie! Fairways, decent, mostly hard and fast, some big divots but most had been sanded. Rough, just a bit of a bother. 1 to 3 inches in most spots. Sand traps, I was only in one and it was raked but had thin coverage. Others I saw looked about the same. Greens, were the combo I don't like, they didn't accept shots well (hard bounces) and ran slow . . . I prefer the opposite . . . but were mostly smooth. Heck when greens are that hard no one is making any marks on them! POP, 4.5. It was a tough test for mid handicappers. Although I grew up out there that was the first time I played there! . . . and with no GPS, no pictures on the score card it was like playing by braille! What is it the 1990's again? For the deal we got (GN $39) it was worth it. In the condition it's in now I wouldn't pay much more than that (but I'm a cheap-O). I will probably go back when it cools down and they get some water on it.

Myself and my buddies have played here numerous times. I can't rave about the customer service. Colin is one of the best GM's in the county, and he's hired great staff. Everyone is very accomodating. The greens are always amazing, and the course is very challenging. I only wish I could play here more often. The superintendent, has done an amazing job with the course. The greens were always firm, and it was difficult to check the ball. Not anymore, now the greens run an average of 10, and hold. Do yourself a favor, play this course. Don't let the yardage fool you ego maniacs, The whites are all that you can handle the first time out. Par 71 fools everyone into thinking it's short. The blue tees are a great test for the scratch golfer, and with 3 9's it's tuff to get bored.

Have not played here since the late 90's and was a little tenative but scored a $50 golfnow tee time. Golf Shop/Starter personnel were rather unimpressive. I have seen a lot of Proshops and this was as bad as it gets for a $100+ green fee. Finished 18 and looked to get out for 9 more (willing to pay 30-40 more $, whatever the price was I was willing... but the uninspired/uncreative starter claimed all booked). We pack our clubs and BSed a little to see a single go out where we tried to?? They need to teach these boys about revenue?? For the course it was just about as good as it can get. Only thing is the size of some of the tee boxes and locations makes it difficult to maintain to high standards. Greens were good, fairways were tight and green with no bad lies or wet areas at all. Fun track this time of year. Mid Summer probably too hot?

We played Canyon/Ranch at Steele Canyon yesterday. It was cold and rained a little.

While I rated Steele Canyon pretty high, it was due primarily to the greens and fairways. The greens were the typical hard and fast. And the fairways were over-seeded, green and lush.

The rough was tough. It is brown kikuyu, which is a bad enough grass, when it's green, like at Torrey. Missed fairways were costly.

My main gripe is the condition of the fringes around the greens. They vary from hard pan to random clumps of grass. And worse, a combination of both. They should maintain them as either hard pan or rough.

Steele Canyon is a challenging course for me, primarily due to the hard greens that don't hold. And with the poor maintenance surrounding the greens, it is even tougher.
