I rated the course highly because it is very well taken care of and the Canyon/ Ranch combo is very fun off the tee and visually challenging. I have been able to find very good deals online so I rated the value high. But if you play you don't need driver off the tee on quite a few holes. Just make sure you line up properly because Gary player tries to trick you often.

2nd round of the day(6-18). Played the meadows 9 canyon 9. Not a big fan of the meadows 9 hole layout, but they do have 2-3 good holes. The canyon 9 was so much better. Seems like the course is resodding the tee boxes on numerous of holes. The course played probably around 500 yards shorter than the scorecard stated. Condition of the course is pretty good with nice and smooth greens. The view on par 3 6th hole on the canyon course was breathtaking. Didnt play the ranch 9, but the one hole i saw seems like it was similar to the canyon 9. If you have a choice, pick the canyon/ranch combo

The course is doing its fall maintenance right now. Because they have 3 separate 9-hole layouts, they temporarily close one of the 9-hole layouts while they do the maintenance. Right now, the Ranch is closed and the Canyons has just "re-opened." The greens on the Canyon 9 were still showing the effects of the fall maintenance. The greens on the Meadow 9 were much better.

The sand traps throughout the course were hard, with very little sand.

The tee boxes continue to be a problem. They've needed to completely re-level some of the tee boxes for years. And the issue isn't getting any better.

The good news is that the layout is still among the top 5 public courses in San Diego County. And once the fall maintenance is completed, the course should look fairly good throughout the winter months.

got there this morning 630.am wantd to play ranch canyon and was told they had a tournament on ranch so i played canyon meadow. i really think the rate should be less if you are playing meadow. tee boxes a little messed up and unlevel with alot of divots, fairways a little yellow for this course greens very nice a little slow however this is ok. finished in 2.5 hrs, so i cant complain still a nice course..........

I played Steele Canyon today 6/25/10. I was disappointed that nobody told us that Meadow was punched two weeks ago. I paid online to play Canyon, Ranch but when I got there I was told Ranch was closed because they were punching it today. Canyon was in good shape and I think that is the best 9 on this course. The greens weren't as fast as I remember them being but they were true and the course was in good condition. When we turned to Meadow the course was still in good shape and the greens weren't horrible. They rolled ok but were terribly slow as they were sandy and punched two weeks ago. The real disappointment for me came with the staff. I had the feeling they didn't care about anything or anyone. It was a horrible experience and one that I did not expect from this course. From the pro shop to the returant and the starter, nobody seemed to care about customer service or the experience. It was very disappointing.

This was an exceptional course (Meadows/Ranch), although they were heavily watering the front nine when we teed off at 7:37AM. As a result, the first 4 holes played very wet, and made these holes a little more difficult and longer. The Par 5s were a challenge, especially since you don't fully realize the layout of the holes (e.g. split fairways, where to leave your second shot for your approach). My Skycaddie was a big help, but I should have invested in a yardage book too. I really enjoyed playing here, and I have to say they make the best breakfast burritos (even better with a Bloody Mary)!

Played 5/14 Canyon/Meadow, teed off (at) 0930 finished just under 4 hours (at) 1325 even with playing behind Ladie's Club tournament so pace it very good at this course. Canyon course is TOUGH through a stretch of several holes, specifically 4-7 (maybe including 8 depending on wind) but carefully club selection is the key to success and making sure you don't leave any approach shot short! Meadow is the easiest of the three nines, with par 5 6th being the hardest due to approach shot over barranca to shallow green. Many tee boxes on Meadow are severly crowned and care should be taken when teeing up to ensure you are too down/uphill. Other than golfers not taking care of their divots anywhere and the tee boxes, there really isn't anything to detract from an excellent course. Check the online tee time websites for deals on greens fees and you can't find a better place to play.
