Played 5/24 as a single and was able to get on within 30 minutes. Starter got us off late b/c he was trying to speed up some hackers on the backside that was causing delays on the 10th tee but by the time we got there no delays were evident. They top dressed 4 of the tee boxes and I thought the greens were a tad on the slow side. Played in about 4 hours which is fast for this course. Paid the city rate so this is a good price for the course, however I'm not sure I can say the same about the non-resident rate. Its a great course if the price is right.

Played Wed 4/25. South was closed. Get there at 5:50am. Apparently, there is some kind of system for walkons. I was completely confused. They have one procedure for weekends, one for weekdays. Anyways, i have to put my bag on the rail to mark my spot. Then the starter opens the window at 6, and there is some rush for the window. Can't tell if the bag order even matters. So I'm waiting in line, sure that i'm being jipped.. and i hear "single for north?" from the starter. So someone just raises their hand... and they are on. So the next group checks in... "single for north?" heck, I just raise my hand... I'm on deck. NICE. Seems like they should have a sign in sheet. Apparently, most of the 20 or so people there were 3 and4 somes. And apparently, according to my 3some i got joined with, they don't give out teetimes before 7am, and the Lodge gets some of the times, and the call in system gets the rest. My guys said one of them put their bag on the wall at 3am and slept in the car.

So, the course. Has to be one of the best backdrops for a golf course ever. Ocean view from all of the holes. The holes on the coast are the prettiest. At first glance, the course seems very ordinary. Typical wideopen muni, that if put in the middle of LA, would be nothing special. But as I played the holes, they were much more interesting than I thought. Nice elevation changes. Greens are tough tough tough. Large and very grainy. Tried to find a consistent direction of the grain... and it seemed like it changed directions green to green. Study your playing partners putts carefully, and putt accordingly, paying special mind to the grain. From anywhere on the green, not just on your line. It will help.

As for the price.. as an out of towner, i was charged $80. Then another $10 for a pull cart!!! That's a little outrageous if you ask me. I thought he made a mistake and charged me for an electric. No, that wouldve been $40!!!! And no single rider charge. Talk about taking advantage of the ocean view!

Conditions: greens were nice and smooth. Fairways were a little thin. They said they overseeded and it was cart path only, but didn't seem like it. Rough was very penalizing. If you weren't sitting up, you were hacking. And greenside... couldn't get any chips close. The fairways were consistently cut very narrow...about 30 yds wide tee to green, all 14 holes... at least it seemed like it.

Oh, and one more thing... #18 green was aerated this morning!!! Completely sanded... unplayable!! WEAK. The pro shop says nothing before the round. They said afterwards i asked that they were using #18 plus the south for some upcoming tournament, so they had to do it. Kind of a lame finish to a nice round.

Overall, a very nice course, that uses the ocean to it's advantage to pull a nice profit. It's definitely gorgeous, but Aviara is in much better condition. (i know... $250 green fee.. but torrey south charges $160, and north $100, and $40 cart, so it's not THAT different) I find it surprising the tour plays a tourney here, as it seems very pedestrian. Not a lot of bite, except for the greens. I had a great time.. played in 4 hours. I would probably rarely play here as a resident, cuz it seems impossible to get a time... kinda like rancho park. But if i could, I would jump at the chance every time... if i didn't have to pay the nonresident rate.

Got on North Course as a single (Thanks to the one who didn't show up) This course is more playable for the average player than the south. Greens were good and putted real good. Course seemed somewhat dry and fast even though they had some rain earlier in the week. The most enjoyable round I had while in San Diego. Would return to play again. Easy to see why the place is always packed.

Played four days after the Tournament and course was in as good condition as it gets. Greens rolled true and fairways in excellent shape. Time to play it NOW.

The North Course is in better-than-usual shape. It appears that all the bunkers have new sand. The tee boxes were nice. The greens were about what they usually are. If you pay the resident rate (we paid $24), it is a great deal.

Certainly worth the green fee if you're a city resident; I'd think twice as an out-of-towner.

The blue tees are not on the North and I would say the majority of the white tees were moved up (probably between the red mark and white marker). As a non-resident I don't think the green fee would be worth it right now but as a resident its bearable. Some of the rough and fairways are roped off so some of the rough is pretty think (in fact there were a few of us who lost our balls in there a couple of times) but there are other parts which are kind of thin and playable.

Played about 9 am on Sunday; course was in wonderful condition, from tee to green. Not sure about the bunkers, only because I finally managed a whole round without getting into one! Pace of play was good, about 4 hrs and 20 minutes. A lot of people walk the course, and it is very walkable, and a good way to enjoy the views of the ocean. Highly recommeded, especially if you are a city resident.
